His eighteen years of service have always been characterized by idealism and sincerity. Y llElllEAllIlN f Q 1 THE PURPosE of the 1936 Viking Staff has been to produce a book which would combine an accurate and complete portrayal of school activities, with an original and interesting manner of presenta- tion. Wliile the Work of gathering and checking materials has necessarily received our greatest attention, We have been particularly interested in the task of planning a striking makeup for the book. The result has been a shift from the con- ventional style of yearbook to a bolder, more modern design. A vivid color combination, sim- plicity of lines, and unusual arrangements charac- terize the 1936 Viking. We hope this change will be welcomed on the campus. The college annual is an important feature of the unollicial program. Religious organizations, literary societies, departmental clubs, contests in sports, debate, oratory, music, and particularly the college annual give training to those who engage in such activities which is comparable in value to the training received from the formal activities of the official program of the college. Some one has said that education is what you retain after you have forgotten everything you learned in the classroom. Certain it is that a student who devotes no time to extra-curricular activities fails to take advantage of a remarkably line opportunity to develop qualities and form friendships which would be of inestimable value and satisfaction to him after his school days are past. I am glad to have this opportunity of giving hearty approval of the Viking as one of the most valuable extra-curricular activities we have in this institution. On the pages of this annual are recorded activities which will be recalled with pleasure thirty or forty or even fifty years hence. And when the children and grandchildren of those whose photographs appear here, see this book, they will marvel at the style of dress away back in the Iirst half of the 2IIth century. l congratulate the Viking staff on their fine contribution to the unothcial program of this college for the year 193536. Mr. Spalding STUDENT VOLUNTEER CONVENTION Ttns YEAR marked the time for the twelfth quadrennial Student Volunteer Convention which was held in Indianapolis, Indiana, from December 28, 1935, through Ianuary l, 1936. Of the six delegates who went to this convention from North Dakota, four were from Valley City State Teachers College. This group included Miss May E. Boydston, Y. W. C. A. advisor, and Alton Bjork. Katherine Mielke and Milbert Kaseman, representing the L. S. A., Y. W. C. A., and Y. M. C. A. respectively. This meeting offered more than 3,000 students from leading universities and colleges an opportunity to contact world leaders in the fields of both religion and economics, and to meet people from every continent on earth. Men such as Reinhold Niebuhr, Toyohiko Kagawa, VVilliam Temple, Iohn R. Mott, and Robert E. Speer, with their depth of character and warmth of personality, led students of every race to share deep experiences and absorb creative ideas. The Indianapolis experience was made possible for these students by the organizations which they represent, by the generosity of the Student Council and several local churches, and by the splendid cooperation and inspiration of many faculty members. COACH IIM MORRISON called his diminutive band of gridders together on September 9 for the beginning practice of the 1935 season with little hope of seeing much valuable material on hand. A squad of thirty-eight candidates turned out for the first session, but the majority of them were very light and inexperienced, some being without even high school experience. As a Whole, the squad averaged about 155 pounds, an extremely low average for a college squad. Returning lettermen included Kinzer and Larvick in the line at guard and tackle respectively and in the backfield Dick Moordale, Itzy Kempf, Don Ayers, Bert Olson, and Al Wicks. The return of Harry Schoonover, all-conference guard from the 1933 squad, and of Bill Morsch from the squad of the same year also added to the list of experienced footballers. With three Weeks' Workout in their favor the Vikings traveled north to Bottineau for the opening game without a great deal of optimism concerning the outcome. The Foresters presented a big rugged squad which towered over the Vikings and outweighed them by a good margin. The superior blocking of the team and the magnificent ball- carrying of Itzy Kempf, however, proved superior to the Foresters' weight and the Vikings went home with a 21-0 victory. , FOOTBALL FOOTBALL T935 Q72 Q1-gyfjjg if ,JW I-IOMECOMING GAME I E l-. ,... .Mann 5 . VALLEY CITY VIKINGS vs. DICKINSON SAVAGES THE HoMEcoM1No GAME on October 5 was made perfect by the great victory over the Dickinson Savages. This was one of the hardest-played games ever witnessed on a local field, and the Vikings again showed the superiority of speed and aggressiveness over the immense