ay Sherk History of whe Weldon: Sale By A. GRILL In 1893 school was being held ina rough lumber one-room cabin im-’ mediately on the north side of Bol- linger Chapel and was opened inter- mittently when the County had a little fund to spare. P. A. Bollinger, W.K. Powell, and John Refour com- posed the local school board. For several years until 1905, there was also school in town located in the old Colony store building that was used for church services. The teachers were paid by The Woman’s Board of Home Missions of the Presbyterian Church of the U. S..A., but on De- cember 27 of that year, the county bought a piece of property from the Waldensian Church and built a two- roomed frame house. As John Refour building the Board was composed of J..M. Brinkley, L. P. Guigou, and A. Grill. In 1935 the Board was aug- -mented to five by the appointments resigned from the board, A. Grill was appointed in his place in 1909. Three years later two rooms were added, but there were no desks and no chairs for the teachers. Superin- tendent Thomas Sigmon said, “If you raise one half of the cost to buy these, I will put up the other half.” One half was raised by collection. In 1923 there were six rooms, but the building was a regular fire trap with only flues from the ceiling up. Loafers were breaking in especially on week-ends, and on Monday morning, every stove had to be put up again so they could be used. At that time, during Miss Buena Laxton’s principalship, P. A. Bollinger and W. K. Powell resign- ed. James Powell and Francis Garrou were appointed on the Board. When James Powell resigned, J. M. Brink- ley was appointed, and when Francis Garrou resigned, L. P. Guigou was appointed; so when it was decided to build the present Elementary school of M. H. Rutherford and Edward Micol. When Mr. Micol resigned to run for County Commissioner, Henry Grill was appointed to replace him, and in 1944 when J. M. Brinkley died, C. C. Long was appointed to take his place; so at the present time the Board is composed of A. Grill, L. P. Guigou, M.,H. Rutherford, Henry GrillandsC Ga lonc™ Professor R. L. Patton 1s County Superintendent, and George D. Car- penter has been appointed on the County Board of Education at the res- ignation of Earl B. Searcy. The County Schools in the town of Valdese opened east of the Wal- densian Church in 1905 with two rooms and two teachers until 1909. In 1937 a building to house the high school was erected and dedicated to Francis Garrou. There are thirty-two teachers now. A new Home Economic building has been erected just back of the high school building. ‘ee Sees
