In the past, we thought getting through school as quick as possible was the most important accomplishment, but now we realize our high school years were very important and the most carefree times of our lives. The enjoyable years here at VIT have left everlasting memories and friendship that, wherever we may be, will endure forever. BURTON This 1981-82 Vitorian is dedicated to Mrs. Elizabeth Burton, a very special lady, who has given a great deal of effort and added extraordinary class to our organization. Her unique way of organizing the Annual Staff while simultaneously coping with the many problems faced year after year by the members were appreciated, although our gratitude was rarely shown. Many times people tend to take others for granted without realizing how fortunate we are to be associated with them. Mrs. Burton unselfishly devoted her time to supervise the production of several fine yearbooks. Mrs. Burton contributed her own personal time in order to better the Annual Staff. Although you deserve much more, Mrs. Burton, we hope that you will accept this small token of our appreciation. Memories of Annual Staff will always be cherished because of you, Mrs. Burton. THANKS FOR ALL THE GREAT MEMORIES MRS. BURTON!!!!!!! 17 OUR TEACHERS V I T IRIVE SKdENT DRIVER We made it again! We’re the pick of the crop Another case solved. By tackling English III and American History in the same year, we found ourselves extremely busy with homework assignments not to mention our many other activities. Because of the financial crunch, we all participated in two money making projects: selling soap dispensers and graduate year key chains, earned extra cash for our biggest project, the Jr-Sr Prom. We soon realized the endless complications tied in with Prom. Trying to keep to our budget and pleasing everyone can not be accomplished at the same time. Aside from ail of the headaches, we managed to produce a beautiful pastel blue and orchid Prom to the theme of “Endless Love” A few of us, trying to bring out our talented acting skills, participated in the Junior Class Play. We all had fun presenting “The Girl Next Door,” even if we did exchange a few words among ourselves. Aside from our bad moods, we managed to present a humorous play. After surviving the struggles of our Junior year, we are all ready to experience the challenges of our Senior year at V.I.T. Everything’s different than our Freshman year. The halls don’t seem so crowded, more people have become friendlier and teachers more humane, and we are now more familiar with our surrounding. We no longer seem to be at the bottom and insignificant because we are now SOPHOMORES To raise money for our class treasury we sold magazines. The class on a whole managed to raise $3801.22. There were times when everyone was about ready to give it all up. People lost checks and order blanks were filled out wrong. Then Driver’s Ed came along. Driver’s permits were issued and everyone started driving. “WATCH OUT!” It wasn’t long before some received their Driver’s licenses. Watch the trash cans and mausoleums!! Everybody was excited about ordering their class ring. We almost drove Mrs. Daily crazy with all of our questions. Finally the day came to order. Then all of the questions of when they would arrive started. Mrs. Daily managed to come through it all reasonably sane, (although we tried our worst), and on March 18 we receive our class rings. by Crystal Palmer Bill Abernathy, Samantha Beans, Carl Beebe, Cari Belden, Charlie Boggs, Kelly Butcher, Anita Creasy, Janice Creasy, Rob Danner, Peg Dennis, Missy Durga, Tim Engle, Doug Goodell, Keith Hadsall, Eric Hickie, Kenny Holloway, Regina Howell, Brenda Kenderick, Jan Kepple, Denise LaFary, Doug Lidwell, Brenda Little, Teresa Martin, Joyce Miller, Crystal Palmer, Robin Palmer, Tana Parsano, Brian Pilger, Rita Richey, Ruth Riggins, Angie Schisler, Carol Shoemate, Becky Sigler, Roy Slater, Lori Taylor, Mona Weld, Joe Wherley, Paula Worthington President: Phil Vice-President: Secretary: Lisa Treasurer: Ro c Not knowing wl; other times Engel i school was like, this year has been full of many surprises, sometimes pleasant, and The added activities, such as and goals. basketball, club organizations ect' provided new challenges One of the newest experiences for us was the fund raising project, which was to sell candy. Even without a playoff bid in 1981, The VIT Hornets had a very respectable 7-3 season. It was a year marked with disappointments, 4th quarter rallies, some exciting football. But most of all it was a group of young men who displayed character. A group of young athletes who, when faced with adversity after adversity, kept their heads high and desires strong when quiting seemed an easier route. I consider myself extremely fortunate to have been able to coach this group for 3 years and watch boys grow into men with qualities anyone would be proud of. Mr. O’Flaherty This years football squad enjoyed a successful and exciting season, finishing with a, respectable mark of 7-3. The teams 3 loses came at the hands of three state playoff qualifiers; Havana, Pleasant Hill, and Virginia. This Years team was lacking in personal but more than made up for it with heart. We were proud to be the co-captains on this years’ team. thank you Dave Snowden, Danny Chambers, and Tony Snowden. 