VAIKYR1AN 3 The Valkyries were those in Norse mythology who inspired the Vikings during battle, giving the warriors courage to fend off their foes. These maidens were sent to select the bravest heroes and bring them back to Valhalla. To carry our theme of the Vikings, we named our yearbook the Valky- rian after these people who gave encouragement in time of need. As seniors, we stand looking back at those past expectations, which are now only memories. Although we are individuals with varied plans for our futures, we have been able to work together, as a unit, for our school. To us, the first graduating class of Vailsburg High School, the Valkyrian is a sym- bol of the work we did, the fun we had, and the lessons we learned as we endeav- ored to set a precedent for future classes. This book briefly portrays the hopes we had four years ago and the new dreams we have for the future. With a great spirit of pride, we the graduating class of June, yearbook, the Valkyrian. 3 DEDICATION Wc are living in an age of scientific discovery, an age of firsts. Vailsburg High School has experienced many firsts in the past two years. In these many first endeavors, leadership plays a very important role. Our student body, inspired by its school motto Liberty With Loyalty, has proven itself to be a group of loyal followers under a dedicated leader. We, the graduating class of June, Nineteen Hundred and Sixty-three, wish to ex- press our sincerest gratitude to such a leade r, Doctor John T. McSharry, our principal. To you, Doctor McSharry, our utmost appreciation for all that you’ve done. 5 Mr. William A. Monprode, Jr. Vice Principal The Graduating Class wishes to express its appreciation to Mr. William A. Monprode, Vice Principal, who served during our senior year. His fairness in dealing with problems that inevitably arose in the course of our high school days won the respect of all of us. Mr. Monprode was responsible for the scheduling of classes for the entire school, a difficult task in any school, but particularly laborious in Vailsburg which was still in its formulative stages. The graduating class sincerely thanks Mr. Monprodc for all he has done for not only us but for the entire school. In the last two years, Miss Elizabeth A. McHugh has established a guidance depart- ment to take care of particular needs of all of the students. Our problems and questions have always been met with the deepest un- derstanding and kindest consideration from Miss McHugh. Since such a tremendous amount of her time and advice has been devoted exclusively to seniors, we will always remember Miss McHugh with our deepest affection. Miss Elizabeth A. McHugh Head Guidance Counselor Mrs. Virginia M. Sprcnger Counselor Mrs. Spengcr and Mr. Yam were always ready to lend a sympathetic ear to any of our problems, and the)’ always came through with a helpful solu- tion. In our senior year, w'hen the prospect of the future was be- fore us, they expended un- limited time and effort so that we would be prepared for the new life after graduation. In a few lines of writing, it is impossible to express our ap- preciation and gratitude to the two people who have given so many help-filled hours for our guidance. In high school, this last year is looked forward to as The Best. Yet, when it ends, a bit of sadness re- mains. To some it is a happy year, a hard year, or maybe even a sad year. But, no mat- ter what the senior year brings, one phase of it re- mains the same for every- one—as soon as the diplo- ma is put in the hand of a senior, the world and its treasures open their doors and a new life begins. SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS No thrill can compare with the honor of being a member of the first graduating class of a new school. There is a great deal of satisfaction in being a trail blazer. The responsibility is great for everyone, and especially so for the officers elected to lead the Senior Class. The first graduating class wishes to extend its thanks and appreciation to our capable officers who have devoted so much of their time and energy to the class. Through their enthusiasm and efforts, they have made the first graduating class a class to be remem bered and one to be proud of. Claud President Q UZ £ Treat urer 18 Secretary Behind a yearbook is a staff of people who edit, write, and plan all that goes into the book. They put their hearts into all that they do, wanting the best for their yearbook. The VALKYRIAN staff is no exception. They have worked many long and tedious hours to put together an annual which would meet the standards they set. The completion of the VALKYRIAN gives to- them a su- preme feeling of accomplishment. She has a wonderful talent for keeping up ’with the seniors and their ac- tivities as well as their problems. For the past two years the faculty has been enriched by her presence because of her excellent ability for teaching Latin. The senior class is deeply grateful for her wonderful participation in all their activities. MR. EUGENE HANLEY The success of the senior class must be partially attributed to the helpful sugges- tions of this quick-thinking