We look toward a time when there will be enough for every- one in this land of plenty. We dream of a time when children will never even have to read of the slaughter of men, a time when children will not have to ask, “What is this thing called peace?”, for it will have been the basis of their lives. The dream is an old one, one that has been obscured, ex- ploited and disregarded at times in the past. We, however, will not allow that dream to be glossed over. We of the generation of careers, of people who will no longer stand to see inhuman conditions continue, want our dreams realized now. We dedicate our lives to finding our place in the sun, know- ing full well we can be together if we only try. And because we are also the generation of idealistic believers, we know we can reach our goal. It is therefore with the greatest respect that we dedicate this book to the dreamers of our generation, the people living at the greatest time of man's existence, the people who will effect the change to peace.

Many years have elapsed since the black man was freed by Lincoln but only today is he beginning to win the long-sought goal of equality. We of the so-called ‘‘enlightened generation ’ have a dream. We dream of the fresh, unspoiled country that was America. We dream of respect for personal ideas and convictions, respect as human beings, not as members of ‘‘races’ —except for the race of Man.
