THE TWENTY-THIRD PSALM The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not want; He maketh me to lie down in green pastures. He leadeth me beside the still waters; He restoreth my soul. He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadoiv of death, I ivill fear no evil; for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies; thou anointest my head with oil, my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall folloiv me all the days of my life; and 1 will divell in the house of the LORD for ever. During our years in Vailsburg, there have been many teachers who have worked unselfishly in helping and guiding us along the road to maturity. One such teacher is Mr. Henry Yam. Aside from being an excellent history teacher, he also serves in numerous other capacities. As guidance counselor, he was always ready to give his moral and physical support to any of those pupils who were faced with distressing problems. Through his efforts and under his sage leadership, the Student Council has become the body where our representatives can voice opinions concerning the whole school. Mr. Yam, as head of the Audio-Visual Department, has engineered the mechanics of many an assembly. Also, anyone who has ever had the opportunity of being late knows whose face is the first to he seen. Whenever we think of Mr. Yam, we will he reminded of his soft-spoken mannerism, the helping hand he always had ready to lend, and his elegant mustache. To express the sincere thanks of the graduating class, we proudly dedicate the VALKYRIAN ?64 to Mr. Henry Yam. Our teachers and administrators have played a large part in molding us into what we are now and what we shall be in the future. Through their adept efforts, we have gained much knowledge and insight of ourselves, others, and our complicated world. Although we leave Vailsburg High School, the faculty and administration will carry on and continue to teach and influence thousands more like us. We seniors would like to thank all those who helped us travel along that rocky road to maturity. We hope we have made their profession as enjoyable and worthwhile as they have made our education. DR. JOHN T. McSHARRY WILLIAM A. MONPHODE JH. vice principal Nothing was ever too insignificant for Mr. Monprode's careful attention to our scheduling problems, which were solved with patience, understanding, and dispatch. The Class of 1961 was fortunate to be the recipient of Mr. Monprode's kindness, warm interest, and continual encouragement. We sincerely thank him for making our sta at Vails-burg High School an enjoyable one. principal Dr. McSharry a guidance, inspiration, and firm discipline will lead us to accept new responsibilities and positions of leadership in the future. As an educator and leader. Dr. McSharry will always stand high in our esteem. As a friend, he will always he in our affection. We. the Senior Class of Vailsburg High, are extremely grateful that we have found such a person—Mrs. Zarin. our guidance counselor, who has done so much to help us. We sincerely express our appreciation and gratitude MR. FRANK J. HILL The Graduating Class of Vailsburg High School is greatly indebted to this dedicated advisor. LEONORA FLYNN The year 1963 will he remembered by Vailsburg students because it marked the passing of two of our most beloved teachers. Mr. Viliam’s and Mrs. Flynn’s selfless devotion and tireless efforts to help their pupils will not soon be forgotten by anyone who had the privilege of being in any of their classes. It seems that the four years we spend in high school pass all too quickly. Of these, the senior year is by far the most rewarding. Parties, proms, plans for the future, and finally graduation culminate, perhaps, one of the best years of our lives. Yes, we worked hard—being Seniors added much to our responsibilities. Most of us learned that life isn't all “fun and games, ' but we shouldered our new obligations. When we leave Vailsburg, we’ll leave behind many friends and many memories, some happy and some sad. Yet, the future spreads her winding road before us and beckons: “Come! Come! See what life really has to offer!” We hope we are prepared. SENIOR ADVISORS We, the Senior Class, are deeply indebted to our faculty advisors—Mrs. Evelyn Bacheller and Mr. Leon Lippman. The goals which we, as seniors, had set for ourselves were not easily attained and, at times, seemed impossible. Our advisors, however, were with us every step of the way. Patiently, and with great forliearance, they have helped us time and time again to overcome obstacles which we thought insurmountable. Though words are poorly insufficient, we, the graduating class of 1964. would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to our devoted advisors. We will always remember them. Basketball; Yearbook Business-Fund-Raising Comm. We, as seniors, have this to say to our esteemed colleagues, the freshmen, sophomores, and juniors of1 Vailsburg High School: Always have faith. Whenever you feel that the world is closing in on you and life seems impossible, keep your chin up, your back straight, put a smile on I your face, and, above all, believe in yourself. Faith is what keeps the world alive. It is that indefinable ele-1 ment that has helped this great country through two wars, that indefinable element that goes up with every | missile and every astronaut that ever left this good earth, that indefinable element which, if called upon, will give you a successful high school career. As underclassmen, you have no doubt experienced « . many