U yr TABLE OF CONTENTS INTRODUCTION ADMINISTRATION STUDENT LIFE ORGANIZATIONS SPECIAL EVENTS CLASSES SPORTS SUPERLATIVES ADVERTISEMENTS FRO THE EDITOR The aim of the SANDSPUR staff of 1959- 1960 was to produce a yearbook worthy of Valdosta High School and to relate memorable stories of our year at VHS. ln this nineteenth volume have been incorporated many new fea- tures designed to make our SANDSPUR more enjoyable and entertaining. Perhaps the most striking innovation is the color end sheets, featuring a scene which de- picts the Valdosta High School football spirit. Also, for the first time freshmen, sophomores, and faculty members were allowed individual pictures. Much time and effort were required to produce more vivid faculty and class sec- tions. The organizations, too, caught the lime- light this year. Each organization was cap- tured while engaged in its significant activities with the typical VHS students doing their share to make the organization outstanding at uDosta Hi 9, This yearbook could not have been produced without the help of the student body, the fac- ulty, and a wonderful staff. My grateful thanks go to all these people. Another milestone has been reached with the presentation of this pictorial annual. For the juniors, sophomores, and freshmen this book will record a year of fun and hard work. For the seniors the SANDSPUR will be, in addition, a storehouse of fond memories to be opened on a rainy night or laughed over with old friends. We, the staff, sincerely hope that each of you enjoys every page of this, your 1960 SANDSPUR. Editor MRS. H. A. HAMILL Because you love each one of us sincerely, and because you, with your inspiring Christian witness, have silently guided us many times along the road of life, we, the seniors, dedicate this, the 1960 SAND- SPUR, to you, our teacher and friend, lVlrs. Designed to equip the college hound student with a strong foundation in all courses is the College Preparatory Course. The requirements oftthis course enable the student to meet the en- trance requirements of the majority of colleges. The primary purpose of the General Course is to give the non-college student a well-rounded education in a variety of subjects. ' The student who is planning to begin Work after completing his high school education may choose to follow any one of four programs of study. These courses are the Commercial Course, the Distributive Education Course, the Trade and Industrial Education Course, and the Diversified Cooperative Training Course. Much has heen 1'0lll1'llJl1lCd to the advancement of the cui'1'iculun1 hy these departments. For example, the English Department has decided lo let certain phases of English he stressed dur- ing definite grades. American Litemture and the parts of speech are accented during the junior year while English l..llCI'illll1'C and sen- tence 5tl'lICllll'6 are primary goals of the senior tezichers. Other departnients are active in outlining and planning at thorough curriculum. The Sci- ence Department is making progress in this manner. The lmiology course has heen divided into two classifications-geneml and college pre1u1rutoi'y. The college p1'epa1'atoi'y class does more extensive study in the human lrody and has it greater amount of time spent in the lah. Through this department Mental Maturity tests are given to ninth and eleventh graders. Numerous other tests are given to learn the achievements of students in various courses, the interests and aptitudes of the students. Editor SANDSPUR Have you bought your annual yet?,, was a familiar question around V.H.S. the Week the Sand- spur initiated its campaign of selling a quota of yearbooks. By appointing homeroom representatives, the staff was successful in its drive. In planning the 1959-1960 SANDSPUR, the staff decided upon many improvements and the need for added attractions. The class section, with its many rows of individual pictures, was carefully drawn up. The faculty and academic shots were covered. All organizations were required to sub- mit a brief summary of their activities to the SANDSPUR. Ads were sold to many businessmen, which was in itself a big job. The special events editor snapped pictures at just the right moment to catch the true meaning of the events. Picture after picture of football, basketball, and track was taken. Work, work, work is the SANDSPUR's motto, and the staff sincerely hopes this year's annual is to the students, one of the best in the history of Valdosta High School. The Student Council is the club to thank for this activity. Identification cards sold to the students was another project sponsored by this organization. The purchasing of these cards was necessary before students were allowed to sit in the student section at football games. Being the connecting link between the students and the faculty by presenting the ideas and views of both, this club is an asset to the school. Members are elected by the student body with two rep- resentatives selected from the freshman and sophomore classes and four from the junior and senior classes. 1 I Lizzie Helms 1 fr President 3 HN' KN Betty .lo Greene A L , , .- '. 1 f f ? GOERMETCLB As students attended Tri-Hi-Y Youth Assemblies in Atlanta a few years ago, they had a desire to know more about the parliamentary procedure, which they had witnessed there. As a result of this new' interest, the Government Club of V.H.S. was formed. The club clearly demonstrated the need for cooperation of clubs in a high school when they sponsored a dance with the Key Club. Their far-reaching promotions have influenced the entire student body.
