Mr. John L. Petitti (Principal) After I sneak into the building past the security guard. I immediately have to tiptoe past the administration office ’cause I forgot my I.D. card. Presently, John L. Petitti is principal at VaiUburg High School. He is the over-all conductor of all school affairs, academic, as well as social. Throughout the school year. Mr. Petitti must cope with the problems confronted by the school and its students. He must make important, sometimes drastic, decisions in order to maintain an atmosphere of order and respectability, along with a suitable environment for learning. Often, these decisions are not met with the approval of the students, but as an experienced individual, he attempts to please everyone involved. Mr. Petitti. a friendly and reasonable man. acts faithfully to the call of duty and proves to be a preferable choice to head the administration at Vailsburg High School. To aid him in his many endeavors. Mr. Petitti has two responsible men assisting him in school matters. Mr. Michael Mirabella often acts as his backhand in disciplinary problems. When a student is reprimanded for a wrong-doing, Mr. Mirabella often sees to it that the pupil obtains a justifiable and fair punishment. Dr. Elias Levinson, on the other hand, is in charge of the scheduling of all the students at Vailsburg. He attempts to correct faulty schedules and provides the students with courses which will prove to be most beneficial and educationally stimulating. Throughout the school term, these three gentlemen provided the school with basic, but essential, services and excell in making Vailsburg High School a more interesting and pleasant environment for education and high school activities. 10

This yearbook is an invitation to a unique journey—through a day in the life of a high school student. Join us in visiting each class in the schedule of a typical student at Vaiisburg High. Share his conquests, failures, and acquaintances. Retrace his path, along with those of the students he represents. . . He entered into foreign realms as a wandering child—headstrong, motivated, and highly idealistic. As a freshman, he remained oblivious to the school’s shortcomings. Gradually he became disillusioned by daily occurrences. He relented to the education of acceptance. The past is soon dismissed: present day replaces it. Today’s student is self-sufficient, scheduled to leave a structure which is all too familiar to him now. To him, education assumes a broader definition: discovery, despite all obstacles. I he individual emerges; he is either indifferent or devoted. The latter student has by now developed enough sense to distinguish between teachers and educators; the former cannot recognize himself. The outlook for tomorrow’s student contains no immediate answers or promises. The future of this student cannot be assured if his present foundations are unsteady. By the words of James Russell Lowell, The better part of every man’s education is that which he gives himself.” Only through discipline, diligence, and dedication, can today’s student become a permanent inheritor of knowledge. In composing this yearbook, we are indebted to the power of expression, which has enabled us to successfully capture our own images and creatively record them. Each page constitutes more than one scene in time; it embraces the essence of four years spent at Vaiisburg High. To all.we hope this yearbook remains a permanent experience of hope, remembrance, and incentive to lifelong learning. f%ALAfajyiL Christine Dawydiak H.R.
