SUPERINTENDENT'S MESSAGE Freedom, a soul-stirring word, may be defined as an individual's right to decide, to plan, and to act. It is achieved only through self-discipline and responsibility. This type of freedom cannot be acquired without a right to make mistakes and grow through them. It is not a gift handed to the fortunate, but rather a self-won prize for-those who know how to seek and use it. As superintendent of Vacaville Union High School I am a con- tinuing witness to this truth. Freedom, then, is a necessity for the full development of youth's powers, especially during the second decade of life. Certainly we must set reasonable limits to the freedom of those not yet fully mature, however, we are likely to underestimate youthls strength -their capacity to go it alone. This story of Vacaville High School, ULATIS '55, is an example of the proper use of freedom-the right to decide, to plan, and to act. The Ulatis staff and the Student body deserve my sincere thanks for a job well done-for exemplifying a most worthy secondary educational objective, namely: to help students in their journey toward free- dom--to a higher level of maturity.
