rv BASEBALL I 924 Baseball again demonstarted its popularity by being selected in preference to track as the outdoor sport for the spring quarter. The fact that letters were to be awarded to the men making the team made the competition for the various positions extremely keen. An interesting schedule was arranged, consisting of six games with various conference clubs. The formation of the city league also added to the attractiveness of the schedule. The city league was composed of four clubs of which the Vikings were a significant one. When the league disbanded, the Vikings were in the second position, having won nine games and lost four. The outsanding conference teams played were Jamestown, Moorhead, and Ellendale. Two games were scheduled with each of these clubs meaning that three games were played on our home field. Two of the six conference games were won by th Vikings, the defeated teams being Ellendale Normal School, and Jamestown College. The remainder of the games were played on foreign fields and re- sulted in defeats for S. T. C. The Moorhead Peds won the conference honors, proving themselves the fastest team in the loop. The outstanding hurlers for the Vikings were C. Bahmer, and Thompsong the work of Bahmer received considerable comment throughout the season. As catcher, Kirlcness performed in big league style. and was one of the topnotchers in the batting averages. Curley and Kurth were the relief pitchers. The infield positions were ably filled by Brown at first base: Bachman at secondg Tollefson at third: and Barringer at shortstop. Bachman at second was the main cog in the infield. Rustand, O'Neil. and Reed formed a trio of outhelders which no other conference team could excel. Speedy fielding and heavy hitting characterized their play. The team as a whole was fastg laclc of hitters was responsible for many of the defmts. Baseball is becoming more popular as a major sport at S. T. C.g more interest is being shown each year. iles: . - ' 'M 'M 152 r H , t
