The halls of VIT prove to be a unique trip this year — around the clock. Early in the morning, if you were to intrude, you would find our janitors cleaning and bracing themselves for the day ahead. Mr. Prinz busies himself with phone calls and morning duties as he awaits the arrival of students. By 8 o’clock, students trickle in slowly, calling out names of their gang members or standing quietly in the lunch line or laughing about last night's happenings. Through the long morning classes, the aroma of the special noontime meal fills the air, tempting students to the cafeteria. Bells ring, signifying breaks in classes, flailing rushes of students to the hall. During the late afternoons, the peppery essence of Spanish food or some other exotic cuisine fills the halls, drawing study hall students to beg at the doors of the Spanish or Home Ec rooms. 2 THE UNIQUE FACES 1. Quinton Bailey, Star Raider , crazy at play practice. 2. Unique Senior tans at the Senior Night Pep Assembly in February. 3. Billy Waters, alias Johnny Spot, smiles when he forgets his line at play practice. 4. Charlie. Matt, and Neal wracking their brains at the Senior Bowl in Canton. 5. Randy Dennis examines the lens. 6. Joe Butcher drives the lane during the final minutes of the Avon game. OF V.l.T. After 3:14, students conduct their extra-curricular activities. From sports to clubs to play practice, between 3:14 and 5, the school is never empty! During the evening, the gym rings with the spirited clamor of fans rooting on the basketball teams or music festival participants. The spirit at VIT has risen substantially through the year, and fans come out — rain or shine — to encourage all of our teams. Then, late at night, quiet and alone again, the janitors begin their ritual of revitalizing our beloved school, taking special care to make everything presentable for our next school day. To outsiders, VIT may not be something special, but to you, the proud students of VIT, it is a place of fun, learning, and friendly faces. Through your experiences here, VIT has become UNIQUELY YOURS . . . — Kim Fross, senior 4 Mandy Lidwell goes punk during Homecoming Week. 5. Arlie Welker — the 70s revisited. 6. Dennis Wherley, Kim Azbell and Larry Goodin The 1986-87 school year was an active one for the Athletic Boosters. Various money-making projects included chicken dinners in each town during the summer months, pizza sales, a spaghetti supper, trash bag sales, a penny carnival, a candy sale, a pie-in-the-face” contest, and concession sales. Also, spirit” sweatshirts, pants, and coats were sold during the year to promote pride in our school. This will be a continuing project. I help students learn to listen and sit, or know the difference between write and rit. I guide the crayons, pencils, and pens, coloring in art or counting by tens. I'm found at recesses, P.E., and lunch, encouraging manners from the rowdy bunch. I share a hug, a smile, or cheer, to assist in calming all kinds of fears. I can be found in most everyone’s heart, uniquely yours from the very start. I hope this rhyme can help you see, why the smiles on these pages mean so much to me. - Janet Jackson, 5th grade teacher 2 Marcia Baker: 1st grade Elizabeth Burton: 5th grade Luan Bushmire: 3rd grade Jean Connour: 4th grade Sylvia Dailey: 7th and 8th grade English Jeanette Hammer: 4th grade Andrea Hart: 6th grade Melanie Heaton: 1st grade 10 Steve Kelly: 7th and 8th grade Math. So, to us, UNIQUE is the Class of ’87 ... — Bobette Boggs CRUISIN’ Some start as early as 4:00; others come out with the rising moon, but they all have the same destination: The Vermont Hardware Warehouse. Bright lights in your rearview mirror signaling you to pull over; braking at the sight of the cop; a different song blaring from each car window; parking one car just to climb into another to cruise around some more. At some point, we pull over at the warehouse. Some just sit while others immediately run over to the other cars to see what's going on. But after sitting for awhile, we become anxious. The car engines start. We have to cruise. Some just need to cruise over to the Carry-Out on a munchie run. Others leave to see if anyone new is out cruising. Some just cruise to look cool. Everyone cruises. Some start by entering town and cruising by the foundry. Others venture onto the square to start the evening out. No matter where you start, by the end of the night, the station, the bowling alley, Big G’s, the Carry-Out, Jerry’s Standard Station, and the warehouse are once again familiar sights. As the evening progresses, the cruisers drive out into the night to wait for another weekend. — Bobette Boggs 2 Scott Adcock Amy Birch Bobette Boggs Jackie Bunge Joe Butcher Adrea Craft 18 1 1. On any given day, you could probably hear a member of the Senior Class cutting down some aspect of VIT. It seems to be the cool thing to do. But when it's time for a pep assembly, the Senior Class clearly supports their name! Everything is put aside for half