The theme of the impressive 1964-65 New York World’s Fair was peace through understanding . Through understanding one gains insight into himself, other human beings, and the many problems of the world. As a result of this insight, the feeling of kinship among men is increased and the solution of world problems is brought closer. Understanding, therefore, is the most effective key to peace. By far the most instrumental factor at Vailsburg High in bringing about understanding is the faculty. The competent teacher not only instructs from texts and teaching aids, but also relics on his own experi- ence, wisdom, and insight. The latter are far more valuable and effec- tive than any books or aids he may employ. We at Vailsburg High have been fortunate in having teachers who have a wealth of experience, wisdom, and insight as well as knowledge to foster the understanding that leads to peace.

DEDICATION During our high school years we were fortunate to have an expert guidance staff to aid us, advise us, and pull us through our difficulties. All our coun- selors shared in helping us solve our problems and plan our futures; to each of them we offer sincere thanks. But we owe our greatest debt of gratitude to our head counselor. Miss Elizabeth A. McHugh. Miss McHugh knew each one of us personally. She took time from her busy schedule to lend a sympathetic car to all our problems, no matter how large or small they seemed. Many of us first met Miss McHugh when we entered the seventh grade. We were her 'children” then; we arc her children” now, as we always shall be. We are much richer individuals for having known Miss McHugh, and we are grateful for having her to guide us through a very difficult part of our lives. To express heartfelt appreciation for all she has done, we, the class of nine- teen hundred and sixty-five, proudly dedicate our yearbook, the VALKYRIAN, to Miss Elizabeth A. McHugh.
