Text from Pages 1 - 184 of the 1970 volume:
“
From the beginning men have been reaching for a goal. They have cried, suffered, and bled through thousands of years for the purpose of attaining a better world. They have been driven by inner convictions, confi- dent the route they were taking was the right one. But sometimes the route strayed from the ideals of man. At other times obstacles were overcome and men were able to advance civilization toward the better world they so desperately desired. It was once a mere dream that man would ever walk on the moon, yet today the dream is reality . . . Many years have elapsed since the black man was freed by Lincoln but only today is he beginning to win the long-sought goal of equality. We of the so-called ‘‘enlightened generation ’ have a dream. We dream of the fresh, unspoiled country that was America. We dream of respect for personal ideas and convictions, respect as human beings, not as members of ‘‘races’ —except for the race of Man. We look toward a time when there will be enough for every- one in this land of plenty. We dream of a time when children will never even have to read of the slaughter of men, a time when children will not have to ask, “What is this thing called peace?”, for it will have been the basis of their lives. The dream is an old one, one that has been obscured, ex- ploited and disregarded at times in the past. We, however, will not allow that dream to be glossed over. We of the generation of careers, of people who will no longer stand to see inhuman conditions continue, want our dreams realized now. We dedicate our lives to finding our place in the sun, know- ing full well we can be together if we only try. And because we are also the generation of idealistic believers, we know we can reach our goal. It is therefore with the greatest respect that we dedicate this book to the dreamers of our generation, the people living at the greatest time of man's existence, the people who will effect the change to peace. 4 1970 VALKYRIAN VAILSBURG HIGH SCHOOL NEWARK. EUGENE FOLEY I’m dreaming of the mountain I’m dreaming of the sea, I'm dreaming of a better world For both you and me. I'm dreaming of a world, that has plenty to give, I'm dreaming of a better world Within which we can live. So dream on, little one, Dream on my little son, And your dreams will come true. I’m dreaming of the dreams, that my parents once had. I'm dreaming that the end will come to all that is so had, I'm dreaming of a world A world that I can see A place where both the white and black Can live and brothers be. I'm dreaming of a world that has found peace at last. I’m dreaming of a world that hangs Freedom’s banner at her mast. I’m dreaming of a world, that has never fought a war. Countless hours have gone into this book. Without the help of many people this would not have been possible. Sufficient credit to all those involved could not be expressed. The faculty has aided us tremendously—special thanks goes to Mr. Kane, our advisor. Other seniors, including those not on the staff, have also done an exceptional job. We have tried to bring out a message in the Valkyrian. To find your dream in life and carry it through is paramount for success in today’s society. The Valkyrian staff has had its dream come true. We feel we have published something meaningful, something appropriate for today's way of life. To all those who have helped the staff in any way — we thank you again. Peace. SUE KAPLAN EditorinChief
