Among the beautiful valleys of the Sheyenne, For honest labor and for learning we stand, And unto thee we pledge our heart and hand, Dear Alma Mater Valley High. Delightful task! to rear the tender thought, to teach th young idea how to shoot.--Thomson. L. Bohnlwfl The class of 1940 is honored to dedicate this volume of the Sheyenne to Dr. J. F. L. Bohnhoft, pastor of the Trin- ity Lutheran church, who has been president of the Board of Education for nearly thirty years. His understanding and cheerful guidance have won the love and respect ot all, he has fulfilled his oFfice with the dignity that such a position demands. Through his efforts, the scope of subiects and projects within the school have been widened, and opportunities for vocational guidance and train- ing have been increased. In order to show our sincere appreciation of his work in promoting the progress of the school, in helping to secure more modern methods of education, and providing a means for advancement into the Held of knowledge, we take this means to express that appreciation. ri r helmet Seated Ba 1 Im 1 a WIITIAOOP l record only hodrs of roy The many shrnlng hours of your pleasant days ln Valley Crty l-llgh School are here ID recorded Thls IS Intended as a book of mem ones for those who wlll perhaps IU later years turn back the pages of trrne and dream of school days s It . There are short stories, long stories, novels, novelettes, plays, playlets, reference books, biographies, and even a waste basket on the floor Tor gum deposits. In the first floor hall ot our alnta mater stands our friend Abe Lincoln. OT course he's only ci statue but there is not rnuch ot student lite that es- capes hirn. Abe sees all those fond lovers who bill and coo and whisper sweet nothings. He also sees those last-minute students who hurriedly dash oft their as- signments at 8142 in the morning and then scamper madly to their classes, So this space in our annual is given To Abe, honest Abe, who has probably seen more Valley City High School life than any other tixture ot the builci- ing, YY..c--,.,.., ,--...--Y ........:- . emi, A,-E-.,.. ,,....,,...',fen.-......- A Y .,.. Many were the reasons behind the assembly meetings called this past year. Every game-day, Friday, there was pep rally and varied indeed were the types of pro- grams presented, with each version of the forth-coming game an altogether different one. Who ever heard of a pep meeting where no one yells? There must be something wrong! There wasn't exactly anything wrong. lt was iust a pantomime pep program! Strange goings- on here in Valley High! The whole assembly was carried out in pantomime speeches, yells, pre- sentations and all, and not a sound was heard. By way of contrast, the next committee planned a swing meeting. On the theme of Oh, Johnny a girls' swing quartet changed the words to describe each member of the basketball team. Another group serenaded the students with instrumental swing numbers, much to the delight of the iitterbugs . But pep meetings did not provide the only entertainment for the students. There were booster assemblies, a Christmas program, Constitution day speeches, and scheduled Northwest Assemblies. Often talented students in the school displayed their special ability to the delight of the rapt audience. Pictured on the receiving end are Sam Zimmerman, Ralph Willey, iuniors, Arleigh Abrahamson and Robert Neil, seniors. A school paper must be financed that is certain. These domestic looking girls, Lois Risa, senior, Marlys Murdoch and Alice Eggert, juniors, who are part of the Hi-Liners hnance committee, are busy preparing ham sandwiches to be sold in the iournalism room. The money realized from the sale took the Hi-Liners out of the red l-leave-ho! Dale Bergan, Alvin Lieberman, and James Persons, iuniors, display their manly strength by lugging the benches back from the court house after the home room pictures had been taken on the terrace. This proves they are just Boy Scouts at heart. A Christmas Star for Olga was the Christmas play given in the high school assembly, in which members at the dramatic club displayed their acting ability, Beatrice Grotte, sophomore, directed the play. The cast ot characters include ed three slightly uppish society matrons, Elsie Fritch, Mary Margaret Sanger, and Jean Bierke, a good spirit, Marieanne Sunde, a bad spirit, Jan- et Simon, and a Norwegian maid, Joyce Potter.
