Gold, jewels, money, wealth are treasures all of us have dreamed ahout at one time or another. However, these treasures can he illusive and not always lasting. Depressions, financial reverses and illness can wipe out material wealth overnight. The more important treasures are those that we work to develop within ourselves and our rela' tionships with others. Learning to think, honesty with oneself and with others, the ahility to assume responsihility, respect for the rights of others and the lasting friendships we have formed are, I think, a few of the treasures that we can keep alwayf- treasures that seem to increase with time-treasures that won't disappear overnight. The first lfig upset of the year came at the Huntington Beach Tournament when the Tigers turned the tahles to defeat the team from Excelsior. But. the experts still continued to pick the team as the cellar favorite . As the League opened and the Tigers started to show their strength, it was evident that this team would he strong contenders for top league. just to show this strength, the Tigers took a weekend trip to Avalon and handed the Islanders a heating such as few teams could do, with a final score of 74 points against Avalon's mere 41. The Tigers continued to win and when the League ended. our team was among the top three in our League. But. this wasn't the top hy any means. The Valencia squad finished the season with a history making event. the heating of the Alumni with a score of if to 50. Team captain for this year was Vincent Stork Hernandez, ll if C-36 CZCU44 Our Bee Baskethall team. though it lacked height, played fast, hard games this year. The height which it lacked. was made up in speed. spirit, and ahility. No matter what the score, the hoys didnt give up. They went right ahead and did their very hest. These smaller hoys. with their fine team spirit and attitude, inspired the Varsity to play much hetter hall, and it was a thrill to Valencia to see how the two teams suppnrted each other in competition. The credit for this goes to the fact that the School District put in a track which has for the past three years huilt up our track team until this year a peak was reached, As a result, thc records fell like rain. Gary Shinkle led with five hroken records and several more were hroken hy hoys in all three divisions. The track term had a very gfaod schedule with the Huittingfton Beach Southern Counties Meet. the Santa Ana Relays. and the Santa Barhara Easter Relays, tv name only a few of the outstandf ing meets in which our team partif cipated. The Cee team captured the League meet. while the Bees ran away with the Novice. There was a new meet intro- duced to the Orange League this year. This meet is a miniature de' Cathlon. and is called the Pen' tathlon. At this meet the Varsity placed two men. the Beef placed one, and the Cees two, This en' ahled the Tigers to walk away with the Sweepstakes award. There were several men iroin this year's team coinpeting in th: CTF. event.