an hour. The only thing on our minds is yelling at the top of our lungs! We have made lots of signs that we use to support our unique class. The Juniors sometimes give us a little competition, but their yelling just compels us to yell a little louder! Not only do we partici-pafe n pep rallies, but we also participate in lots of spirit building activities! During Homecoming week, many super seniors dressed up to increase spirit. Even those who didn’t dress for punk day or nerd day did their part by enjoying those who did! The Class of ’87 could be called the cheerleader’s dream! The spirit and pride we've given the title “SENIORS” will hopefully shine through the years to come. HOMECOMING Despite losing the homecoming game to Warsaw, everyone attending the homecoming dance sponsored by the student council had an enjoyable and a memorable experience. The annual dance, which is the Student Council’s main project, culminates from a lot of hard work and effort by all the members involved. As a Senior, I realized how important this event is. The previous week’s activities built the spirit of the student body to a fevered pitch which finally ended at the coronation. The King and Queen elected by the student body were, Jim Hermes and Shelly Woods. Congratulations to them and the rest of the Homecoming Court! Thanks are also in order to the D.J., Bob Ogden, for a great show and to all the people who worked on the decorations. She stood in the lobby cafeteria waiting for that certain someone to walk in and light up her life. I knew I was that person. I moved over to her with that suave, little grin I reserve for chicks. As I anticipated, she greeted me with a smile. She grabbed my arm and led me onto the dance floor gym floor. Streamers of red. grey, and pink hung over the dancer’s heads. The soft aura of light and the music eminating from our KZ-93 dee-jay’s booth set the scene for romance. I turned to her with that adorable come-hither look I have and. of course, she melted. VIT’S STUDENT LEADERSHIP This year’s Student Council participated in many activities that benefitted the student body. In September, our disorganized crew succeeded in putting together a memorable homecoming. In December, we had a successful food drive coupled with our Second Annual Christmas Party. Different clubs participated in skits, with the Senior Class taking first prize. In April, we held the Student Council Volleyball Tournament that resulted in a narrow victory by the faculty. For our early project, the Student Council purchased a portable camcorder for the school. We hope the student body enjoyed this year and you can look forward to more exciting activities in the years to come. President, Joe Butcher 1. Bobette B. dives for a ball during the Stu. Co. Snowden MUSIC MAKERS MUSIC MAKERS The Musical Arts Program continued as a support group to the total music program at VIT both physically and financially. The group, through their money making projects, were able to pay for some purchases of music, bussing and entrance fees to Jr. High and High school contests and festivals for both band and chorus, some instrument repair, trips to the Peoria Symphony. and material for skirts for the 87-88 flag and pom-pom squads. They also purchased art supplies for Mrs. Ann Young whose art classes helped Mrs. Sheila Burton, the music instructor, with scenery for the Christmas musicals. The group purchased scripts and scores for the two Christmas musicals for the Jr. High and 5th and 6th grades, also paying royalties. A trip to see Jesus Christ Superstar was also included. With grant money from the Two Rivers Arts Council and the Illinois Arts Council the MAP group presented a musical variety show in the fall. Proceeds from the show helped finance the extra needs for the music department mentioned earlier. They also provided food for students participating in the 5th and 6th Grade Choral festival and the High School WAC Band and Choral Festival, serving dinners to attending administrators. band and choral directors. — Carol Baily 56 1. Tony Wherley This year in an attempt to reestablish the drama department. Mrs. Snowden and Mrs. Young left the sports scene” and took on the responsiblities as play directors. Early in the year they were surrounded by some very strangely-dressed Super Heroes from the planet Inferna. Trying to get Matt in and out of a box and Jim to do a somersault almost caused the sponsors to use KP3's kitchen utensils as real weapons! Laughs prevailed, however, until spring when the cast decided to do a mystery play. Mrs. Young and Mrs. Snowden learned a lesson never to be forgotten — high school students are not serious people. Nevertheless, the cast was ready to handle the death scene without laughing — until the night of the play when the victim's (Becky) fake fingernail flew across the stage during her crash to the floor. Even the sponsors giggled backstage — or did they cry? Both sponsors agree that working with the students producing a play is