It continues to develop these X gy-5' lblfuhabits and attitudes into the fine character of worthy manhood and ' J 4, by womanhood. The school seeks to prepare every child, regardless of ,J- ' 5 race or condition, to achieve for himself: The ability to read and write, to think, study, and act. Good books are like interesting people: the better one knows them, the more one likes them. The only way to know books is to read them. Believing that the main objective in teaching literature in high school is the cultivation of a delight in reading, the English department of the Valley City High School has a complete course in literature with student interest as the guiding principle. Great as literature is, correct speech is an important factor in the education of youth, so carefully organized courses are given that teach correct speech habits. Essay and short story contests are sponsored, and the best work is sent to the universities for competition with other schools. Classic and foreign languages are included in the high school curriculum with definite objectives for the first two years of high school Latin and French. The immediate objective is the progessive develop- ment of power to read and to understand the language. The ultimate objectives are those abilities, knowledges, attitudes, and habits which continue to function after the school study of Latin and French has ceased. These are: Increased understanding of those elements in English which are related to Latin and French, increased ability to read, speak and write English, and a development of an historical and cultural background. Valley City High School offers four years of Latin, and two years of French in its curriculum. ll
