NORTHERN LIGHTS 73 PRESENTED BY THE SENIOR CLASS I o, g VALIER HIGH SCHOOL VALIER MONTANA TURN! TURN! TURN! (To Everything There Is A Season) To everything (turn, turn, turn) There is a season (turn, turn, turn) And a time for every purpose under heaven. A time to be born, a time to die; a time to plant, a time to reap; A time to kill, a time to heal; a time to laugh, a time to weep. To everything (turn, turn, turn) There is a season (turn, turn, turn) And a time for every purpose under heaven. A time to build up, a time to break down; a time to dance, a time to mourn A time to cast away stones, a time to gather stones together. To everything (turn, turn, turn) There is a season (turn, turn, turn) And a time for every purpose under heaven. A time of live, a time of hate; a time of war, a time of peace; A time you may embrace, a time to refrain from embracing. To everything (turn, turn, turn) There is a season (turn, turn, turn) And a time for every purpose under heaven. A time to gain, a time to lose; a time to rend, a time to sew; A time to love, a time to hate; a time for peace, I swear it's not too late. To everything (turn, turn, turn) There is a season (turn, turn, turn) And a time for every purpose under heaven. He Lured Her to the Primrose Path, but He was Nipped in the Bud was one of the two one act plays presented by the Seniors on May 3. It was a melodrama with the action taking place in Muddy Gap near Fort Thriving. A few exciting scenes, such as PFC Will Dew s duel with Sidney Shift added up to make the play a very exciting one. Is this how you use this gun? Now what was my line? Directors: Mr. Fredrickson Mr. Barsanti Fly to my side and be comforted. SENIOR CLASS ONE ACT DRAMA The Grad The Last Grad was the other one act play presented by the Seniors on May 3. Three different periods of time were portrayed as Charlie Winters relived two former class reunions. In the scenes that took place in the present, Charlie is the last surviving member of his class, and he feels this accomplishment makes up for his being the class loser. Now you see, it was like this. . . CAST FRONT ROW: Dan Sullivan-Barney Haversham, Nancy Crawford-Mary Sheppard Haversham, Mark Costello-Jefferson Hall. They also supplied clowns for the Homecoming Day Parade, served a Father-Daughter Banquet, held an Easter Egg hunt in the park, and served the cVc Ladies Night Banquet with the hlep of their chapter mothers, Mrs. Lola Geiger, and Mrs. Gertie Vanden Bos. The Valier FHA'ers also hosted the District I FHA Convention in November. Diane Van Gorden was the District Chairman and Kathy Kovatch was District Songleader. Marie Curry was elected new District Vice-Chairman. In March four of the most active girls in the chapter and Miss Shepherd attended the State Convention in Billings. They assumed all the duties of librarians in checking out books, keeping the shelves and stacks neat, and in making sure that complete and undistrubed silence reigned in the Library. In early May, they were rewarded for their efforts with a field trip to the Great Falls Public Library, and other points of interest in Great Falls. Four students, two each semester, worked with Audio-Visual aids. They worked to run the listening booths in the library and repaired tapes and other equipment. Hey Anita, why does Jim look so guilty? The year was started out with all members busy working on new uniforma and better ideas on how to carry out the coming activities. When football season started, the Panther Paws were ready with enthusiasm and gusto. This year something different was tried. The members took charge of ticket sales at the girls basketball games. Wrestling and basketball consumed most of the time and energy with such things as ushering, ticket taking, programs, and flag carrying. The annual drill meet saw the Panther Paws in full force as they helped bring about another successful meet. They rounded out the year by assisting the track program by helping to run events during track meets. Jeanne at her best. Panther Paws in action. Who's backyard party is it this time? The Panther is a bi-monthly publication of the fun and facts around VHS. This year, the staff was under the supervision of Mr. Barsanti, English instructor. The hours volunteered by the students proved to be well worth the time due to the experience and knowledge gained in the field of journalism. As a tradition, the last few issues were reserved for the Senior profiles, making our final days more memorable. Typewriters are funny and so is Agnes, PEP CLUB Kathy Rittel-President, Deanna Geiger-Vice-President, Jill Geiger-Secretary, and Jeanne Geiger-Treasurer, led the 1972-73 Pep Club. The group supported the Fighting Panthers at football, basketball, and wrestling functions. In order to be able to send buses to out-of-town games and matches, they also ran a concession stand at home games and sold Panther booster buttons. Miss