I immediately have to tiptoe past the administration office ’cause I forgot my I.D. card. Presently, John L. Petitti is principal at VaiUburg High School. He is the over-all conductor of all school affairs, academic, as well as social. Throughout the school year. Mr. Petitti must cope with the problems confronted by the school and its students. He must make important, sometimes drastic, decisions in order to maintain an atmosphere of order and respectability, along with a suitable environment for learning. Often, these decisions are not met with the approval of the students, but as an experienced individual, he attempts to please everyone involved. Mr. Petitti. a friendly and reasonable man. acts faithfully to the call of duty and proves to be a preferable choice to head the administration at Vailsburg High School. To aid him in his many endeavors. Mr. Petitti has two responsible men assisting him in school matters. Mr. Michael Mirabella often acts as his backhand in disciplinary problems. When a student is reprimanded for a wrong-doing, Mr. Mirabella often sees to it that the pupil obtains a justifiable and fair punishment. Dr. Elias Levinson, on the other hand, is in charge of the scheduling of all the students at Vailsburg. He attempts to correct faulty schedules and provides the students with courses which will prove to be most beneficial and educationally stimulating. Throughout the school term, these three gentlemen provided the school with basic, but essential, services and excell in making Vailsburg High School a more interesting and pleasant environment for education and high school activities. 10 n Dr. Elias Levinson (Vice-Principal) SITTING: Elisa Puzzuoli (Co-Editor). .James Rau, Jan Melchionno (Advisor), Christine Dawydiak (Co-Editor). This yearbook is an invitation to a unique journey—through a day in the life of a high school student. Join us in visiting each class in the schedule of a typical student at Vaiisburg High. Share his conquests, failures, and acquaintances. Retrace his path, along with those of the students he represents. . . He entered into foreign realms as a wandering child—headstrong, motivated, and highly idealistic. As a freshman, he remained oblivious to the school’s shortcomings. Gradually he became disillusioned by daily occurrences. He relented to the education of acceptance. The past is soon dismissed: present day replaces it. Today’s student is self-sufficient, scheduled to leave a structure which is all too familiar to him now. To him, education assumes a broader definition: discovery, despite all obstacles. I he individual emerges; he is either indifferent or devoted. The latter student has by now developed enough sense to distinguish between teachers and educators; the former cannot recognize himself. The outlook for tomorrow’s student contains no immediate answers or promises. The future of this student cannot be assured if his present foundations are unsteady. By the words of James Russell Lowell, The better part of every man’s education is that which he gives himself.” Only through discipline, diligence, and dedication, can today’s student become a permanent inheritor of knowledge. In composing this yearbook, we are indebted to the power of expression, which has enabled us to successfully capture our own images and creatively record them. Each page constitutes more than one scene in time; it embraces the essence of four years spent at Vaiisburg High. To all.we hope this yearbook remains a permanent experience of hope, remembrance, and incentive to lifelong learning. f%ALAfajyiL Christine Dawydiak H.R. J. Ringggg!!! “LOOK HOMEWARD. ANGEL , on to English! The English curriculum at Vailsburg High always has been one of my favorites. It is enriched by a wide selection of academic courses, as well as an abundance of extra-curricular activities. Every year a wide range of trips is planned to many Broadway productions. 'Phis year, we went to see “Annie”, “Dracula , “The King and I , For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow is Enuf , to mention a few. ■ Since freshman year. I have been a member of the Drama Club, which annually presents a variety of one-act plays and a senior show, including this year’s production of A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum . It also provides students with lessons in acting, speech, and improvisation techniques. In the journalism creative writing class, students who demonstrate a “nose for news are able to do actual newswriting for a local newspaper, as well as write poetry and short stories for a literary magazine which is published annually. In the film production class, students attempt to produce their own original films and visualize an array of film classics. For the advanced students, classes are available in Honors’ English I, II, III. and IV in which they work at a more rapid pace and read approximately thirty-five well-known works of literature. The verbal skills class provides college-bound students with in-depth studies of the English language to improve their college test scores. At the conclusion of the students’ four years at Vailsburg. the English Department presents an award to the senior who has presented a true appreciation and admiration for the English language and its many facets. 