Coming at the half- turn of the 20th century, the 1950 SANDSPUR adopted a golden cover because Cold symbolizes 50th anniversaries. The SANDSPUR staff strove to complete a yearbook that you would cherish for years to come. When you first open this book, do not judge the product of our labors too harshly. Wait until many years have gone by and then again turn these pages and decide whether or not it is truly a Book of Colden Memories. This year the organi zation appeared at the home football games and attended all of the out-of- town games, in addition to being active in civic performances. The members who attended the band clinic in Doug- las came back to Valdosta greatly in- spired over their experiences and full of plans for the contest to be nela in Brunswick in March. Among the most outstanding places the band has visited are: the ’Gator Bowl in Jacksonville. Fla , the Gasparilla in Tampa. Fla . and the Watermelon Festival in Leesburg. Fla. In 1949 all hope as a head drum majorette was gone until Mr. Sturchio came as Director of the Band and selected her head drum majorette from the senior group At one of the football games she became so confused that the Band was going one way and she was going the other way, for your benefit though, it was just an act that she was putting on. Starters THE CEIS 01 THE Hlllim AARON ALDERMAN—Co-captain of the team was a very good leader, a real hustler and a good blocker and tackier. He was named on the All-Region team PETE SMITH—Because he showed great ability to stop the offense and open up holes for the backs, he was given the name Fire Plug. He made All- Region. HARRIS GREENE—Here is a first year man who turned out to be a very hard man to play against because he was one of the hardest tacklers on the team. RAYMOND FRANKLIN—Played tackle He made second team All-Region. JACK SMITH—Was a very good end on both defense and offense. He battled hard and few got around this lad without a tug-of-war ARCHIE GRIFFIN—Was about the best pass receiver on the team and was noted for his ability to call plays, kick and run with the ball and made All-Region and all opponent at end. BILLY WATSON—Was a very hard running fullback and a tough one, too. Toward the end of the season, he had the misfortune to break his hand. GLENN DOWLING—Co-captain, proved to be a good runner and a pass receiver BILL LAITE—Played guard for three years and was a good blocker. JAKE FLEMING—Was a hard running back who looked like a cater- pillar tank when he got started through the line. RAYMOND BURKETT—One of the best tackles in the state, made All-Region and all opponent, because of his outstanding blocking and tackling. FRANKLIN SINGLETARY—Shifted from quarterback to halfback and was a good passer. He made All-Region JACK TILLMAN—Played good, smart football. He made a good defensive back.
