1 Footprints of the 1984-85 VITO RIAN The 1984-85 school year held many strange and frustrating memories for the VIT district. Besides being in a depressed economy, other problems arose when board and teacher negotiations came to a stand still and two new teachers were not hired for the 85-86 year. Students found school life strained and uncomfortable. Friendships were out on the line when the decision to walk out in support of the teachers came into reality on March 22, 1985. The decision whether to walk out, stay in school, or stay home was one of the most difficult choices in our lives. At the Chicago meeting with the board and teachers, movement toward ratifying the contract was made. Tension on both the board and teacher's shoulders was finally starting to lift. Teachers ratified their contract on June 10, with the board ratifying it on June 14. The final outcome of the negotiations is a bright and positive step forward for the 85-86 year. Time Out! Even though the 1984-85 year had many complications, students were fortunate enough to have positive attitudes toward future success in and out of school. Personalities and attitudes were more evident in the classroom and also on the courts. The frustrations endured during the school day and at home were put to positive use in bettering the school and our own lives. The clubs and sponsers purchased new curtains for the stage and the Seniors provided new steps for the upcoming graduations. We, as students learned to stand up for our rights and not to be trampled in the transactions. Spirit was high and somehow the students stuck together and learned that in groups a number of objectives can be accomplished. Before the 1985 class was united as a group, we were split into three different elementaries. Then, when Ipava Grade School closed, it was decided that K-3 would go to Vermont, 4-6 would go to Table Grove, and then on to the high school. During the 1985 class's 4th grade year, the Board of Education decided the time had come to have one elementary school for all three towns. The 1985 class spent their sixth grade school year in the new VIT Grade School. As the Seniors now look back, they see their footprints that have been imprinted throughout each of these schools. So we now close the yearbook on page 104 with the footprints poem hoping that each of the classes following may leave as good of an impression. Under the guidance of coaches Ed Curzon and Nelson Snowden, the Varsity Hornets ended the season at 4-4. At midseason the mighty Hornets were 4-1 and one of the hottest teams in the area. The final three games were heart-breakers; the Hornets lost the first two by two and the final game, against Havana, by fourteen. The Junior Varsity season, boasting a record of 3-2, and the Freshman with a 1-2 record, showed the potential of future Hornet football teams. Good luck to those future teams and may they continue V.l.T.'s winning Guys, tackle the other team! tradition. 19 Tackle by Darren with 'Ned' on guard VOLLEY Left to Right-Coach Rosie Evans, ackie Bunge, Sara Wallace, Kathy Robinson, Cindy Baum, Melissa Thome, Shelly Woods, Amy Birch. The 1984 Volleyball season this year has been both memorable and successful for both teams. A special thanks goes to Miss Evans for putting up with us all these years and for taking on the job no one else wanted, with a smile. We will always remember those attitude talks that everyone got one time or another and that famous saying, That's History . We know it hasn't been easy ... thanks. Our enthusiasm and participation as a team made for many enjoyable practices and games. We had our ups and downs, good games and bad, but we always seemed to work together at just the right times. The season over-all has been quite successful with both squads placing second in the WAC Conference and the Varsity receiving third in the County Tournament. But the one victory that will stand out in our minds is the defeat of Industry during their senior night. Good Luck next year. After a 0-3 start, the season finally bounced and swished to a very rewarding finish. After a surprising 2nd place in the Havana Holiday Tournament, the Hornets rebounded with another second place trophy at the Fulton County Tournament. The Hornet's charged to a grand Finale, capturing the WAC conference with a 6-0 record. The team felt the season was stimulating as well rewarding, with a final record of 19-8. Taking into account a transitional year at the coaching position and losing one of our best players to the varsity, it was a fairly good year. Though our team finished at only 3-3 in WAC, we will always remember the unbelievable comeback against Meredosia. We also placed second in both the County and the VIT invitational. This year we beat the tough teams and lost to the easy teams. The team was led by Seniors Kevin Cowin and Keith Pilger, built around Juniors Todd Snowden, Tim Bair and Darren Churchill and provided with hope for the future with Steve Fawcess and Neal Horwedel. The future of the V.l.T. baseball team is in good hands with the good young talent in the team and the coaching prowess of Norm Miller. Softball team gave their best this year, even though they didn't have a winning season. The pitching was very good this year with Lisa Kaufman for Varsity and Jackie Bunge for the JV. Hopefully next year we will end up with a better season record' even though we will miss the seniors, Francie Shank, Jeanne Branson, Chris Beans, Brenda Porter, and Martina Kaufmann, who helped the team out in many different ways. One of our most exciting games was against Beardstown, when we put up a great fight and it took them ten innings to finally beat us. The future looks real positive with the coaching experience of Miss Evans. We'd all like to thank her a lot for her time and effort this year. Written by — Lisa Kaufman • -T SoTtKn ZL Susan K. Rock'in around the Christmas Tree' MANDY A special'' thanks goes to our sponsor, Mrs. Snowden. Without her help and guidance we would not have accomplished everything that we did this year. HIGH SCHOOL CHEERLEADERS Cheerleading! This year's (1984-85) season began following tryouts last spring. From May till March, we practiced, performed, and rallied. This summer we attended UCA Cheerleading camp at WIU. Some of us chose to spend the week on campus, while others chose to commute. Four days of working out, dancing, cheering, and a lot of sweating, prepared us for a memorable season ahead. We learned new cheers, chants, partner stunts, pyramids, a line dance, 2 dance routines, and tips on school spirit, unity, and pep rallies. We also met some new friends and gained a Big Brother , Louis, our camp director. This year the Varsity Cheerleaders assisted the JV squad at the JV Football games. The combination of both squads established a sense of unity among the Cheerleaders. We also tried another new idea, SOCK HOPS! The Sock Hops proved successful and gave the students a chance to boogie in a more relaxed atmosphere. In addition to the numerous changes this year, we were privileged to have Mrs. Young as a sponsor. Mrs. Young was more than a sponsor, she was our friend. One might think we had 13 Cheerleaders this season, counting Mrs. Young. Her patience and creativity were a major asset to the squad, and were greatly appreciated by the girls. In conclusion, we'd like to thank Mrs. Young, and wish her and the future squads of V.l. T. lots of luck! HIGH SCHOOL CHEERLEADERS ORGANIZATIONS The Student Council sponsored several projects this year — many of them new to V.l. T. We sponsored the Homecoming Dance on Sept. 29 and sent representatives to the District Workshop in Quincy and the District meeting in Bloomington. The Student Council purchased a Christmas tree and decorated the lobby. We had German Night Feb. 7 featuring our exchange student Martina Kaufmann. On March 21 we invited several area colleges and universities to inform students about career opportunities. The Student Council sponsored two assemblies, an impersonator and a mime. We purchased a stage curtain for the back of the stage to replace the old one and installed a Sun-Glo juice machine. The Student Council was successful with their projects this year and we hope next year's Student Council prospers also. The public responded with much concern, coming up with an idea of accepting band as an extra-curricular activity for the students. The Board ok'd this with much concern of students not accepting and or responding to this new solution. The Band students parent's organized a group to raise funds for the Teacher, instruments, contest, transportation to concerts and or contests and music. This group is called the Music Arts Program. M.A.P. has taken this responsiblity on single handed. With officers Pres. Judy Mugrage, V. Pres. Gordon Reedy, Sect. Ruth Sparks, and Tres. Clara Kay Thompson, this group has held together fine. Their money making projects consisted of Chicken Fry's, Fulton County Fair, Dunk Tank, Yard Sales, Musical Plays, and sold Socks with a Hornet on them. This group has made it possible for the Band to have fun while learning. The group found ways for us to march in local parades, participate in the Community Concert, enjoy an afternoon in Peoria listening to the symphony, participate in contest, and play during Homecoming and all Home Games. Each of these activities we participated in was an enjoyment for all members and the group support was very much appreciated throughout the entire year. The workshops, long afternoons, and late nights are proving to be worth all our effort and strain. Many new ideas are being put to use this year: Jr. High sport pages and graduation were added, a new style of advertising and Seniors in sports have their own pages. The 1984-85 Vitorian has had a half of a signature added, increasing Tammy (Editor) and Chris Lisa K. and Angie B. the number of pages in the yearbook. More time than ever has been given to the production of the Vitorian. Without the help and support of four great ladies this annual would not have been printed. We would like to say THANK YOU to Mrs. Burton, Clara Kay, Donna Farr, and Katherine Miller. Each one put up with the arguments and disagreements of the three editors. THANKS AGAIN for all the time and concern you've given us and the 84-85 Vitorian. Editors: Jeanne Branson, Tammy Engel, Glenda Thompson. 42 DANCES HOMECOMING VA.T. At 6:30 the meal was served which included: salad, ham or turkey, mashed potatos, gravy, corn, green beans, rolls and pie. Many teachers and board members enjoyed the meal and decorations as well as the students. The dance started at 7:30 and everyone began to BOOGIE. We received our class rings like all sophomores get and most of us got our drivers license like all sophomores do. This class is made up of a bunch of crazy, wild animals and it will be crazier and wilder during the next two years, so watch out for the zoo of 87'. P.S. We, the mighty class of '85, entered our Senior year with the thrill of finally being Seniors. We began by electing officers: President — Phil Keefauver, Vice President — Keith Pilger. Secretary — Dee Craft, Treasurer — Rod Malott, and Reporter — Barb Vincent. With the help of our sponsors, Mrs. Young and Mr. Schoenwetter, we organized a chili supper to raise money for the long-awaited class trip. Another highlight of the year was ordering our Graduation Announcements and Senior Keys. Our Senior Year brings much anticipation, but also much confusion. After Graduation, we will be stepping out into a world that we can only hope is ready for us and vice versa. Some of us will continue with our schooling, some will get jobs, and some will try marriage. One thing is for certain, whatever happens to the Class of '85 after Graduation, we will retain the memories we have accumulated during our years at V. I. T. We realize with the sad parting of special friends that we have spent the past 72 years filled with many happy memories which will be remembered throughout our life. 82 Kevin Cow in Deirdre Craft 83 f Phil Keefauver Brian Lannery Erin Lawver Rod Malott Missy Miller Susan Keller Danny Lotz 87 SENIOR CLASS A CCOM PL ISHM EN TS JOE AUGUGLIARO — FFA — 7; Band — 7, 2; Football — 7; SUPER SENIOR!
