IN THE SWIRLING MISTS AND QOH FIRE OF CREATION . . Qlivql .qw In the swirling mists and fire of creation, the gods and giants battled for the world. The giants were conquered and Odin with his many sons became king over all gods, who ruled heaven and earth. Odin traded his left eye to IVlimir, the old guardian of the well of wisdom, for a drink from the well. This gave him the foresight and wisdom to rule over all creation. I One son of Odin's, Heimdal, was set at the rainbow bridge as watchman over the entrance to Asgard, Kingdom of the gods. Another son was Baldur, who with his golden hair and calm manner was the most loved of all the gods. He was the god of peace and light. But it was Sol in his charlot who actually pulled the sun across the sky each day. His third son was Thor, who in his sparking chariot drawn by two wild goats, caused the thunder to rumble and the clouds to burst I into lightning. At sea however, it was the angry Midgard Serpent who created the rough and stormy waters. Tyr, also Odin's son, was the god of war and battle. He watched and decided who would claim victory in the fierce Norse battles. The Valkaries, in their flowing gowns, descended upon the battles on horseback, on land or at sea, and gathered the bravest warriors who had been killed. They were taken to Valhalla, in the kingdom of the gods, where there was great feasting and en- lightenment. Wk fi . QQQNEQ T0 QD j K. I J UOKLX bi .X , yr X X 'st 5 X N .
