Text from Pages 1 - 56 of the 1953 volume:

TO YOU, MR. LINDAHL We, the Class of 1953, proudly dedicate our yearbook to Mr. Dean Lindahl, who has been our class sponsor for two years and whose familiar, A word to the wiseis sufficient, warned us of a coming test. He taught us accuracy and helped us maintain high standards. He instilled in us a true respect for scholarship. To Mr. Lindahl we express our appreciation for making our last two years of high school the most enjoyable of our school life. Superintendent GLENN BELISLE Coach JOE LINDGREN History, Biology VIRGIL FAULKNER Music, Speech DON FREEBURY Vocational Agriculture DEAN LINDAHL Mathematics, Chemistry GLENN HOUGHTON Commercial, Piano FACULTY MRS. POOLE (Pictured in Home Economics Section) We, the Class of 53 , chose wheat as the theme for our yearbook because wheat is often uppermost in thought and planning in our community. We chose this theme because nearly every member of our class and every student in Valier high school and every citizen of the Valier community depends directly or indirectly on wheat for his livlihood. Every direction in which a student gazes during a daydream reveals acres and acres of golden wheat alternated by the rich brown of the summer fallow. On a clear Indian summer day we can hear the roar of the combines as they make their rounds harvesting the foodstuff that Valier contributes to feed the hungry world. IN MEMORIAM In loving memory of Nick Pfeiffer, who died June 14, when he jumped from a moving truck and fell beneath the rear wheels. A twinkle in his eyes and prank in mind best describes Nick. Loved and respected by all, he faithfully performed his duties as manager of the football team. His excellent drawings for THE PANTHER brought praise from the M.I.E.A. Editor'1. The team began rather shakily and lost the first three games, but grew better as the season wore on and won the last four games of the schedule. The entire team will be playing again next year, as no men were lost to graduation. MUSIC The music department has grown considerably in the past two years with the addition of two new bass horns, alto and bass clarinets, with the filling out of other sections in the band, and with twenty new voices in the chorus. The band, chorus, and twirlers have made trips to Havre, Fairfield, Fort Benton, and Missoula in the past two years. Under the direction of Virgil Faulkner, the music department has become the largest voluntary participating organization in the school. Because of the added interest in both band and chorus, the quality of musicianship has reached an excellence never before attained in Valier Schools. In the soil profile they are looking for color, texture, structure, and depth of each soil horizon. These factors aid in determining soil productivity, crop types, and erosion factors. The picture to the right tells much the same story as the one above, except it is on dry land. Not shown on this page, but an interesting trip, was a field trip on Bang's disease. Bang's or Brucellosis, may be contacted by humans as undulant fever. The Bang's trip consisted of blood testing cows and vaccinating calves. The picture on left is of the Vo. Ag. class taking a day to caponize a group of roosters. The caponizing they are practicing is done by injecting Diethylstilbesterol under the skin in the neck, just behind the head. The compound counteracts the male harmones in a rooster and produces a capon. Every member of the class injected a bird, and at the moment Ed K. is wondering if he is going to hurt his little pet rooster. This won't hurt him, Ed. ■r Mrs. Poole Offers Guidance to Future Homemakers First table: S. Bruner, M. Christiaens, P. Ferguson, V. Ihnen, Mrs. Poole, B. Orr. Second table: R. Mozer, S. Sporleder, E. It has striven to encourage the students to be better citizens, to make more interesting copy, and to give everyone an opportunity to be included in the production of THE PANTHER. PROPHECY In the year 1973 we find the twelve members of the class of 53 gathered around a large banquet table in one of New York’s swankiest night clubs. We find that Carol Wall is the speaker of the evening. Carol is not only Editor of the New York Times , but is mayor of the gigantic city. She plans to run for president on the prohibition ticket in the next election. Miss Zelda Meeks, covered with diamonds, now owns the largest Buick agency in the U. S., and she plans on marrying soon if she can just find one she wants to settle down with. Dick Palin and his wife, the former Irene Grams, are one of America's wealthiest families. Dick is the nation’s leading architect. He claims his success is due to Irene's wonderful landscaping plans. Next we find Alfred Keeler, who is the National Advisor of the FFA. Alfred and his thirteen sons (all FFA members) are running a three thousand acre wheat ranch south of Valier. Shirley Van De Kop (Shirley Russell) is still living in San Diego, as Albert is not yet out of the Navy. At the foot of the table we find Joe Kuka, who has made a million with his amusement park at Dupuyer. Mr. and Mrs. Ron Christiaens (Patti Johnson) and Mr. and Mrs. Del Christiaens (Sherrill Ruehlman) are living on the old homestead east of Valier. Albert Trafelet runs a large garage and used car lot at Dupuyer. Whether you want a 1914 Ford or a 72 Cadillac, Albert will be able to provide it. Jean Norsby, Miss America of 1958, is now one of Hollywood’s leading stars. It is rumored that she makes frequent trips back to Valier to visit with her old friends Marvin White and Chuck Smith. Last, but not least, we find Corney Barendsen. Corney now heads Mayo Clinic and has made a fortune separating Simese twins. Class Colors: Blue and Silver Class Rower: Yellow Rose LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT We, the senior class of the city of Valier in the county of Pondera and the state of Montana, being of sound body and mind, do make and publish this our last will and testament. To the faculty we leave all the knowledge they could not cram into our heads, as we think it to be of little value. This knowledge may be passed on to the Juniors if they so wish it. To the Janitors we leave our immortal works of art carved upon every desk and blackboard. To the Juniors we leave absolutely nothing, as they are said to have everything. To the sophomores we leave our sophisticated ways. To the Freshman we leave our ability to get along with the faculty. To Jere Walley, Dick Palin leaves his pull with Mr. Lindahl. Albert Trafelet wills his quiet, mannerly ways to Ira Graham in hopes that he will apply them. Alfred Keeler bequeaths to his younger brothers his position in the FFA. Corney Barendsen leaves his place on the honor roll to Keith Pfeiffer. Patti Johnson wills to John Freeman her vim and vigor, Irene Grams leaves with Dick. joe Kuka bequeaths his corner in the library to anyone who will make good use of it. Jean Norsby leaves Marvin White and Chuck Smith, for she can't take them with her. To Corky Ames, Zelda Meeks wills her ambition. To the freshman girls, Sherrill leaves Del. Carol Wall bequeaths her quiet, lady-like manners to Pat Chausse. Shirley Russell leaves for California, so she can be with a certain sailor. We, the mighty Seniors, leave no stone unturned. In witness whereof. We, the class of 1953, set our hands and seal this twenty-sixth day of May, Anno Domini, one thousand nine hundred and fifty-three.