13 Ms. Jan Melchionno “ALIENATIO]'' 16 Mrs. Rose Trawick Mr. John Cafone Mr. Joseph Russo “F TO THE THIRD POWER” AND LONELINESS” Ms. Vickie Dinkins Ms. Barbara Rick “Boy , last period was really exciting. I really got interested in the topic of discussion. But now I must limber up my body in the gymnasium. I consider this period to be time for enjoyment, while at the same time my muscles are being toned and my reflexes are being sharpened. This department is equipped with the latest facilities to help a person develop good physical coordination. A large selection of apparatus, including rings, climbing ropes, mats, chin-up bars, parallel bars, horse vaults, along with an abundance of sporting equipment, such as volleyballs and nets, baseballs, mitts, and bats, and footballs, are all available for the students’ use. With the girls’ gym located on the first floor and the boys’ gym on the lower level, there is adequate space for all. The lower gym is also the ideal place for any school function. Courses in health, first aid, driver’s education, and planned parenthood are offered by the department, also. Throughout a student’s four years, he is able to learn the real definition for personality! 18 Mr. Joseph Raker (Acting Chairperson) STRIKE 1! STRIKE 2! I wonder if I should go to third period? The Stephan Crane Chapter of the National Honor Society is composed of those seniors who have maintained a grade point average of 3.2 or higher during their years at Vailsburg High School. Not only have they attained such scholastic achievement, but these honor students have met the high standards of scholarship, service, leadership, and character maintained by the chapters of the National Honor Society. The members have lived exemplary lives within the school and continue to he motivated by the challenging ideals of the Society. On the second Monday of the month, the National Honor Society meets with Mrs. Wells, the advisor. period two in the sewing room. They discuss future plans and projects that would render service to school and community. The induction ceremony was certainly a memorable event. As the lighted candle of knowledge luminously flickered, the master of ceremonies and the officers spoke of the ideals and principles of the National Honor Society. The climax of the evening was the recitation of the pledge as each new member held his lighted candle. Afterwards there was entertainment with musical selections performed by some of the members. Unfortunately, such academic accomplishments are sometimes overshadowed by the other extracurricular activities. The National Honor Society represents the championship of a school's most primary purpose—education. 22 First Row: Robert DeCagna, Betty Eng, Elisa Puzzuoli, Christine Dawydiak, Mary Alfano. Within the Business Department, there are many skilled teachers who prepare you thoroughly for the business world. The business course offers, stenography, typing, bookkeeping, accounting, and many other interesting classes. A student must work hard, but it is all well-worth it. You learn a skill, and then practice and improve it until you become successful. Secretaries and bookkeepers are always in great demand. And every day a job of this type can hold many challenges. In the secretarial practice class, a student learns how an office is run and the type of work that a secretary handles during a day. It also explains many of the problems a secretary may experience. At the end of each year awards are given to those students who have gone beyond the usual standards. There is also a Business Club operation at Vailsburg High School. The club consists of business teachers and students who plan many different field trips and hold parties for occasions held within the club. The bookkeeping and accounting classes offer a good education to every student. Here a student learns how to enter new accounts or creditors into a business, how to keep accurate records of a day's transactions, and how to evaluate a business’ income. This course is excellent for students who enjoy doing math and like the advantage of doing different and exciting work. The equipment used in the business classrooms are all up-to-date, modern machines. There are manual and electric typewriters available. Also, there are calculating machines for students interested in a class called Business Machines. SMIIIIU. Mjiiffl 29 Mrs. Penelope Vekiaris Mrs. Beverly Bradley Mr. Fred Engel T. I have been taking mathematics classes all four years at Vailsburg, and I have learned quite a bit from them. There is always so much knowledge to absorb that my mind gets boggled by all the data. Vailsburg High has always had a highly qualified staff of mathematics teachers. The subjects they teach range from math review to pre-college calculus. This year, with the arrival of a new department chairperson, the mathematics department teachers can continue to do the highly skilled job they have been doing for so many years. Though many instructors have come and gone and class sizes range according to subject, the math curriculum has always been an extremely busy and instructive one. Mrs. Emily Rogers 33 “REGURGITATE YOUR KNOWLEDGE” Mr. James Green 35 Mr. Joseph McHugh WHERE DID EVERYBODY Mr. Sol Stone Now is the period in which I have the opportunity to prove scientific theories and solve chemical equations.” It is time tor science. In my four years of high school I have taken science courses that range from the basics of the man-made world to the highly advanced science of physics. In between, I have acquired a strong foundation in biology and modern chemistry because of Vailsburgs’ excellent advanced placement program. I am positive these courses will give me substantial aid in college, should I decide to continue studying science. All the staff members in the Science Department are very capable of enriching minds with knowledge concerning our environment and the many wonders of science. Laboratory classes for chemistry and physics also enable me to handle very sophisticated equipment and experiment with the elements. Awards like the Bausch and Lomb Award and others are presented to those pupils who have shown a special interest and ability in mathematics and science. 