The Class of 1970 Presents the Northern Lights Valier High School Valier, Montana Dedication Because he has worked for and with us, because he has given generously of his time and wisdom--words are a poor substitute with which to express our sincere respect and admiration for this man. He is head of our track program, was our Sophomore and Junior class sponsor and voluntarily gave so much time to the success of our Junior-Senior Prom. Everyone respects this teacher and looks to him for advice and help. He is never too busy to stop and talk with a student or to help in any way he can. In appreciation for such devoted service, the Yearbook Staff proudly dedicates the 1970 Northern Lights Annual to Mr. Norman Ballantyne. iiriiiiiiriifii Administration Faculty Dear Graduating Seniors, Your years at Valier Schools are finished. Your education for life is not. You will get out of life what you put into it and this is somewhat the same as your years at the Valier Public School. You have had your ups and downs while in school. They will continue in the future. Some of you will make it, some won ' t. But remember, there are all sorts of opportunities to advance yourself in years to come, so whether you make it or not depends solely on YOU. Sincerely, Robert S. Initiation and installation of new officers and members opened the year with Mr. Sindelar assisting with the installation ceremony. The FTA carried out National Education Week by putting up a bulletin board and window display and having a proclamation issued by the mayor. The high school also sponsored Parents ' Day during this week to encourage parent interest in the educational process at Valier High School by allowing them to participate in classes for a day. Two faculty members attended a meeting and related their experiences as student teachers and as first- year teachers. Later in the year, FTA members were allowed to teach a unit of their choice. A student exchange was carried out between Shelby and Valier in which members of each chapter attended classes in the other ' s school. Project 18 was sponsored by the FTA which gave all of the students of VHS the opportunity to voice their opinions on the lowering of the voting age to 18 or 19. A picnic in the spring concluded the activities of the FTA for the 1969-70 school year. © IKisSia] 1 dStt 1 i w ' j£Hi tt Honor Society Sponsors Talent Show Greg Harwood 1st place instrumental, piano solo. The band, meeting five days a week instead of three days as in previous years, showed much progress and improvement. It serves the school as a pep band by playing at games and pep rallies, as a marching band in parades, and as a concert band at its annual Fall, Christmas, and Spring concerts. A highlight of the band ' s year was their performance at the half-time of the Homecoming game. They had practiced many weeks to perfect their formations; a rocket, a face, and a mountain. Some of the projects done this year were: repainting the goal posts and side line markers on the football field, cutting Christmas trees to be used in the High School, providing candy machines for the Students, and presenting an Anti- Smoking program, which carried a very important message for all, to the Junior High and P. T. A. Besides the small jobs done there was much involvement with the other Student councils in our district. The Student governments of our district joined together to make our schools heard in the State Student Council Convention held in Billings. Tony Harwood, Mark Hammer, and Bob Kovatch, who ran for Vice- President of the State wide organization, went to the large convention as delegates. Bob lost a close election but he did represent Valier and the other schools in our District very well. Within the school the Council worked with the teachers and School Board by giving suggestions for a new dress code and new rules for dances and inform- ing students about various events and curfew. The most important job was working with the other organizations in the school to build school spirit and encourage more activities. CHOP! CHOP! School Spirit is Encouraged and Emphasized by Pep Club The Pep Club began the year by selling Panther pins to encourage school spirit. Football and basketball seasons kept Pep Club members busy not only supporting the Panthers, but also selling concessions at home games. in keeping with school spirit, the Pep Club sponsored the Purple and White Day dance which concluded a day of sports activities with Browning. Interesting Work is Done By Library Staff The Library Staff is the group responsible for keeping order in the library, checking out books, helping people find materials, and changing the bulletin boards periodically for such things as holidays, tournaments, and National Library Week. This year in order to stress National Library Week, the librarians set up Ye Ol ' Book Shop, a used paperback book store, in the Conference Room of the library. They put up several posters for this as well as painting psychedelic designs on the windows. Last spring the librarians took a day off and went on a field trip to Lethbridge, Alberta. New members were initiated at the first meeting, and Mrs. Harry Swanson and Mrs. Norman Holdren were elected FHA mothers. The chapter ' s work was centered around school and community. School projects included concessions at football games, the Hayride, the Homecoming dance, and the Christmas formal which was co- sponsored with the V- Club. A Sunday breakfast, the Co-Op Banquet, and the Senior Tea and Style Show were community projects. A program on birth defects and mental retardation, a handicrafts program, and the Easter Egg Hunt were sponsored as public services. -____ , 4f |XftCNj FRONT ROW: Helen Stephen, Vice President; Pam Crawford, President; Jean Wheeler, Secretary. The CaValiers work out regularly almost the year around to achiev e this physical fitness and prowess, and thus have gained the admiration of the people in this area of the state. During the Basketball season, they performed at four home games and seven away games and at both the District and the Divisional Tournaments during the half-time of the finals. Mr. Gary Miller, a student teacher of Northern Montana College taught English II, III, and IV. 26 iiniiiniiiiii Activities The Team Known g As the Fighting Panthers In our estimation the 1969 football team was a great success. Although we won only three out of eight games we had a ' winning season. ' By this we mean that everything we did during this football season was 100 percent all the way toward making a team to be proud of. We, the tri-captains, are proud to be able to say we were a part of this team, and we are sure all the members of the team share this belief.
