S 6 Mmm ilu? qv' 1 .Cg to Upon taking both games from Santa Rosa, leading contender in the North Bav League, the Apaches earned their first bid to the Tournament of Champions. After having lost 7 of their first 8 games, the Vallejo Apaches closed out the season with l8 straight wins including impressive victories over three of the teams they had lost to earlier. The sports editor of the Vallejo Times-Herald made some fine remarks about the Tournament preparations, which were under the able direction of Mrs. Peg Merrill, Mr. Virl Swan, and our principal, lVlr. Al Siegler: The wheels started to roll, headbands and feathers had to be ordred and made. Each rooter had to have a red and white pom pon, i9 buses has to be ordered, the student body was alerted, 750 students signed up a S3 for three nights, permission slips had to be signed by parents and returned. Advisors made charts of the rooting sections, conferences were held with the yell staff, names of yells were printed on indi- vidual cards and, most important of all, two practice sessions were held on Corbus Field with not a soul around but 750 rooters. To the tune of spirited music by 30 top musicians from Virl Swan's pep band, students entered from two directions waving their pom pons up and down in unison. Once they were in, every- one sat down in one motion. The way the yell staff had the section cutting off yells at the end left people open-mouthed, Songs were sung and yells were given in a manner which would put any university or college to shame. Every one of the students did something for the history of Vallejo and rooting section in general. They deserved what we can call an All-America Championship Award for Excellence.
