Foreword oreWwor In hopes that we may show the immense prog- ress of the Valdese High School Unit and that we may be inspired to press on to higher goals, we, the Beta Club of the Valdese High School, publish this 1948 volume of the Impersonator. To Mrs. Dell B. Wilson, who through her faith in us has caused us to believe in ourselves and who has inspired us to begin our journey on the road that leads to success and happiness, we, the students of the Valdese High School, dedicate the ninth volume of the 1948 Impersonator. Repti ay Sherk History of whe Weldon: Sale By A. GRILL In 1893 school was being held ina rough lumber one-room cabin im-’ mediately on the north side of Bol- linger Chapel and was opened inter- mittently when the County had a little fund to spare. P. A. Bollinger, W.K. Powell, and John Refour com- posed the local school board. For several years until 1905, there was also school in town located in the old Colony store building that was used for church services. The teachers were paid by The Woman’s Board of Home Missions of the Presbyterian Church of the U. S..A., but on De- cember 27 of that year, the county bought a piece of property from the Waldensian Church and built a two- roomed frame house. As John Refour building the Board was composed of J..M. Brinkley, L. P. Guigou, and A. Grill. In 1935 the Board was aug- -mented to five by the appointments resigned from the board, A. Grill was appointed in his place in 1909. Three years later two rooms were added, but there were no desks and no chairs for the teachers. Superin- tendent Thomas Sigmon said, “If you raise one half of the cost to buy these, I will put up the other half.” One half was raised by collection. In 1923 there were six rooms, but the building was a regular fire trap with only flues from the ceiling up. Loafers were breaking in especially on week-ends, and on Monday morning, every stove had to be put up again so they could be used. At that time, during Miss Buena Laxton’s principalship, P. A. Bollinger and W. K. Powell resign- ed. James Powell and Francis Garrou were appointed on the Board. When James Powell resigned, J. M. Brink- ley was appointed, and when Francis Garrou resigned, L. P. Guigou was appointed; so when it was decided to build the present Elementary school of M. H. Rutherford and Edward Micol. When Mr. Micol resigned to run for County Commissioner, Henry Grill was appointed to replace him, and in 1944 when J. M. Brinkley died, C. C. Long was appointed to take his place; so at the present time the Board is composed of A. Grill, L. P. Guigou, M.,H. Rutherford, Henry GrillandsC Ga lonc™ Professor R. L. Patton 1s County Superintendent, and George D. Car- penter has been appointed on the County Board of Education at the res- ignation of Earl B. Searcy. The County Schools in the town of Valdese opened east of the Wal- densian Church in 1905 with two rooms and two teachers until 1909. In 1937 a building to house the high school was erected and dedicated to Francis Garrou. There are thirty-two teachers now. A new Home Economic building has been erected just back of the high school building. ‘ee Sees om Mr. BURTON BARGER Lenoir Rhyne College, N. C., A.B. The subject found to be most difficult was Algebra. Our principal was Mtr. Stemple and our teachers were: Miss Ghigo, Mrs. Braswell, Mr. Cotton, Mrs. Wagstaff, and Mrs. Ellison. In our sophomore year we were more confident because we had ad- justed ourselves to the way of high school life. We had Miss Pyatt to re- place Mrs. Wagstaff. Mr. Sorrell was our coach. Algebra was as difficult as the year before and Biology was none too easy. The teachers were: Mr. Cot- ton, Algebra; Mrs. Braswell, Eng- lish; Mrs. Ellison, Home Economics; Miss Ghigo, History; and Mr. Stemple, Biology. We were very sorry to hear that Mr. Stemple, Mrs. Bras- well and Mrs. Ellison were leaving. We were going to miss them very much. The junior year was a very excit- ing One since we were sponsoring the Junior-Senior banquet. We had many new teachers. Mr. Spainhour was our principal this year. Miss Goins took over the home economics depart- ment. Miss Hardin taught English for half the year and Mr. LaFevers 217 + the other half. Mr. Clayton was his- tory teacher for part of the year and Miss Cline replaced him the latter part of the year. Mr. Clayton was al- so our coach. The guidance depart- ment, a new and helpful thing to Valdese High, was under the direc- tion of Mrs. Dell B. Wilson. Many students started in their first year French and found this an interesting subject. Miss Pyatt started some stu- dents in their first year typing. So all in all we had a very pleasant year. Finally the year we have been wait- ing for has arrived. We are now dig- nified seniors, the title we have been striving for since the first day we en- tered high school. Some new teachers have joined the faculty and they are: Mr. Rowe, commerce; Mrs. Miller, Science; and Mr. Barger, coach. Honeycutt, principal; Mrs. There are fifty-three members and one post-graduate in the class. We now have the future ahead of us. May it be a bright, happy one, free of wars and misery. We have learned much, and yet each year as we ac- quired more knowledge, there seem- ed to be more and more to learn. May we realize that one never really stops learning, and may each of us have always the desire to learn more. By Jeanette Dippman Class Historian enwor .
