“
Our Story” Vitorian 1972 In recognition of 9 years service to V.l.T. 1963-1972 Mr. Eldon Wickline Education is a companion which no misfortune can depress, no crime can destroy, no enemy can alienate, no despotism can enslave. At home a friend, abroad an introduction, in solitude a solace, and in society an ornament. It chastens vice, it guides virtue, it gives, at once, grace and government to genius. Without it, what is man? A splendid slave, a reasoning savage. 2 Joseph Addison Our Story” Begins Here SENIORS VU ,'U' Senior Class Officers President: Vice-President: Secretary: Treasurer: Reporter: John Pittman Steve Robertson Myra McMillen Jerry Hollenback Sandy Morrison DID IT ALL REALLY HAPPEN THAT FAST? As freshmen we entered these dreamed of classrooms and found out that we dreamed bad dreams. Instead of stepping up from 8th grade, a freshman is actually a step down. So we began our long, hard trek to freedom; fighting through mobs of mean Seniors and rough classes. Most of us made it that first year, though, and we even had time to sell a little candy. The next year began quite a bit differently, and for once in a long time, (so it seemed), we could look down upon somebody. We became active in many outside activities during our Sophomore year and even broke records in our magazine sales. Our Junior year started out well and finished that way. Class rings were received, tried on, traded, and spun, causing considerable dilemma. However, we learned many new things through our experiences and gained knowledge from our failures as well as our successes. As Juniors we handled basketball concessions, put on a class play and gave a Prom to the outgoing Seniors. Seniors at last, well, it had finally come, from the gutters of high school to the throne at the top. We, as Seniors, became victims of the old familiar disease, Senioritis, and though we weren't through high school, we were close enough to taste the end. Still we carried some responsibility; we took care of football concessions, again put on a class play, went to a very nice prom and planned and executed a fine outing to Chicago. Looking back, maybe we could say, Did it really all happen that fast? 6 CVt'tl ms t)aufbr jWU 3Fs2 L ( l -’ Class Flower: umeught Glad f. t -OA Class Motto: At the top and still climbing. « Being Themselves The different clubs and organizations of V. I. T. need leaders who are trustworthy and competent and who have a certain quality of leadership. But the saying goes: All work and no play made Jack a dull boy so we caught a few leaders just being themselves to show that having fun is not a lost art in the halls and classrooms of V. I. T. Within the confines of classroom walls, they are frequently disguised as mild-mannered students but once let loose they begin to take on a whole new shape and form. A long, last look launched upon these empty halls, brings forth in all of us a feeling of remorse. Yet, above it all a feeling of pride, forwarded by our small yet subtly substantia! accomplishments proves, that we like many, value our personal ideals and motives. Many times in the previous few short years, we have reminisced upon onr gains and failures, forwarded our dreams and goals and wondered about the future. By now we no longer wonder, but stare in awe; ibr we ha ve become a part of the future, our dreams have become a 8fm reality. Life is ahead of us, but a great part has already left us; for we, in these last few years, have committed to our memories many moments of sorrow, of joy, of success and failure, of times of being toother for a common goal; and above all, we have been with friends, not only our classmates and other students, but faculty, persons who were and are interested in us as human beings and not only as a product of their efforts. However, we cannot rest upon our accomplishments, for thdre is much yet in our lives to attempt. We have barely scratched the surface of life's enormous store of knowledge and opportunity. And we cannot waste this great gift, available for our taking, if we just will take it. For us there is only the future, to make of what we wish and for how much we are willing to give. As we leave, we cannot dwejr in the past, bift rather.use the knowledge we gained: to sav in our own small way FAREWELL. , ■ ilHIM FACULTY Mrs. Webb A new teacher in Biology came However she was one and the same. Just a change to her name was made But alas, from the halls she didn't fade. Still teaching the Science to the class All the way from Osmosis to Bass. 28 Mr. Inman Mr. Inman blessed with brains Knows the formula to stop a train. Along with the others that are known From a rolling wheel to a falling stone. Known ore the school and afar He even drives a MoPar car. Any topic has had his discern Under Mr. Inman you will learn. 