While academic pursuits arc of first impor- tance, extracurricular activities are a necessary phase of school to make our education com- plete. These activities, which include sports and clubs, teach us how to get along with one another. No matter what the organization, its success is directly dependent upon the willing- ness of its members to forget their differences and work for the benefit of the group. If the peoples of the world would emulate the spirit of cooperation shown by students who w'ork together in school organizations, we would have that harmony and friendship, that peace through understanding,” which can overcome the aggression and hatred besetting the w-orld today. 3

In a world where man seems to exist for the sole purpose of destroying himself, preserva- tion of peace is a universal concern. Everywhere we turn—newspapers, radio, television—evi- dence of man's aggression can be found. In order to preserve and maintain peace, the peo- ple of the world must forget their prejudices, aid one another, and learn to live in harmony. The key to universal harmony is well stated in the theme of the 1964-65 New York World’s Fair: Peace Through Understanding.” Understanding comes from insight, insight comes from education, and education is the ob- jective of the school. School stimulates us to think, to compare, to criticize, to comprehend; it makes us aware of our environment and how we fit into it. The study of classroom subjects— mathematics, English, business law, chemistry, consumer problems, etc.—under the expert direction of the faculty, prepares us to promote the betterment of mankind.
