“If a man does not keep pace with his com- panions, perhaps it is because he hears a dif- ferent drummer. At first glimpse we behold an evoking smile—his nod seeking neither to justify nor condemn—shall bid us farewell. He does not labor to confine our thoughts, nor does he attempt to suppress their expression. He says much in silence; he is a good listener. The deathless enigma—allies for peace until we are torn by the capricious ness of this conquering hero. On a whim he decides whether you be friend or foe, and once he resumes his ardbus journey, he never stops to recall which he favored. .. when.. or why. We have all feared his sobriety—behind his back—and yet we still dared to laugh in his face [perhaps solely to conceal our dread. Lpon seeing this, the insidious figure turned away—his omniscient grin boasting of his omnipotence. Yes, his trickery has led many astray, but only in their failure to unveil the secret to his imposter's true identity lies his triumph. We feel his ubiquity; it abides in our souls. We may glance at his workings; they are engraved upon our memories. We may grasp his hand; he can lead us only so long as we will follow. It is to this Ruler of the past and Subject of the future that we, the graduating class of 1974, dedicate these—our echoing days... —Bonnie Ellen Sherbo vV JOHN L. IN REMEMBRANCE DERRYL FRAZIER (December 2, 1956-March 4, 1974) “Sugie” She was just a little one Who loved to dance and sing. She was always helping others To try to do their thing. She was active, kind, and loved By all the Senior Class. Derryl Frazier, known as Sugie, Has left us with her past. Derryl Frazier, now gone, The girl that had goals to Marry, work and buy a home. But God now has her soul. Never will we forget the smile She always had, because of Sugie, Our little Queen, Her loved ones now are sad. We should always remember the Things she tried to do, Because Derryl Frazier's life is over, And part of ours is too. -Sharon Williams CHORUS “We hear the whispers of the heart Through the songs of our souls. You can fill a silence, Or make it louder- By lending your voice to the wind. We shall bear the silence Only when it is followed by your song- For you bring to us The echoing beauty of the word And spread joy where there was none.” -B.E. 122 Mr. Bruce Bennett, Advisor, Regini Desai, Bruce Reilly, Ada Bosques F P U H T Y U S R 1 E C A N S' CLUB ROW ONE: Sharon Morgan, Barbara Morgan, Linda Eng, Cautam Desaj. OR A SPELL OF EVIL 153 Only in our tears do we remember our genuine laughter. We face the day with blank stares, tired glances, and cynical smiles-a plague which is rapidly spreading among those who profess to be young. We either deny the existence of a tomorrow, or place our faith in that one which shall not devour our last remaining traces of hope. Perhaps some who speak of the success of the future can only do so because they refuse to listen to the failures of yesterday. If we continue as a blind and pretending mass, we shall eventually lose the truth of real- ity. And one who refuses to see the moon cannot know the coming of the sun. We have been led by papier mache leaders who are augmented by their own adherence to the form of their frames. Shaped by hands other than their own, they are now finding that those who were mold- ed into peaceful acceptance are no longer content to be the finished work of others. To the present foolishness of our wisdoms, which is evident in our values, we can hopefully say good-bye. If in the future we shall dwell-in the land of conjecture, fear, and erasures-we must first learn that the past and future do not exist independently; today is the first cause of tomorrow. To this principle we devote the following passage of time, and ask only that you make some use of your past... in the presence of your future. -B.E. 154 Traveling makes more tools than wise men Russian proverb segments of itself sporadically and violently Dr. Glenn T. One Billy Oram of Newark today became our city’s first streaker, much to the interest of two seventyish matrons who saw the young man streak past them at Shop-Rite. Naturally, the ladies dropped all their bundles of milk of magnesia, Zwieback Toast, and mashed potato flakes. By the way, he was marked unprepared by his gym teacher. Coshocton, Ohio (Home of YEARBOOK HOUSE).. .500 additional toilet seats were shipped to Washington, D.C. today from the Coshocton Toilet Seat Company here. The reason for the large shipment was explained as an answer for the increased demand in the D.C. area lately. Newark, New Jersey.. .The Board of Education announced today that to meet the read- ing demands of Vailsburg High students, Dick and Jane Visit Gramps, Spot and Puff Grow Up, and My Weekly Reader will be sent in large supply. Newark, New Jersey . . . Henry Q. Normal was kidnapped yesterday from his home on South Orange Avenue. His wife was informed that he would safely return if she turned over 200 pounds of beef from their family-owned meat