Ringggg!!! “LOOK HOMEWARD. ANGEL , on to English! The English curriculum at Vailsburg High always has been one of my favorites. It is enriched by a wide selection of academic courses, as well as an abundance of extra-curricular activities. Every year a wide range of trips is planned to many Broadway productions. 'Phis year, we went to see “Annie”, “Dracula , “The King and I , For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow is Enuf , to mention a few. ■ Since freshman year. I have been a member of the Drama Club, which annually presents a variety of one-act plays and a senior show, including this year’s production of A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum . It also provides students with lessons in acting, speech, and improvisation techniques. In the journalism creative writing class, students who demonstrate a “nose for news are able to do actual newswriting for a local newspaper, as well as write poetry and short stories for a literary magazine which is published annually. In the film production class, students attempt to produce their own original films and visualize an array of film classics. For the advanced students, classes are available in Honors’ English I, II, III. and IV in which they work at a more rapid pace and read approximately thirty-five well-known works of literature. The verbal skills class provides college-bound students with in-depth studies of the English language to improve their college test scores. At the conclusion of the students’ four years at Vailsburg. the English Department presents an award to the senior who has presented a true appreciation and admiration for the English language and its many facets. 13

This yearbook is an invitation to a unique journey—through a day in the life of a high school student. Join us in visiting each class in the schedule of a typical student at Vaiisburg High. Share his conquests, failures, and acquaintances. Retrace his path, along with those of the students he represents. . . He entered into foreign realms as a wandering child—headstrong, motivated, and highly idealistic. As a freshman, he remained oblivious to the school’s shortcomings. Gradually he became disillusioned by daily occurrences. He relented to the education of acceptance. The past is soon dismissed: present day replaces it. Today’s student is self-sufficient, scheduled to leave a structure which is all too familiar to him now. To him, education assumes a broader definition: discovery, despite all obstacles. I he individual emerges; he is either indifferent or devoted. The latter student has by now developed enough sense to distinguish between teachers and educators; the former cannot recognize himself. The outlook for tomorrow’s student contains no immediate answers or promises. The future of this student cannot be assured if his present foundations are unsteady. By the words of James Russell Lowell, The better part of every man’s education is that which he gives himself.” Only through discipline, diligence, and dedication, can today’s student become a permanent inheritor of knowledge. In composing this yearbook, we are indebted to the power of expression, which has enabled us to successfully capture our own images and creatively record them. Each page constitutes more than one scene in time; it embraces the essence of four years spent at Vaiisburg High. To all.we hope this yearbook remains a permanent experience of hope, remembrance, and incentive to lifelong learning. f%ALAfajyiL Christine Dawydiak H.R.
