As the night progressed our Fighting Panthers battled against Shelby in a hot rough game. At half time the spot light turned to our high-stepping CaValiers. Following that, the poster winners were announced with the Seniors seizing 1st place. The evening ended by Shelby squeezing a victory over the Panthers. Does it hurt Munch? St-r-r-r-e-e-t-t-t-ch 25 Go get' em Honey. Faculty Slipped by A-Squad C’mon Paul, can’t we play! Pretty popular huh, Nancy. Gee, it went in! He does have a prettier pose, Len. The annual varsity-faculty game was held again this year. It was a colorful and well-fought game by both top-notch teams. But due to the number of past basketball greats among the teachers the A-squad was not victorious. The results of the basketball game staged between the B-squad basketball team and wrestling matmen were surprising with the wrestlers coming out on top. Considering the obvious advantages of height and skill of the high school girls basketball team, it was not surprising when they won the game with the 8th grade girls. 26 Wilt's Daughters Front Row: Syd Kincaid, Gaile Whitcomb; Back Row: Nancy Hayne, Captain, and Marie Curry. The games lasted two weeks for both league with the third week consisting of the play offs to determine the champions of each. In the girls section we saw the team of Wilts Daughters roll to an easy championship. That left the Frank'n Berries to grow in second. Over in the boys, we found the Barbershop Sextet winning, but not quite so decidedly. This left it up to the Grumblers to step into 2nd place. The overall intramural season saw alot of good games with people enjoying it all. Frank'n Berries Front Row: Jacqui Nelson, Julie Pepion; 2nd Row: Jeannie Nelson, Nancy Crawford, Captain, Kathy Moon. They learn that it is not all down hill and easy going; that there are some hard knocks, sometimes when you hate the boss but must bite your tongue, and that you must get up and go even when it would be a lot easier to throw in the towel. The team of 1971 fit all of these ideals. There were lots of ups and downs but not once did they quit. They always kept coming back for more, proving to me that they have the high ideals and principles that it will take to survive in the world of work after high school. I have had football teams with better won and loss records but I have never had a team that I was prouder of. To me they exemplify the true spirit of 'Fighting Panthers'. Young but Mighty This wrestling season the Valier 'Fighting Panthers' were young, but led by a couple of very capable senior leaders. We ended the season with a less than 50-50 win-loss record, but this could easily have been reversed with a little more depth on the team. There were a few highlights of the season. These were: second place finish in our Lake Francis Tournament, beating Conrad, four wrestlers placing at divisional, and last but not least Leonard's 4th place finish at the State Wrestling Tournament. The 1971-72 season wasn't a winning season, but by the end we had put together good team effort. Also, we were beginning to capitalize upon our height. We lost a number of players through injury route which is always going to hurt. It would be hard to say one person did more than another because all came out fighting by the end of the season. From this young team will come, I'm sure, some very fine ballplayers for Valier High School. Coach Ballantyne C-SQUAD Front Row: Duane Toren, Raleigh King, Richie Fitzpatrick, and Ralph King. The team had many exciting victories and a few discouraging failures that made an overall interesting season. This sport has changed in the last couple of years in that it has gained importance and participation throughout the league. The girls involved showed an interest that brought out talent and enthusiasm from all. M. Nancy Hayne No, girls it's like this. Ballet, what form? My chance to be like Big Lew! Sorry, Mike isn't here Deanna This year's team was made up of underclassmen. They worked hard during the track season and will be returning again next year. Some of the potentially good individuals include Randy in the discus; Robbie, pole vault; David, high hurdles; and Gary, 440 yard dash. With the assistance of Maury in the low hurdles and Clayton in the javelin we should have some added depth next year. The mile relay made up of John VandenBos, Robbie DeBoo, David Olson, and Gary Bruce came out with the fastest time in the last five years of relays from Valier. Front Row: Gary Bruce, Ron Moon, Mr. Ballantyne, coach. Second Row: Maury Rideout, Robbie DeBoo, David Olson. Back Row: Clayton McAlpine, Randy Rideout, John VandenBos. Boys Track Involved Eight John Went to State A Freshman joined the team this year and went on to state, proving he has the makings for a track career in his upcoming high school years. John VandenBos, entered in the 880 yard run in the local meets and went on to District from District he qualified to continue on to the Divisional and from Divisional went to State. There he placed 6th, in the 880 yard run. John holds the best Freshman time for anyone from Valier. His time is 2:04:3. Good luck John. TIMM'S REPAIR SHOP and HAWKIN KARLSGODT This year the girls track team took part in ten meets, plus Divisional and State track meets. Six of the girls lettered. They were Trudy Speer, Anita Widhalm, Julie Pepion, Jane Getts, Georgia Phillips, and Maureen Widhalm. Several girls also participated in the AAU Meet in Kalispell the 1st week of June. Third Row: Julie Pepion, Irene Getts, Sheryl Anderson, Georgia Phillips. Back Row: Jane Getts, Mr. Knueppel, Coach, Anita Miller. Girls Team Composed of Underclassmen Two Juniors Place at State These two Junior girls participated in track to the fullest degree possible this year. They both were entitled to go to Divisional and then went on to State. Maureen Widhalm ran the 880 yard run and the mile run. She holds the State Class B record, in both, with times of 2:24:4 and 5:31:9 respectively. Jane Getts, in her first year of track, placed 5th at State in the discus with a throw of 94'8 . The work was divided into two sections. Business Managers, who were headed by Donna Myhre and LenVandenBos, sold advertising and subscriptions and this year spaces for brands also. The other sections of Editors drew up the yearbook. They revised copies, drew the layouts, typed, identified and cropped pictures. They were headed by Co-editors Rhonda Barron and Gary Casey. Jayme Nelson was our photographer. She was on hand for all events to snap a few pictures. When she couldn't be present she was assisted by the co-editors. The staff's adviser was Mrs. VanGorden who put in many hours with us, helping and directing us in anyway she could help us put out a better yearbook. Though at times we thought we would never finish it, we worked till the final deadline to produce a book of memories from 1971-72.