bulk of the Savages. Kempf was again the outstanding ball carrier on the field by breaking loose for a sixty-yard return of a Dickinson punt. The work of Bill Potthast at fullback was also outstanding. In one of the most exciting games of the season the Vikings spoiled the Homecoming celebration of the Wahpeton Wildcats with a I2-6 win. Throughout the first half and much of the second the Wildcats led by a margin of one touchdown, scoring early in the game from their effective passing. The Vikings, however, put on a great drive in the second half after Potthast had broken through to score and marched the length of the field to take the game. The blocking of Ayers, the line-plunging Potthast, the great work of Morsch at center and Kinzer at guard were features of the game. On October 25 a fast charging, alert and hard-hitting squad of Mayville Comets outdid the Vikings with a great passing attack and went home with a 13-6 victory. The Viking score came in the closing minutes of the game when Kempf scored from the one- yard line on a recovery of a Mayville fumble by Wicks. Playing under unfavorable conditions the next week at Minot Teachers the Vikings again failed to click and fell victim to Minotis very effective end runs which netted them most of their yardage. In this game a Viking touchdown was called back for the third time in the season, when Kempf broke loose for a beautiful sixty-yard run, only to be called back on a clipping penalty. Running true to the custom of the last few years, the Vikings again turned in the best performance of the year in the last game of the schedule. Playing the conference champions of Iamestown College on Armistice Day on a slow, heavy field, they out- charged and out-fought the Iimmies at all times and turned in a very good all around performance. Both teams were in scoring position only once all day and as neither had enough punch to score the game ended in a scoreless tie. - FOOTBALL 73' ISU I7 FCKEL 741Il'!Qll' BILL SHIRLEY fllltlfli BERNA RD I ll EMERT Q1rm'lrrlmz'k HARRY SCI IOONOVER Gmini ALAN XVICKS 1 M L ,yay , ,. . 0 lfzrlllmclg BILL PO'l'THAST of M HILL MORSCH C!'1Ill'I' IIM 'I'RliGI.AWNY 151111 BILL CODIJING Qlmrtrrlnfcfq HAROLD ANI PERSON Guard IAMES H. Of the large squad which turned out only three were previous lettermen and of these three only one had been a member of the previous year's squad. Feldmann and Pierce had both won their letters as members of the 1933 squad and Warren Pederson was returning to engage in his fourth year as an upholder of the Viking prestige on the basketball rloor. The rest of the squad was composed chieHy of freshmen and sophomores. Sathe and Codding were outstanding as the result of their line play as reserves on the 1935 squad. Pietz CONFERENCE GAMES ,THROUGHOUT THE SEASON the Vikings played every team in the conference at least once. The first conference game was played here with Iamestown on Ianuary 24. The smooth conference champions from Iamestown college took advantage of the inexperienced Vikings to the tune of a 57-30 score. From then on a series of seven straight conference games was played. ln the First of these, the Vikings asserted their superiority over the Mayville Comets by outplaying them with a substantial 35-26 margin. The following week the Vikings played host to the well-balanced contingent from Minot Teachers college. Although outplayed during the greater part of the game the Beavers came back in the closing minutes with a victory at 27-25. A In the second meeting of the Vikings and the Iimmies Coach McLeod,s charges turned in a noticeably more effective performance than in the first meeting but the hot streak of Erik Peterson, Iamestown center, who rung up a total of eleven held goals, again put the Vikings on the short end of a 57-35 score. A much improved Mayville quint furnished the opposition for the next game. Lewy Lee's well trained five put on a good exhibition of what can be accomplished by sheer fight and aggressiveness when they put on an end of the game rally which put them out in front 34-31 at the final gun. When Coach Harry Weinbergen of Dickinson Normal brought his Savages here the following week the Vikings showed a complete reversal of form. The Savages invaded the Valley City camp as heavy favorites as a result of the surprising upset of the Iimmies. With Sathe leading the scoring the Vikings put on their best performance of the year and came off with a 39-33 victory. 