market. Newark, New Jersey ... Students at Vailsburg High held their annual riot today. They prod “Who cares about over-crowded classrooms, low reading levels, and poor race relations! W our baby pictures in the yearbook! New York, New York ... A group of 100 students at Vailsburg High, Newark, New Jersej eled here on a field trip yesterday. They dedded to remain overnight and return today explanation for this was that their rented bus, UGH-613, ran out of gasoline. Today is ai| numbered day. We can all choose to be slightly blind-and deaf in one ear, but first we must be aware of all that has passed before our eyes-never to be seen by our brains. Unarmed against the manoeuvres of the masters, we have accepted that which has passed before us with little attempt at comprehension. At pre- sent we stand helplessly alone, deserted by a logic which has remained dor- mant through too many past opportunities. We have allowed ourselves to drown beneath a deluge of mysteries, injustices, and obvious-if yet-dis- guised-lies. Just as formal education does not signify the beginning of the learning process, neither does it mean the completion of the never-ending battle a- gainst ignorance. To learn to employ to its fullest that beautifully complex instrument of thought, is to protect oneself against a world which forces its followers to yield to its conceptions of right and wrong. But first we must be able to determine friend, so as to be on guard against foe. To accomplish this, I would now ask you who shall “graduate to reflect upon yesterday-before you seek tomorrow. Recall your textbooks-the pictures. . .the words. Now reproduce the Idea-your concrete visions con- jured up by interest (or through force), and the original thoughts (which were seen by too many before you). Then think back to those you have thoughtlessly blasphemed for their constant badgering, their stubborn ad- herence to one ideal, and their seemingly petty demands. Now re-examine all in the light of a new day-one free from resentment; one holds for the few, gratitude. Some you can recognize; others you may forget. This time, you may want to say thank you. Whoever shrinks from the idea will finally unlearn the art of thinking. -Bonnie Ellen Sherbo 169 G I R L S' T R A C K ROW ONE: M. Jones, I. Baskerville, L. Maralokous, Coach Florence Salerno, P. You bet your sweet @ $%? that Angela Cosimano this is the last booster, love, ang 223 God offers to every mind its choice between truth and repose. Take which you please-you can never have both —Ralph Waldo Emerson My shell is my castle; I have no wants. As long as you don’t bother me, I won't bother you. I'll have my milk delivered, so I can't complain that the milk machine is out of order. I won’t vote, so that my candidate can't lose. I won't make the effort to meet new people, so that I won’t be judged by their reputations. I won’t marry, so that the family I might have won’t be scrutinized by others. And I'll allow myself to die of natural causes so that some doctor will not curse medical science during the autopsy. I will fade away into oblivion . . . Our world is falling apart at the seams, ripping in the seat, wearing out at the knees. We should see so much that needs to be altered-let out, hemmed, tailored, patched-but few will run out to Woolworth's for an iron-on patch. It would take just 15 seconds of concentrated heat, but the time needed to plug in the appliance is too much of a bother. If we were brought into this world to sit back and watch -to be spectators-we'd have built-in heating pads for bottoms. We'd have antennae for senses, and cardboard instead of cerebellum. And they’d fit some people perfectly. That cardboard gray would blend in unobtrusively with their blah-neutral personalities. The holes for the antennae would leave just enough room for air, if they are still humane enough for that lowly function. We need only bother expose our ears to what we want them to listen to; otherwise-they are useless. Our eyes need only be translucent lenses, letting in just enough light to see directly behind us, keeping everything delightfully, conveniently, out of focus. For those who have skipped over this page to go on through the book, counting only how many times their faces have appeared, I leave only this message: the world is what you have made it. Time will not stop to let one person off this merry-go-round, nor will it slow down to make it any easier for another to stay on his horsie; it is not about to provide insurance for bad risks. Just because you don’t care, doesn't mean that Fate will not touch you in its own special way; it will bring ecstasy or tragedy, or both, but you won't care . . . Pray, if the mood hits you, that God will watch over you, because it doesn't look as though anyone else will - especially you. And how many times can a man turn his head, pretending he just doesn't see? -Bob Dylan 224 DO YOU REMEMBER WHEN: A postage stamp was 6 J? . . . Spaghetti was economical? . . .