of the frustrations of learning. FOOTBALL Nineteen sixty-three will always stand out as a momentous year for our varsity football squad. The climax of the season came on a partly cloudy Saturday when our Vikings played away at distant Union Hill. The game was rated as a toss-up. hut the home team had the advantage of a familiar field and the partisan fans, while we had been demoralized by a heart-breaking loss to Central High on the previous weekend. However, we were not to be denied the first victory in our school’s short history. Unknown to the team, several bus loads of Vailsburg rooters had also made the long trek to Union Hill. Upon the sight of the friendly faces in the stands, the team was revitalized. Led by the cries of ebullient fans and cheerleaders, the Viking blitz-krieg offense struck for the two quick touchdowns, while the defense held off the tenacious opponent. Vailsburg had its initial win, one that was a real school effort. The exhilaration of Vailsburg fans and the sportsmanship of the individual players on the field have become a tradition of our athletic teams in these three years at Vailsburg—a tradition we hope that will always exist. Although last year's team had a better “won and lost record, this year's squad, despite being handicapped by numerous injuries, made an extremely creditable showing and came very close to pulling off the upset of the year when it played the mighty Central Blue Devils on even terms for most of the game. Among the luminaries in basketball for the big “V this season were: Ra DeRiggi. Jim Bartilotta. Mike Insaiella, Carl Roberts. Joe Purzvki. and. of course, the phenomenal Glen Schmieder. Glen, using primarily his blistering jump shot, ran up an average of al out 16 points a game and scored 30 points in two games (against Bloomfield Tech and Newark Tech) to become the all-time high scorer in Vails burg Cage history. Nor does it have attractive cheerleaders boosting morale. Actually, the sport of swimming doesn't have the glamor of football, basketball, or baseball; hut what it does have is a team of hoys whose main objective is to make VaiUburg’s name known and looked up to as a school with competitive students. Naturally, the backbone of any team is its coach. Sol Stone, most commonly called Coach Stone, is truly the core of the team. Ask any member of the swimming team what he thinks of the coach, and the reply most assuredly will he “the greatest ’ This year Coach Stone anticipates that we will try our hardest to place second in the city. When asked what type of boy it would take to be on Vailsburg’s swimming team. Coach Stone said, “It takes a unique type of boy with courage to be able to stick to the daily grind of training. It also takes a boy who loves swimming to derive such satisfaction from the training.” “Above all.” he continued, “it takes a boy loyal enough to dedicate his talent for the good of the school.” Last year Vailsburg placed third in the city in swimming. BASEBALL Tlie 1963 sports season of Vailsburg High School was highlighted by a fantastic show of ability on the part of our baseball team. The Vailsburg nine, with the superb coaching of Mr. Robert Reilly, captured City and State laurels in its first year of varsity competition. Their first objective was to overcome the hold that East Side had on the City League. With only four losses, our team captured the City Championship. From there the Vikings went on to challenge Hanover Park for the State Championship at City Stadium. Winning this tight game earned top honors for us and blazers for the team. The championship team lost four members: pitcher, Vinnie Fazzari; first base-man. Bobby Baker: and outfielders, Lou Pascale and Joe Ingaro. The present senior class contributed nine members to the squad: Fred Salvatoricllo, Leo Mongiovi. Bob Buckowski. Glen Sehmieder. Marcial Garlitos. Art Brady, Bob Farese. Tony Carlucci. and Joe Penbcra. Seniors, Tony Carlucci and Joe Pcnbera. brought honor to the Vikings by being selected for the All-City Team. Vailsburg’s wing-footed sons of Mercury go into the 1964 track season with a great deal of confidence and assurance. The activities program lias been greatly increased since the formation of the theory that places emphasis on a well-rounded education. The high school’s primary function is to prepare adolescents for their challenging life ahead. This idea is culminated in Vailsburg High's varied activities program. Through a wide range of activities, the pupil learns to participate in the group affairs of his organization, thereby developing leadership and character. Many clubs are formed to provide helpful information about specific topics. The student’s opportunities at Vailsburg are for the most part unlimited. EXECUTIVE BOARD L. to R.. For most of us this has been our sixth year in the building; wfe have been privileged to witness its startling metamorphosis from grammar school to high school. The phenomenal mushrooming of labs, and typing rooms has served to stir us from C to shining C. Even more important is the remarkable evolution of Vailsburg as an academic and athletic Parnassus. We realize that high school is only a beginning, but with this beginning we are sure that what will follow will prove worthy of all the time and effort spent on us by both the administration and faculty of this fine school. To the young men and ladies who now cross our threshold officially for the last time, we wish you well. May your tears be few but salutary, your laughter true, your dreams a prelude to reality.