29 Mr. Snowden In the fall, starting in August Watching the boys running in dust. Hoping soon for some rain, Maybe to ease the ankle pain. Teaching his classes through the day, Calmly waiting the game they play. In the winter diligently waiting, All the while, constitution stating Then at last Spring arrives, Mr. Snowden the track boys drives. Till at last the season's gone And his classes all are done. So ends a year for Mr. Snowden. Mrs. Knowles From the sound of the clipity-clop And the place where it stops You can soon deduce From these interesting clues That it's the fairest of them all Standing straight and tall Beating English into their heads Till at last they wish for death Of course you know by now Who the one is that takes the bow Mrs. Knowles wonders of all wonders Who strikes all ignorance asunder. 32 Mrs. Adair Mrs. Adair leads the way, Teaching her classes day by day. But alas, she was gone And Mrs. Snowden got the job done Soon arrives the day of her return Again to teach the students to learn. Now the crisis has faded away, Mrs. Adair is back, hooray. 33 Mrs. Dailey Mrs. Dailey quick and wit With the plays, she's a hit Freshmen and Sophomore Fjiglish is her bag Teaching the children Tip and Tag Seriously Mrs. Dailey is a lot of fun And There's not another under the sun. 34 Mrs. Brummet Mrs. Brummet is one who is known All over the school, by the least and the best By those who are up, and those who are down It's really a wonder the school is so blest For she is not only the one who teaches Home Ec. But also the one who conducts a Sophomore homeroom She helps the girls to get on the stick The stick is meant to be the broom Seriously she'd be hard to replace For it would be hard without her sweet face. 35 Mrs. Hughes Teaching Math throughout the day, Saving minds along the Way, Showing youth the way Math leads, Altho some pay her no heed, The ones that do succeed, And pleasant lives they lead. Now and then they stop to think, How life would be? What would they see? Without Mrs. Hughes to add the missing link, To help them swim and not to sink. 36 Mr. Shoenwetter There he is flashing a smile, Helping someone for a little while, Giving you tests or giving you scores, Even preventing a few paper airplane wars, Teaching the Sophomores the birds and bees, Or telling the Seniors about college fees, His presence here is like a guiding light, Mr. Shoenwetter is a blessing on this accursed site 1 Mr. Hunter Mr. Hunter, an all around guy, Helps you out and never asks why. Teaches everything from welding to Ag. And prods the ones who want to lag. Keeps the students on their toes Saying Hello wherever he goes. And as you all will probably agree Uncle Ralph is as cool as can be. 38 Mr. Bradford Day after day, a trip from the school Day after day, wielding a tool. Helping young carpenters learn a trade, Even the chance for earning a grade. This is the job of one who you know, For when you talk, he bends over low. Of course you all can tell from the words, That of course it is Mr. Bradford. 39 The symbols above represent the girls physical education program, the G. A. A., and the cheerleading squad. These symbols also represent the person who is the teacher and advisor to these organizations. This person is Miss Rozella Evans. Miss Evans This was Miss Evans's first year of teaching at V. I. T. and since it was her first year there was some adjusting to be done both by students and teacher. For the students it has meant getting demerits for not wearing bobby socks, learning new and exciting ways of playing football and basketball, and getting use to the aroma of hot coffee at the beginning of each class. For Miss Evans it has meant a slow but gradual transition from the sane to the not quite so sane. Right? But putting all kidding aside, we are very proud and pleased to have Miss Evans at V. I. T. as a teacher. It is always nice to see new and young faces anywhere you go but when one of these is her here to help you learn it is most likely to be a greatly rewarding experience. So from the Seniors who have had you only this one year we say good bye and good luck next year you'll need it! Mr. Connour Mr. Toland Mr. Connour and Mr. Toland are just two of the forces behind the V. I. T. athletic program. Besides athletics, Mr. Connour and Mr. Toland have teaching positions at V. I. T. Mr. Connour teaches Physical Education adn Driver's Education. He also has a Freshman home room. This year Mr. Connour became a member of an elite group of coaches by winning his 300th basketball game. Mr. Toland has a Physical Education class plus other duties in the Jr. High. His Junior Varsity basketball team had an 11 and 9 season of which he is very proud. These two men should be congratulated for the fine job they do at V. I. T. , both in the class room and on the playing floor. Chorus Mrs. Lucie kind and sweet Teaching young birdies how to tweet. Always a smiling face she bears Though different sets of hair she wears. A thorough job she always does Even when teaching two different choruses. SAA and SAB trying hard to do her will And Madrigal hardly keeping still. For a concert never late And then alas where's 48? 