The Flagpole boasted a new addition, and the classrooms once again were filled with students. While the boys began the first practices, the bleachers eagerly awaited that first, big football game. Smiling faces appeared at the lunch tables and frowning ones over the books in the new study hall. The Seniors made it known right from the beginning that “70” was the best ever! With the sound of slamming locker doors and shouts, pep assemblies and cheers, and the old familiar homework, we can really say that the school scene has arrived! 4 ‘ ‘ Zlie English “Dept. Mrs. Knowles: English III College English Yearbook Advisor Speech • Journalism 6 ' ‘Science formulates the Future Math ■MB The mathematics classes have been taught to see problem solving in various ways-the pre-algebra students concentrated on learning patterns and were surprised to see how these patterns fit so many situations. The Algebra I students learned to translate English sentences into equations for solving problems. The Algebra 11 students spent much time reviewing their Algebra I and got acquainted with a bit of Trigonometry. Fourth year math students had to dust off all math they had learned in the past and began to realize how algebra, geometry, trig, and analytics are inter-dependent, and believe it or not— interesting. Stimulates Reasoning Homemaking is an art which helps the student learn to become an efficient wife and mother and possibly combine this with the world ot work. Included in these skills are childcare, consumer buying, food preparation and serving, clothing construction. housing and home furnishing and family relationship. guilds for the Jut me 11 business The aim of the business education department is to prepare students to enter the world of the business office. The Senior business student finds himself in Office Practice which consists of skills learned in typing. Some apparently weren’t satisfied because the girls and boys kept exchanging rings. With the expert leadership of our class officers; President—Mike Martin, Vice-president—Wendell Willison, Secretary—Jill Engel, and Treasurer—Jill Wherley we made prom plans which soon materialized into “Moonlight and Roses”. We had an impressive list of sponsors head by Miss Brown. As a class, the year brought PSAT and National Merit exams which were accompanied by the moans and groans of flustered students who realized they had paid money to take the hardest tests of their lives. With a puff of smoke we rushed into basketball concessions, in which nearly every member of our class got a chance to help eat up the profits. On the daily scene, we had many cork-popping times as the Mad-bombers terrorized chemistry class. In English III we tried and failed at progressive education, met Bubblegum Barbara and Pickle Polly, and hear Transcendentalism; Can it really work? Along with earth-shattering happenings in American History, we met Ralph the 600 pound invisible rabbit. The Shop boys had many interesting and educational talks with Mr. Bradford, while the Ag. boys strived to build a better hog trough. The Home-ec girls strived to be better cooks and better homemakers. One of the highlights of the year was the “shoeing” of Dian by Betsy. It was a year of firsts, our first prom, our first play, and our first ulcer. We look back on the year with a laugh, a smile, and a barely impressed groan as we wait for next year when we will be “Mighty Seniors”. Class of “72 No longer intimidated, we entered our 2nd year of high school with enthusiasm. Our mighty class was led by President, Ray Goodell; Vice-President, Steve Robertson; Secretary, Shiela Wooddell; Treasurer, John Pittman; Reporter, Myra McMillen. Our sponsors were Mrs. Cary and Mr. Hunter. And there are many moments to remember . . . 8th Hour Home-Ec., when Mr. Inman came in and admired Rhonda’s unfinished pant-skirt while she was modeling it. Industrial Arts boys, Remember when Jim Ragan’s sander got away from Him? We, the mighty class of “72” broke all previous magazine sale records! During the winter many diets were started, What happened to all of them girls??? Early February we made a very important decision about our class rings. First-aid, when Leslie got into a rather uncomfortable situation when someone put a splint on his broken (?) leg. First hour P.E. girls were always coming up minus a few clothes. Spring began and so did many new romances, like the time Jobie fell for Glenn in 7th hour study hall. As the days got warmer many cases of spring fever sprang up and a few very long naps, almost too long, right Bob? Mr. Wickline continued to give 8th hour English much good advice like “Get busy!” Steve Robertson spent all year trying to get Mrs. Dailey to give him dancing lessons, without success!! All in all it was a really groovy year for the Super Sophs!!! 44 L. Glover R. Goodell K. Groff R. Heller , t L J. Easley B. Fawcett J. Forgy D. Galliher M. Hickle J. Hollenback E. Huett K. Johnson M. Not only do the boys in sports put in a lot of work and time to make Hornets the best, but also their managers. The basketball and football managers are required to attend all workouts and practices. They are the boys our athletes rely upon for words of encouragement when the going gets rough: they are in charge of the first-aid bag, towels, and equipment. Without them, we wouldn’t have a team. The sport’s announcer is in charge of obtaining the line-ups for both V.I.T. and our opponent’s team. He must attend all home games, see that the flags are in place, set up the microphone, and announce the line-ups. Thank you, Glenn, for a job well done! The student secretaries also deserve a lot of credit. They collect absentee slips each hour and make up the absence list for the day. Along with this, they do many odd jobs for Mr. Cary, teachers, and the office secretaries. Without the work of these students. V.I.T. wouldn’t run as smoothly as it does. 77 Underclassmen Awards REA YOUTH TO WASHING- OUTSTANDING TEENAGER TON CONTEST WINNER: 1969: Paula Parks Carlyle Weber OUTSTANDING TEENAGER GIRLS’ STATE 1970: 1969: Beth McMullen Wanda Moses GIRLS’ STATE 1970: Chris McMullen GIRLS’ STATE 1970: Lynn Sheilds BOYS STATE: 1970: Dan Chenoweth BOYS STATE 1970: Kerry Neilsen BOYS STATE 1970: Randy Connour BOYS STATE 1970: Mike Martin 78 Jtiitiat'm Homecoming Royalty for 1969 Special Dances Zhe Cittle Dog SENIOR CLASS PLAY Pennant for the Kremlin “Our banquets'' Senior Wills I, Edith Abernathy, will my ability to keep on the good side of Mrs. Brumett to Dixie Danner because 1 know she will need it if she takes Home-Ec next year. 1, Jim Abernathy, will all my trips to Ipava to Joe Bruketta.
