Our passing offense totaled over 1000 yds in the air. Our defense was not consistant this year, however they did play good defense in the homecoming game vs Industry and in the last game vs Astoria. The highlight of our season was the homecoming victory. The toughest loss was the triple overtime loss to Bluffs. Despite numerous injuries, the fresh-soph football team had a highly successful season, finishing with a 7-1 record. They defeated all the conference foes, which enabled them to lay claim to the WAC championship. The Hornets were led by a high powered offensive attack which gained 263 yds per game, while scoring 24.3 pts per contest. The offense was under the command of freshman QB Brian Hadsall. Leading the offensive charges were sophomore halfbacks Doug Easley and Marion White, who gained 1381 yds (15 TDS) and 450 yds (5 TDS) respectively. Adding to the rushing game were freshmen Dave Snowden who gained 293 yds while tossing 8 TD passes, and Bryan Swift, who gained 189 yds on the ground. Providing the running room for the backs were offensive linemen Chris Heitz-center, Cliff Miller, Jay Pittman Tony Snowden-guards, Scott Azbell and Bill Churchill- tackles, Jackie Fouts and Von Saufley- ends. The Hornets defense complimented the offense well by holding the opponents to 9.6 pts per contest. Outstanding performances were turned in by def. end Ed Yocum, linebacker Rich Noe, and def. backs Scott Fawcett and Marlin White. Many of the players were called upon to play both offense and defense. Congratulations on a job well done. Early in the year, we elected class officers. They were Von Saufley — Reporter, Sheri Roberts — Treasurer, Cindy Malott — Secretary, Marion White — Vice President, and Charla Jockisch — President. We sold magazines to raise money for our class fund. Debby Mohn was added to our class this year. For Homecoming we decorated the cafeteria. Marjorie Demott and Doug Easley were picked as our attendants for the dance. We ordered our class rings in November, and got them in March. It seems like we waited forever! This year was really fun, and most of us can't wait until we are Juniors. The new year was welcomed by approximately 6 in. of snow that extended our vacation bv two days. All toll we missed 9 days of school. But that wasn't the only snow that fell. We had approximately 54 in. of snow, which is a new record. We also received the coldest winter on record. 54 inches is a lot of snow!! Most kids that live in the country know that. Most of them were snowed in the snow was so deep that they had to borrow machines from the mine to get them out. On the other hand people that went away were stranded and couldn't get to their homes. But Mother Nature wasn't finished with us vet. We also had a record amount of rain fall. This sure has been a year for records. Let's hope it continues and we have a record amount of sunshine!! Everyone was a little apprehensive at first but the ice was broken after a few moments and everything was great. We had a wonderful time while they were here. The girls just loved to shop. While they were here, as a group they visited WIU, Navoo, Chicago and went to many other places with their families. They left for Duisburg on April 25th. Now all we can do is write letters and in time even those will dwindle. But we'll always have our memories of three weeks spent making another person happy, and being happy in return. The elementary staff and students were anxious to usher in the 1978-79 school year in our new elementary school building. Not only was our building new but most of its furnishings were new as well. It gave everyone an extra boost to start the year. As with all new things it had small problems, but we were able to work through them. The media center did not operate for some time after school started due to delays in the manufacturing of its furnishings. Since Gary Bradford its completion in the fall, it has been used constantly by our students. Of special note are the many new and meaningful experiences with the video tape recorder in the media center and classrooms. The building has helped to provide a better place for learning and children to develope. We are thankful to so many whose efforts and cooperation have helped to provide this facility for the children of our school district. Kenny Lascellas Bill Pilger 57 Who get's the tackle? r M(u .... The previous and present Annual Staff at V.l.T. would like to take this time to thank a very special lady that has given of her time and effort to make the Staff a good one. Mrs. Knowles graduated from Evenstown Township High School. She attended the U of I, Monmouth College and graduated from W.I.U. in 1961 as an English major. She taught at Ellisville Jr. High one year, Industry High two years, and has been here at V.l.T. ever since. Mrs. Knowles contributed of herself for many years in order to better the Annual and Staff and we do recognize and appreciate it. This is the reason the yearbook is dedicated to you, Mrs. Knowles. There was a time when you were here in which you made yourself a place: In our lives. Your memory has left us with a bitter, sweet twinge. The laughter and the tears, even the happy makes us sad. We try so very, very hard to erase the memories, because they bring floods of hurt and a feeling of helplessness for something that is beyond our undoing. Feelings of bitterness and grief Because we are often too selfcen-tered to be happy and fulfilled with what we had. The trouble started when the bus driver couldn't find the Museum of Science and Industry and accidentally knocked over a baracade on Lake Shore Drive. From then on in, it was downhill! The bus driver couldn't find the town in which we were supposed to stay - let alone the Motel! Breakfast Sunday morning was a long time coming. We traveled 41 miles before the bus driver found his way back to the motel for directions to MacDonalds-2 blocks away! All in all you could tell the bus driverwas good by the skill and smoothness he used when he shifted gears. There were a lot of nice things about the trip: from the taxi drivers to the Naval officers; from room service to obscene-but consistant(l) phone calls and from the police to the bus seats. But too, the trip was fun and it was nice to be home, even if we were two hours late. We will remember our senior class trip for a long time. In all seriousness, with our advisor Mrs. Burton, we did accomplish some things. We managed to capture some of the lighter sides of school life. We hope you'll enjoy this yearbook as much as we enjoyed utting it together for you! By Lauri KiIIion Lori Horwedel Lauri Roberts-editor Errin and Lauri Steph, Gary.