3 BASKETBALL - 77ll - ' --- - - - - PLAYING on the Wahpeton Science school floor the following week the Vikings fell victim to the Wildcats by a 53-38 score and again the next week when they journeyed to Minot and met a hot-shooting band of Beavers to lose 52-30. The next two games played on successive nights with the Ellendale Normal Dusties decided little, as each team took one game. In the first game played on the local Hoor the Vikings showed good form in running up a 37-23 margin of victory, but fell before the accurate shooting of the Dusties on their own Hoor the following night. NON-CONFERENCE GAMES THE 1936 basketball season was officially opened when the strong Huron College quint invaded the Viking camp and went home with a 37-24 victory. The following week Coach Bill Carberry's Aberdeen Normal school Wolves presented a strong, fast breaking offensive which caught the Vikings off guard and netted them a 45-33 win. Showing surprising improvement over their previous performances the Vikings gave a good exhibition of what they were capable of doing when they routed a well recom- mended team from the Bottineau School of Forestry by the overwhelming score of 52-33. After the two weeks vacation at Christmas the Vikings continued to show steady improvement as proved in their second game with the Aberdeen Wolves. Displaying a complete reversal of form from their Hrst meeting they outplayed the Wolves throughout and although winning by the narrow margin of one basket, 38-36, played a superior brand of ball throughout. The only other non-conference game played this year was with the rangy St. Cloud Teachers College quint. The great height and wealth of reserve material available on the St. Cloud team proved too much for the Vikings in the last quarter of the game when St. Cloud ran up their substantial lead. Until the last quarter the game was played on even terms. IAMESTOWN GAME - BASKETBALL -- - ......lll78 INT RAMURALS INTRAMURALS INTRAMURAL COMPETITION this year was unusually keen and caused considerable campus comment. Until the Final game no accurate predictions could be made as the results were not consistent. The hnal title holder was not determined until the last day of the tournament when the Hesperians defeated the favored Tau Sigs by a score of 22-ll to win the title. The lead was never securely owned by any team throughout the tournament. At Hrst the Tau Sigs seemed the outstanding possibility but fell before the onslaught of the strong E. B. C. team. With the E. B. C.'s in the lead it seemed that they would capture the title but they in turn were taken by the Hesperians who had not been conceded much of a chance up to that time. The intramurals were under the direction of Professor Spalding with the assistance of a board consisting of one member from each society. RESERVES UNDER THE TUTELAGE of student coach Ralph Bradner, the reserve basketball squad fur- nished keen competition for the varsity quint this year. Although they played only two games during the season the squad members appeared regularly for practice. Several were promoted to the varsity before the season closed. The reserve squad was composed chiefly of promising freshman and sophomore athletes and from all evidences many of them will be making strong bids for varsity berths next year. Games played included one with the College High but no Final decision was reached as the game ended in a tie, and there was no overtime period. The other game was with the strong Iamestown reserves. The Viking reserves had the same fate as the varsity and fell before the smooth working Iimmies by a large score. Other games were cancelled because of road conditions which made travel impossible. Retaining all the outstanding members of the team from the year before they hung up a series of records which will, in conference competition at least, remain intact for some time. DRAKE RELAYS Although not placing in the finals of the Drake Relays both Haines and Shannon gave a good account of themselves in the qualifying rounds. Haines finished third in the 100-yard dash qualifying heat against such runners as Iesse Owens of Ohio State. Shannon in his favorite event, the discus throw, placed sixth. DUAL MEET WITH IAMESTOWN On April 30 the Vikings dropped a dual meet to Iamestown College with a total score of 68-58 being made. Gronlie, Haines, and Shannon scored a total of 16, 15, and 19 points, respectively. QUADRANGULAR MEET In a meet with teams from Aberdeen Northern Normal, Iamestown College, Ellendale Normal and Industrial School, the Valley City Teachers placed first with a total of 55 5f6 points. STATE MEET The Vikings finished second in the State Meet, losing by IZ points to the University. Haines was easily the outstanding athlete on the field, scoring a total of 15 points for high honors and setting three records. He established records in the 100 at 9.7, in the 220 at 21.7, and broad jump at 23 feet and 8 inches. Dick Gronlie ran him a close second by making a total of 12 points. CONFERENCE MEET The Vikings scored 43M points in taking the conference track and field title for the third consecutive time. Records were set by Haines, Shannon, and Kempf. MARQUETTE AND MINNEAPOLIS A. A. U. In the Marquette Relays Doc Haines again made an impressive performance by placing third in the 100-yard dash against the fastest sprinters in the country. Valley City Teachers were represented in the Minneapolis A. A. U. meet by Doc Haines and jules Friestad. Haines took first in the 100 and 220 dashes and fourth in the broad jump.