35 Angie and Doug Tricia, Doug, and Kate 7 VOLLEYBALL left to right: Marisa Cox, Wendi Howard, Tammy Palm, Rosie Evans, Cari Belden, Tari Willison, Kelli Howard, and Jeanne Branson Even though the 1981 volleyball season for the varsity wasn’t superb, we had a lot of fun. Whether we won or lost, didn’t really matter as long as we participated and played as a team. There were some bad times but not half as many as there were good. We hope that next years’ team will have as good a time playing as we did. Good luck girls!!! The story begins when Rhon, Pam and Cyn went to get wood for the bon-fire their Junior year at Cyn’s farm. Under the wood we came upon three attractive but used plungers. The next evening, we were surprised to find the plungers still in the back of the truck. So instead of taking pom-poms to the game we took the Plungers. The fans were startled to see us girls carrying such odd things at a football game. Everyone seemed to like the idea so we decorated them and continued to bring them to every game. Cyn, Rhon, and Pam hope that someone will carry the tradition as “PROUDLY” as we did and that the Plunger Girls will live on forever. I would like to express our sincere gratitude and appreciation to Mrs. Knowles for her patience and guidance. Also, we’d like to thank Mrs. Farr for her help with the Financing on the yearbook. Without their assistance the 1982 yearbook would not have been possible. The Annual Staff has worked very hard to raise enough money to put together the 1982 yearbook. We have had cake raffles, bake sales on the Spoon River Drive, concessions at grade school basketball games and we have sold patrons. A special thanks goes to Cynthia T., Rhonda K., Pam L., Cindy L., Tony R., Reta W., Brian P., Brenda K., Teresa M., Debbie B., Marisa C., Kelly K., Dan C., Crystal P., Dave F., Robin P., who have worked so hard to put this yearbook together. Most of us were new to the staff, but we worked hard to get our pages in on time and we enjoyed every minute of it. The school is in a sad situation so we wish all the classes the best of luck and hope if they get the chance to have a yearbook, they will enjoy making the future ones as much as we did. We of the Annual Staff hope that you enjoy this yearbook and the memories it holds. By — Rhonda Kendrick N U A L S T A F F Cyn’s Fantasy! Huddle! “The Couch’ Congratulation Baby you can drive my car! The teams were involved in many exciting matches against tough competitors. Our teams had respectable campaigns in this years games. For two weeks we partook in the hazzards and pleasures of teaching the elementary students. In the beginning we were all dreading being placed in the front of a class room full of grade schoolers; however, as days past and we became better acquainted with the kids it became a pleasure. As days went by we became more comfortable with the kids and we came to look forward to going to the elementary school. What started out to be a frightening and unsure experience turned into something we all didn’t want to see end. The two weeks ended in festivity, however, when the kids threw all of their student teachers a party. I think we all agree that the experience is one none of us would have missed. In the Spring of 1981, with School Board approval, the Boosters’ assumed the financial responsibilities for all sports. This included coaches salaries and school paid retirement, officials, supplies and equipment, phone calls and postage, Western Area Conference (W.A.C.) dues, School Masters dinner meetings, IHSA and IESA membership, tournament fees, and all transpartation mileage (drivers when needed). Along with the financial expenses people donated their time for scorekeeping, timekeeping, announcing, chain crews, ticket sales, officiating, bus driving, ambulance attendants, scheduling of workers, concession stand workers and much clean-up, bookkeeping and treasury work for the ATHLETIC REVOLVING FUND and parental transportation. Donations and pledges from parents, Booster Members and members of our community initiated a sports program that was to be comparable to previous years at V.I.T. The year included many fund-raising projects and every attempt proved to be successful with organized planning, efficient committees and HARD WORK. Motivation, a key factor, was necessary with so much to plan and complete. The athletic program required patience and understanding, changes with objectivity and many goals. Dedication, involvement and determination rendered an outstanding year with a state trophy, team progress, healthy attitudes and community co-operation. THE COMMUNITY SPIRIT FOR V.I.T. IS GREAT!!