senior advisor. Beside devoting most of his time to senior problems, he also teaches senior and junior English and is a chairman of the Dramatics Department. The seniors sincerely wish to thank Mr. Hanley for his dedication to the senior class and their numerous activities. VAILSBURG HIGH SCHOOL RING Our school ring was designed exclusively for Vailsburg High School by the Josten Ring Company of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Our ring bears a purple amethyst faceted stone. On the right side of the ring, there is a Viking ship and our teams' name. On the left side is our school shield with our motto, Liberty with Loyalty engraved over it. 78 MEMORANDUM FROM THE CLASS OF 1963 Dear Juniors, Remember back about two years ago when we returned to Vailsburg to be the first senior class? We came to you from West Side High School where we had spent one whole year of our high school career. Upon returning, it was expected of us to be the pace-setters of this newly formed high school. Much was to rest on our shoulders during these trying times. All that we accomplished could not have been done without your fine spirit and backing which we received. It was difficult at first, to adjust to the situation, but c were determined to make this new school one to be proud of. Many hours of both mental and physical exercise were put in so that we could make Vailsburg High School excel in sports as well as academic rating. Our ultimate goal w'as to set standards for all the classes that would follow in the ever-so-near future. Before we knew it, our senior year had come and our thoughts were turned to leaving our school. I am sure that you remember, also, how hectic our final year was, and how there were always pleas to you and the underclassmen to come to our dances, buy our yearbook and pins, and just about everything else imaginable. But, all the while we did these things we knew that this was our last time doing them. So juniors, if we were a little bothersome at times, please forgive us. We were seniors, and you will find out that this is a very- important year in high school. Our senior year can be spoken of only in superlatives. It was our best year in high school; it was the most w-ork, but the most fun. Our senior year is also the saddest, in the sense that it is our last. Though we arc sad to sec our high school days come to an end, we look forward to the future with a feeling of joy and anticipation. Do not forget us, juniors, and think of us often. Try to gain from our many experiences. Now you will be seniors and at the end of your wonderful year, read this letter again. You will realize that I ha%c spoken only the truth and you will under- stand even better all that I have said. You will then know that this letter was written. From the heart of, A Senior Post Script — I hope your senior year will be as great as ours! 79 In our first year as a senior high school, we have taken great strides toward the es- tablishment of a full athletic program which offers to all its participants the opportu- nity to enjoy the relaxation of a good workout, to gain physical prowess in a sport, and to develop a healthy competitiveness both as an individual and as a part of a team. s 0 R T 1 FIRST ROW—A. We take pride in the fact that our school was able, in one year, to present exten- sive courses in the sciences, arts, and commercial sub- jects. Some idea of the scope of the curricula offered at V.H.S. can be seen in the photos taken during a typi- cal Vailsburg class day. NEWARK, N. J. A LETTER OF THANKS Dear Friends, I find it truly hard to put into written words my sentiments about this book. To me, and to others, I am sure, it means a great deal more than just our first yearbook; cherished memories all of our lives. Many times I thought it useless to bother or continue with it. Many hours of trouble and doubt plagued our editorial staff. However, somehow we managed. Here, in the last pages of this, our first yearbook, I alone now, would like to express my deepest gratitude to everyone who in any way aided in making our book a success. To the editorial staff I can say only thank you”: thank you for the many happy hours of the many days of the many months we have worked as an indivis- ible unit. We all remember the great times we spent working together in our year- book room; through these memories I can best express my thanks to you for all that you’ve done. It would be remiss of me, if I did not now thank our advisors, Mrs. Marylou Connor Sauerborn and Mr. Eugene P. Hanley, for their expert guidance and wonder- ful understanding, not only with our yearbook, but with every senior activity ever undertaken at Vailsburg. In concluding, may I request that in the future, as you brush the dust from the cover of this book or remove it, after so many years, from its home on the shelf, and sit down possibly with a tear in your eye to read it once again, and recall days gone by—may I request that you read this letter—and remember me! it has become part of our physical and mental beings, and it will live within our Editor-in-Chief 161 162 164 M GARY R I JEANNE