42 Mr Flying up the stairs to band With a baton in his hand. Though as hard as he may try He's often late and doesn't know why. In the fall, the wind has a chill But he marches his troops over the hill. Never are his labors lost Because at halftime the band is boss. Even in the winter he strains To get the band ready for basketball games. Sometimes his life will suffer a blow Then his good-natured smile will go. But without them, this school would be at a very serious loss. These people, the cooks, the janitors, the bus drivers, and the secretaries, play an important role in the furtherance of our education. 50 ACTIVITIES VITorian Staff —1972 Editor. .. We must congradulate this organization and its members on a fine year. 56 F.H.A FIRST ROW L TO R: Georgia Johnson, Connie Wright, Teresa Waller, Linda Perkins, Barbara Fawcett, Sandy Morrison, Paula Sherwood, Jane Wherley, Margo Bubb, Karen VanFossen, Sandy Copes. People's lives have mingled and separated, We remember times when they've loved and dated. The bonfire comes on the eve of our game, Our players are cheered onto glory and fame. Spirits mount as time progresses, Winner of the game? There are many guesses. The night of the game is finally here, V.I.T. wins and the fans all cheer. Homecoming dance is the finest of all. With all the grandeur of a queen's ball. Homecoming is the blending of old and new faces. A momentary joining of lives at different paces. Under their guidance, the Junior class accomplished a variety of activities. The class was well represented during V.I.T.'s fall homecoming when Karen VanFossen and Dan Farr were voted attendents. Money making projects included a chile supper during homecoming and the class play Our Hearts were Young and Gay. April 29, 1972 was the date of the Junior-Senior Prom given by the Juniors. It was entitled A Time For Us, a splendid finale to the high school years of the 1972 Senior class. 94 A. Burgess K. Cable D. Chenoweth E. Colston G. Abernathy R. Baker T. Barrett M. Beans G. We elected these officers for the year as follows: President- Aaron Perkins, Vice-President- Gerry Cassidy, Secretary- Jamell Harris. Treasurer- Liz Marshall, Reporter- Linda Horwedel. The first activity we had was selling magazines to earn money. This turned out to be a great success. But this wasn t the most exciting thing to happen. This was the year to get our license. During this time Mr. Connour was to get thrilled, chilled and otherwise bored to sleep. All in all though, he came through it alright. We ordered our class rings and started to consider ourselves upperclassmen. All this will help the class of 74 be remembered. 98 K. Carithers G. Cassidy D. Danner D. Douglas L. Easley M. Engel T. It took courage and a lot of nerve, but we've done it! We've made it through our freshman year! Now that it's over we can look back on all the fun we had. We sold candy to make money. We supported the Hornets at all the games. We even got off easy with no initiation! For the first time we feel as if we are really a part of V. I. T. The squad brought back the district trophy by defeating Lewistown 18-17. They were defeated in the sectional by one point by Barton-ville. We can be grateful for the hard work these young boys have shown in this sport. The experience they have gained in these Jr. High years will help them to become athletes of tomorrow. 112 Jr. High Basketball Lightweight BACK ROW (L. TO R. ) Mr. Miller (coach) R. Parks J. Even though the heavyweights didn't compile such an impressive win-loss record as the lightweights did, they made up for it in their spirit and determination to play the game as best they could. These boys learned the fundamentals of the game (shooting, passing, offense, and defense), how to cooperate (passing to the open man and not being a ball hog), and how to win and lose with pride in knowing that they had done their best. Most of these players will enter High School and make up a good part of it's Jr. Varsity basketball team next year. We would like to take this time to congratulate them on a fine effort these last two years and wish them the best of luck for their remaining four years in High School sports. About the lightweights, it can be said that they had a very good season for they rolled up 11 wins and 8 losses. Two of their most noteable accomplishments include 2nd place finishes in County and District Tournaments. Both of these games were lost by very slim margins. The boys gave up many other after-school activities to stay and practice basketball besides loosing hours of sleep because of before-school practices in the mornings. They soon learned that you don't become a good player over night. Mr. Miller and the two basketball teams should be congratulated for representing the V. I. T. Jr. High sports department so well this year. 115 FRONT TO BACK: Sarah Wood, Amy Hudson, Tracey Willison, Marla Jones. FRONT: Susan Schisler, Juanita Kendrick. LEFT: Annette Bubb.
