Text from Pages 1 - 184 of the 1968 volume:

The Valkyries were those in Norse mythology who inspired the Vikings during battle, giving the warriors courage to fend off their foes. These maidens were sent to select the bravest heroes and bring them back to Val- halla. To carry out our theme of the Vikings, we call our yearbook the Valkyrian after these maidens who gave encouragement in time of need. 2 TABLE OF CONTENTS Faculty 8 Activities 26 Sports 60 Seniors 96 Senior Directory 148 Ads 158 i m IL Vailsburg High School Newark. New Jersey These are the years of protest, the years during which the young people of this nation are demonstrating, debating, and expressing concern in order to show their feelings about the world in which they live. Young Americans have inherited a world beset with many problems. However, these problems can be overcome if each youth finds within himself the courage to stand alone and defend his convictions. The individual must form his own opinions, express his own attitudes, and fight for what he believes is right and good. The individual, the youth standing alone, can build a stronger, a better society. 3 AffectionateI Dedicated to MR. EUGENE FOLEY His loyal service as teacher and counselor has contributed significantly to the growth of Vailsburg High School. His affability, graciousness, and Irish wit have lightened the labors of those who know him. Just by being himself, therefore, he has given countless students a living image of the kind of person all of us would like to be. 5 SENIOR ADVISORS 7 8 9 MR. And sunset, and the colours of the earth. These had seen movement, and heard music: known Slumber and waking; loved; gone proudly friended; Felt the quick stir of wonder; sat alone; Touched flowers and furs and checks. All this is ended. There are waters blow n by changing w inds to laughter And lit by the rich skies, all day. And after. Frost, with a gesture, stays the waves that dance And wandering loveliness. He leaves a white Unbroken glory, a gathered radiance, A width, a shining peace, under the night. —Rupert Urookc MRS. GERTRUDE METZGER Physical Education Instructor IN MEMORIAM MR. Zinckgraf Mr. Rocco Zoppo Michael and Margaret Zultanky 173 AUTOGRAPHS 174 AUTOGRAPHS It takes a great deal of work to produce a yearbook, and the com- bined efforts of many persons. To say “thank you to all who assisted me seems an insignificant acknowledgement, and yet I am sure they expect no more, for they gave freely and willingly of their services. First I would like to thank Mr. Hanley, who devoted so much time and supplied so many valuable suggestions and criticisms to our yearbook. Luckily he came prepared with a large supply of patience and good humor. I would also like to thank Mrs. Luft. who was so generous in her help to our art department, and Mr. Marcopoto, who worked so hard for our photography department. Finally I would like to thank, aside from the editors who worked so diligently day by day. the stu- dents who helped in our sales and advertising campaigns. The help of all these persons has been deeply appreciated. Sincerely, Editor-in-Chief 176 LtKopwHtd by RAC PUBLISHING CO.. INC 3t2 Grow Avenge Cedar Grove. N. i.
