This afforded an op- portunity for Coach Hurst to size up the various men, and to get some idea as to the possibilities for t .l another conference championship team. l N. A record sized squad of men responded to the' hrs! call for basketball practice. The mosl outstand- , W ing and promising among these were the veterans Hanna, Kirkness, and Burchill of the '24 champion- l 5 l, ship aggregation. Ridgeway of the North Dakota University was in a class by himself for the center l position. Thayer, Ployhar, and Maresh, the stalwarts of the Valley Cit High School team, also made l y Q strong bids for regular positions. I H Ridgeway was elected captain, and proved himself a steady and consistent player during the entire 4 season at center. His stature enabled him to record very regularly a goodly number of the field goals in every game. The ability of Hanna and Kirkness showed them to be the two best guards in the con- ference. The two forward wings were held down by Ployhar and Thayer, a pair of previous high r W school notables. ' I, 3 The first two college tilts were with the Mayville and Dickinson aggregations. The team worked I remarkably well, and showed mid-season form in both of these contests. The Aberdeen and Moorhead r ll quints followed in rapid succession: although offering stronger opposition, they also fell before the , ll attack of our onrushing Vikings, The other conference winnings were with the Ellendale, the May- r l ville, and the Minot teams. These victories clearly showed that our Vikings deserved to be conference 9 champions. ll il The climax of the basketball season was the much anticipated two-game series with Jamestown I College. The much coveted Championship for S. T. C. could not be possible until Jamestown was l defeated. This task, of course, was not an easy one, and to attempt it required the support of every I I college student. Although the spirit and cheering were present, we failed to gain a victory. That the I l college cheering body were behind the team was shown when a special train was again secured, and ' l four hundred students accompanied the team to Jamestown. It was their presence that helped the ' , Vikings to do as well as they did. hlamestown's revenge was complete when they succeeded in de- . feating us the second game by a I3 lo 12 score on our floor. The last game will always be remembered 1 by the State College rootersg it was all the more spectacular for the reason that the Conference l l rested on the outcome of the contest. It was a real climax for the linal home game of the season. V The State Teachers College can be assured that if the team that represented us this year returns, i In it will be one of the best in the history of the S. T.