very rewarding. Watching the students come through the night of the play makes everything worthwhile. The final whistle sounded ending the score at 14-0 and ceased the infliction of extreme pain on the defeated Astoria Pirates. Although the 1986-87 basketball season was disappointing record-wise, I, as well as my teammates, found the season enjoyable as well as rewarding. Our team played an extremely tough schedule, including teams such as Beardstown, Avon, and Southeastern, who all had excellent seasons. We played every team we lost to closely and came up with two big wins over Astoria. Although our team wished to have had more success in the win-loss department, everyone who played was glad to have been part of the basketball program. — Neal Horwedel, senior Steven, Jim and Brian introduced into the starting line-up. I'm a senior. I'll soon be out of this place.-' But to me, being a senior is so much more. So many things have happened to the Class of '87. I’ve use ry£j eni% ear as a time to look back at all the memories we've created and to take this opportunity to realize just how much I care about everyone in our class. Before we got our senior books and keys, I was able to ignore the fact that high school is almost over, but now 1 have to face'it. There are some speciaTmornents that.come to mind when I think of our class. WhenKtm Isundress strap broke in the 3rd grade, Charley Yearbook — the hamster’s funeral — in the 6th grade, and when our 7th grade basketball team went to state. I getjeally depressed when I sit around and think about graduation. For 13 years of my life, I’ve been taught to get up early and go to school. I’ve gotten used to talking to my friends at least 5 days a week. Now, for the first time, I’m expected to go to a new place, make new friends, and enjoy every minute. It's hard to have fun right off when you’re still missing your old friends and your old way of life. Everyone around me is saying how much I’ve grown up and matured, but I’m so scared of this massive change that is happening to my life. Is that mature? It's not the school part I’m going to miss. It’s the cheerleading, softball, football, basketball, and clubs. Even my locker. In the short time that I’ve been a senior, I’ve grown a lot closer to my friends and some of my teachers. This new bond will make it even harder to leave. There is a lighter side to my senior year. After I’ve stopped being depressed, I’m able to see the positive points. My senior year means that my future is about to unfold. I’m going to get a chance to be the best in what I choose to do. My life awaits me. I want to be a success, in college and in the journalism field. I want to be able to come back to Illinois and show everyone that ever doubted me and my abilities that I was able to get through college and able to succeed. The conclusion to my senior year is the conclusion of this chapter in my life. It’s hard to believe that this will be1 the last time I will see some of my classmates. To me, my senior year is not a time to say. I’ll soon be out of here. It’s a time to say, “I’m gonna miss this a lot.” — Bobette Boggs • 9 SENIOR GRADUATION Tonight is a night that we will all remember and especially a night that the Seniors will remember because we realize that this may be the last time that we will all be together as one big class. I feel that this year has drawn the class of ’87 closer because we remember all of the good times we have sharepl together. We're like one big family and now it's time to split and go our separate ways. The parents here tonight should be very proud and very happy because they have brought us into the world, raised us all these years, and now are watching us graduate and are seeing us through to go out into the real world on our own. The parents might feel a little sad too because their son or daughter may be moving aVay, either to go to college, to look for work, or even to serve in the armed forces for a few years, but whatever the case, there should be some proud parents and grandparents, as well as friends and relatives. Also I want to compliment the teachers for a job well done in helping the Students to reach the point of graduation and also we thank you for putting up with us. I remember back in Junior .High when we walked into the classroom and the teacher said, “Oh, I’ve heard about this class,” but later on in the future you’ll look back and say. “I guess the class of ’87 wasn’t so bad after all.” Last but not least, I wanKto compliment all the seniors because they have worked hard and spent a lot of late hours studying at nighVto reach the point that we’re at tonight; and thfey have earnedmany awards given tonight, and those td be given out In the future. In conclusion, I would.like to say that there has been some bad memories and some sad memories, many of which we have shared together during our last year, but we'll always have those good memories to look back on in the future. Good bye V.l.T. a — Kenny Howell • 8 • 104 1 7
