MR. HOUGHTON Dedication We, the Class of '54, proudly dedicate our yearbook to Mr. Glenn Houghton. During our four years of high school he has played lilting music for our parties, has taught us commercial studies, and has given many of us piano lessons. This even-tempered, good-natured teacher, who never has a harsh word for anyone, but always has a word of gentle encouragement and patience, is a favorite of all the students of Valier High School. Superintendent, G, H. BELISLE Superintendent Glenn Harold Belisle has completed his second successful year as superintendent of Valier schools. Since Mr. Belisle's arrival the schools have continued a steady growth. The enrollment has shown an increase of forty students. Landscaping of the new building has begun, and a thick lawn now covers the gridiron. A new bus route has been added also. The elementary grades have moved into the new grade building. In interscholastic contests, athletic activities, journalism and agriculture, the school has ranked high. Valier schools have run smoothly, efficiently and effectively. Superintendent Belisle is instructor of economic-civics and class advisor to the seniors, and heads a faculty of seventeen. Mrs. Carl Monroe is clerk of the school board and secretary to the superintendent. Clerk, DORA MONROE LINDAHL ILLUSTRATES WHEATSTONE BRIDGE TO PHYSICS CLASS Left to right: J. Freeman, L. Class Will I, Dale Arnst, leave nothing to nobody 'cause it ain't worth it. I, Ben Beaudry, leave my ability to play the guitar and sing to Butch Lauffer. We, Bonnie Bowman and Lillian Stokes, leave, hoping never to come back. I, Evelyn Bowman, leave my feminine figure to Shirley Johnson. We, Susan Slezak and Myrna Briden, leave our position with the faculty to Barbara and Carol. 1, Pat Chausse, leave a few honors to Antoinette widhalm, who is sure to use them. I, Dale Dean, leave Gloye, but not for long. I, Betty DeSmet, leave my unsuccessful flirting to anyone who can improve it. We, John Freeman and Kenny Munyon, leave our Casanova charms to Ivan Doig and Gerald Mallo. I, Bill Ginter, leave some of my height to Charles Trafelet in hopes he will get taller. I, Mary Ann Habets, leave my tumbling ability to Barbara Bowman. I, Sandy Holm, leave that crazy trombone to the band for those extra hot notes. I, Kay Mallette, leave my scoring average to Del Christiaens. 1, Mary Norsby, leave my job at the lunch room to anyone who is interested. We, Bob Palin and Dean Swank, leave our ability to run things for next year's seniors. I, Betty Salois, leave all my red hair to Barbara Shephard. We, Chuck Smith and Marvin White, leave the old club house to the Class of '55. I, Pat Strandwold, leave my free afternoons to anyone who can get away with it. I, Mearlin Thomas, leave because school is moving too fast. I, Bob Wentworth, leave my Toni wave to Ira. We, Martha Woldstad and Roma Woods, leave our shorthand conspiracy to next year's class in hopes they won't get caught. CLASS MOTTO: Worry is the interest paid by those who borrow trouble. CLASS COLOR: Gold and Silver CLASS FLOWER: Red and White Carnation The Class of 54 leave to the faculty many grey hairs. To the Juniors--to do as little as we did. To the Sophomores--we leave nothing. To the Freshmen—our ability to be liked. Coach JOE has another successful year at V. H.S. Athletics Northern Divisional Champions Standing: B. Norsby, W. White, B. Ginter. The Vallier High Panthers finished a perfect football season, winning all their games and thus being crowned Champions of the Northern Division. The 1953 squad displayed a great deal of teamwork as well as several fine individual players. The Panthers had a squad consisting of seventeen talented boys working together with sportsmanship and citizenship to bring a championship team to reality. The squad, having a new turf and an excellent coach in Joe Lindgren, can be duly proud of their accomplishments. At a Valier Community Club banquet in their honor Rex Dally, executive secretary of the Montana Athletic Association, presented silver footballs to Dewey Swank, Vern Monroe, Butch Lauffer, Herb Kuka, Russ Aiken, Greg Bowman, Vern Kuka, Bob Krattiger, Del Christiaens, Dick DeBoo, Dean Swank, Dale Dean, Dale Arnst, Bob Palin, Bill Ginter, Marvin White, and Bob Norsby, Mgr. The team had marvelous depth, and anyone of the players could be relied on to play well at any time. This, plus team work and a tremendous will to win, could add up only to a good record. There were eight seniors on the squad. Kay Mallette gained state wide recognition for his scoring abilities. Bob Palin was the rebound power and played well at forward, with Marvin White, an aggressive defensive man. Dale Dean and Dean Swank held down the guard positions. Bill Ginter, Dale Arnst, and Bob Wentworth were the other seniors on the team. Del Christiaens, Herb Kuka and Russ Aiken represented the only underclassmen on the A” squad. The Panthers won the district tournament after taking two hectic games in the last seconds b.y one point. Del Christiaens managed to dump in the winning basket in the nick of time both nights. They are now advancing to the Divisional Tournament at Lewistown. Our Panthers did themselves proud this year on the fields of athletic competition capturing as many trophies as was possible. They began by smashing all competition in football and then proceeded to do likewise in basketball, winning the district title and then moving into the divisional tourney at Lewistown. In the divisional competition Valier won three straight games gaining first place and the right to go to the state tournament at Livingston. Havre Central also went to state as runner-up in the Northern Division. At Livingston they came up with two wins pitted against as many defeats to take fourth place. Kay Mallette and Bob Palin were chosen for the all-state team picked by the coaches at the State meet. The Panthers’ good fortune, they feel, can be credited to many things but mainly good coaching and rabid support from the fans of Valier. All of the tournament games were broadcast either by business firms or by everyone in town chipping in to pay. The record of these teams is an admirable one, and one of which everyone can be justly proud.