Shepherd and Miss Powell adivsed the group and helped in building all-around support for the VHS teams. Supporters display spirit. Eh! What's that you say? The Student Board was a new voice for the benefit of the teachers and students. Certain faculty and representatives from the classes made up the group. The main function of the board was setting up a recreational lounge. Vending machines and pin pong tables provided the outlet from school routine. Monitors were on hand to keep the students in line, and supervise clean up. Hopefully the board can extend its activities through the coming years. Isn't gambling illegal? The long line of workers! The staff for the production of the 1973 Northern Lights yearbook formed early in 1972. Diane Van Gorden and Deanna Geiger were elected Co-Editors and Velda Lund and Robbie Vanden Bos were chosen Business Managers. The staff of interested people then divided into two parts with some canvasing the town to sell books, ads, and brands, while the rest went to work with the cameras and pencils to catch a hint of the action in VHS. As the year went on, the staff found that just meeting Monday evenings wasn't enough, and they began to meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays after school to fill their deadlines. As in past years, Mr. Van Gorden was the adviser for the yearbook. Decisions, decisions. MONTANA POWER COMPANY 37 THE TIME OF GRATITUDE. . . Mr. Larry Hodgson We, the class of 1973, dedicate our Northern Lights Yearbook to Mr. Larry Hodgson. For two consecutive years, he served as our class adviser. Though he is not with us in our last year, he still remains a friend and prominent figure at VHS. In the past four years, Mr. Hodgson taught math, science, and drivers education in Valier. He is presently a school bus driver and retains his drivers education course for the benefit of the high school students. To you, Mr. Hodgson, we say Thanks for time, service and self. 38 S PO RTS FOOTBALL FRONT ROW: David Swanson, Lennie Toren, Derek Swank, Don Monroe, Randy Haynes, Maury Rideout, Joe Fitzpatrick, Clay McApline, Burt Geiger. Coaches: Mr. Jerry Morse, Mr. Charles Van Gorden, Mr. Paul Kneuppel. The 1972 football season for the fighting Panthers was well worth the time and effort put forth into forming an organized gridiron machine. Inexperience and injuries is the common pitfall and cannot be used as an excuse for losing, because all the teams have the same problem. The Panthers fought hard when the going got tough, which was most of the time, and never gave up. Everyone on the squad got to try their skills at one time or the other; thus, the spirit of all the players was high. Football teaches an individual to work and function with ten other players on an equal basis. A person playing football has responsibility and tries his hardest to fulfill the needed effort to get the job done. The 1972 football season was a success in the minds of every player in every aspect. SECOND ROW: Coach-Mr. Morse, Curt Aaberg, John Vanden Bos, Don Bilbro, Bob Reishus, Chuck King, Mark Costello, Wayne Dean, and Manager-Randy Rideout. The 1972-73 wrestling season was a big success all around this year. The Fighting Panthers showed their true colors when they came out onto the mat. The team was fairly young, but there wasn't a school in our district that knew they would have an easy victory when we stepped out to wrestle. At divisional, the Panthers were edged out of 3rd place by 2-J- points by Fairfield. They went to State with a winning attitude and held their own all the way. The squad was undermanned this year, but it didn't hinder the performances of the individuals. At most meets the score was 18 or more to 0 against Valier prior to the first match because of forfeits. Overcoming this deficit wasn't easy. When we did, there was no stopping us. Mr. Morse did an outstanding job coaching his squad and should be commended for his time and effort put forth above and beyond his normal duty. Varsity Cheerleaders: (TOP TO BOTTOM) Marie Curry, Dorothy BaiTon, Deanna Geiger, Kathy Kovatch, Ros Habets. Gwenna Briden, Sheryl Anderson, Jeannie Nelson, and Kathy Moon, were the Junior Varsity Cheerleaders for 1972-1973. Besides cheering at all the Junior Varsity games, they made blips to help defray the cost of their uniforms. Both squads held practices on Monday and Wednesday nights after school. Kathy and Deanna Junior Varsity Cheerleaders: Gwenna Briden, Jeannie Nelson, Sheryl Anderson, (STANDING) Kathy Moon. Basketball Was The 1972-73 basketball season started out promising. Due to a few casualties, the team was slowed down somewhat. The Panther team was a young and inexperienced team with all sophomores except four of the team members. There were only two letter-men back from the previous year. The Panthers fought hard throughout the whole season, but weren't good enough to win any conference games.