37 38 Mr. Leslie Donaldson u meeeleeeleeeter, theee eeelec tj. Mr. Michael Eber (Chairperson) Mrs. Anne Murray Mr. Clifton C. Copper Mr. Thomas Kennedy No school can withstand its daily traffic without the presence of auxiliary services. Persons who compose this group, the cafeteria and custodial workers, direct their efforts at health and convenience for everyone who enters the school building. The custodial personnel accomplish a great deal in maintaining livable conditions in an over-populated environment. Because of their unending routines, and frequent restorations from emergencies, the continuation of their everyday roles lies in the laborers’ persistence. With all the unexpected circumstances they must face, custodians should be congratulated for their consistent performance. The cafeteria staff is important in shaping an aspect of the school’s non-academic facilities. Time spent in preparation, planning, and posting menus fills the cafeteria worker’s day. Confronted each day with long, impatient, lines of students, the cafeteria staff attempts to quickly and efficiently accomodate their lunchtime crowds. Both these services have been unwavering in executing their daily duties, and in sustaining their functions to the school. The walls are lined with cabinets of first aid supplies and the air is tinged with alcohol. However, this anxious wail is worth it; third period class is never too exciting. Throughout the year, the school nurses are largely occupied with the responsibilities of vaccinating each student who, by regulation, must receive all innoculalions to gain admittance to classes. Consequently, administering shots and tests for such diseases as tuberculosis, polio, diphtheria, and tetanus becomes a major function in the nurse’s daily routine. Prior to each season of sports, the health staff must contend with organizing physical examinations for each student who plans to participate in athletics. Compiling medical records is another duty of the school nurses. Throughout a student’s high school career, he will find himself in the nurses’s office at least once... For this reason, it seems unusual that I must face my fate alone today. Had I been in school yesterday, I could have had an entire class to reassure me that TB tests are not as awful as I thought. My turn is up. 1 enter the office, roll up my sleeve, close my eyes, and hope that someone will tell me when it’s all over. 44 Summoned from class by a blue slip, I am relieved of the painstaking task of inventing a new excuse for forgetting my assignment. Fortunately, the Guidance Department works in many ways. The guidance office is frequented by every student during his years at Vailsburg. The many duties of guidance counselors include compilation of schedules and resolution of students’ questions about courses of study. Counselors aim at directing a student’s program toward his future ambitions. Each guidance counselor also evaluates the progress of his students, maintains detailed files, and offers assistance to problems which arise during the student's year. Guidance aid becomes most extensive during a pupil’s senior year. At this time, counselors must plan cooperatively with students toward a college or career. Notifying students of college board deadlines, available scholarships, and suitable choices of colleges (along with completing college applications), are all functions of the guidance counselors. Many new opportunities have been granted students to experience college life. Guidance-sponsored trips have enabled pupils to attend college classes and to speak with members of the admissions office, faculty, and students. A major event presented by the Guidance Department this year was the New Jersey Colleges Night. In this program, students and their parents met college representatives and discussed the aspects of each institution. This year, Vailsburg High School welcomed a new counselor, Mrs. Kelly, to its guidance staff and extends wishes for her continued success in the future. With all these offered services, it is no surprise that the appointments with counselors never cease . . . neither does the class to which I have just returned. They know the school and are familiar with its daily events. They may become annoyed with the common disorders, but never are intimidated bv them; they brave all storms to provide relief. One will never see them idle; like the activity in the school, they are perpetually in motion. No two days are ever alike for them. Being prepared for any imaginable occurrence is the routine required of each for performance. Deviations from normalcy are too numerous to upset their trained assertiveness. Their faces are familiar to students, and students are accustomed to their presence. They become components of the school no less important to the school than the other groups which comprise it. Their domain is not large in area, but is filled to capacity with opportunities for exercising their abilities. They may experience satisfaction, disgust, joy, pain, friendship, and other conflicting attitudes in their positions. If they remain, they acquire a sense of belonging, an assurance that they are in the best situation to contribute their services, which constitutes the security guards’ world. 48 Anthony DiDomenico Not pictured: Wardell Mitchell William Kravit “There goes the bell. On to history! The History Department at Vailsburg is enriched with a wide selection of courses and a staff of well-prepared teachers. Through a period of four years, I have traveled back in time to the days of the Pilgrims in the accelerated subject of Honors U.S. History I and II. I, along with my classmates who have learned of our ancestors and their hardships through basic U.S. history classes, have moved on to other areas of the globe and its different ethnic groups. Afro-American History and Puerto Rican History have led us to a better understanding of two of the world’s greatest populations. We have captured a better vision of the universe’s most advanced planet through the study of world history. Many special programs are part of the History Department’s curriculum. Every year valuable educational field trips are planned to such enjoyable sites as the United Nations, the Museum of Natural History, and Wall Street. Classes partake of interesting endeavors such as compiling a history of ailsburg, investing in the stock market, and participating in essay contests. Through the use of modern maps, globes, and audio-visual equipment, the History Department has provided much more than its courses indicate. Within classes, sociology, geography, politics, religions, and a wide range of other topics are frequently discussed. A pupil’s significant progress and academic achievement in the field of history is measured in his senior year by a departmental award. 49 Ten-four, We have a Dow Jones Report. But I really do like languages (when I have my homework), and Vailsburg offers fine courses in Spanish, French and Italian. Over the years, students from this department have excelled in competition. French students have participated in the National French Contest and these have been some national winners! Yearly, students from all the language classes take part in the Seton Hall Modern Language Poetry Contest. Again, we have had first and second place winners. Periodically, the language department sponsors its own Language Poetry Festival. First-hand experiences in foreign countries have also been contributing factors in the students’ sucess. In recent years, staff members have accompanied student groups on trips to Italy, Spain, and France. A student interested in languages will find the sky is the limit in Vailsburg’s strong and independant language department. Now what am I to do? While in class, I can hear Vailsburg’s band practicing in the playground. As you know, Vailsburg's band won the city championship for 2 band. Our music department gives the students a chance to show off their talent and it also gives the student a chance to represent their school. Our Foods Department is becoming more popular every year. More young men are indulging in this course, which makes it more fun. I can just smell the lasagna baking and the Italian bread m-m-m-m. This department is wonderful for the teaching of both young men and women to prepare their own meals. Most likely, everybody will be out on his or her own someday. About two doors away, there is the sewing class. And all the young ladies are designing all different garments. You can hear the machines just whirring. The Sewing Department helps give the young women a chance to do something on their own. Our Sewing Department also offers an advanced class which consists of sewing and knitting. Up on the second floor there are the very talented, drawing fantastic portraits and sketches of all kinds. I must say these students can really move a pencil. Those students interested in architecture should take this course. It is very helpful. 57 Mr. Donald Bell A ONE .. A TWO ... To their injftinished the season with 9 wins and 6 •aulfprnd he declared that “Even though the ?st of luck in the future. 122 Better luck next year is all I can say for Vailsburg's Varsity Basketball Team. They closed the season with a 10-9 record. It is rather difficult to pin-point the reason for the team’s misfortune. Could it have been because the team was relatively inexperienced? Only five seniors were on the team. Could the new coach, Mr. Catalano, have any influence on the team even though he was easy to work with? Or maybe their competitors had something to do with it. Weequahic and West Side provided the hardest competition for our young men. Well, whatever the reason, all I can say is those are the breaks. That goes doubly for the girls’ basketball team. What can be said about a 1-12 record? It surely must have suffered. Even though the team was hard-working and followed the coaching of Mr. Creutzberger, it just could not shake off the strong Barringer team which was their greatest competition. Once again experience lacked. Of four seniors, only one was a veteran player. The team was a fresh one. Hopefully, the team will become better as time goes by. 125 James Catalano, coach Standing Left to Right: Gary Scott. Mike Spann, Anthony McGlone, Richard Jackson. Ron Simpson. Charles Foreman. One can pursue musical interests through the orchestra, senior string ensemble, concert band, jazz band, and chorus. Cultural customs thrive with Aspira and the Intercultural Club. There are clubs oriented towards certain occupational fields such as the Business Club and Future Physicians Club. Other groups attempt to solve contemporary problems. Such a group is the Drug Council. Then there are others that render service to the school and senior class-the Student Council, the Stage Crew, and the Senior Class officers and the Executive Board. These functions not only offer the individual new experiences and challenges through trips, presentations, contests, awards, shows, dances, but they enrich the school as well as instill pride. This year I am in the senior show. Imagine, my debut on stage! Mr. Cafone (who has a flair for the absurd) is directing the musical comedy “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum”. Although education takes place in the classroom, some of the most rewarding experiences (not to mention fun) during one’s high school years 153 BUSINESS CLUB SEATED: Denis Terhune, Sharon Harding (Treasurer).
