Seniors — 1969 EDITOR: Deb Snedeker ASSISTANT-EDITOR: Linda Bean School Opens Janet Easley opens the door on a new school year. First requirement of all students: filling out registration forms. Freshman Jim Regan has it rough while Senior Ron Dildine takes it easy. Before school officially opened, janitor John Walker was hard at work getting ready, as was Jeff Neilsen for football. 2 Old friends reunite, as do the couples. The cheerleaders do some shaping-up for this year; and Mrs. Pavelka prepares for the new school year, too. The back-to-school dance was a smiling success. 3 4 5 The B. J. Goes to Press Putting out the BIG JOURNAL was the job of twenty-five students in Mrs. Knowles’ Speech and Journalism class. The B. J. was issued once a month; extras were put out before big games. Collecting news, drawing the covers, typing, running off, and stapling the pages kept the class busy. The “In” fashions this year were the Nehru jackets, ruffles, the C.P.O. jackets, and the pantskirt. When the rains came, Jay and Randy were certainly well prepared. 8 Happenings Autumn was ushered in by many activities. The band got underway, the Sophmores sold magazines, G.A. A. initiated new members, awards were earned, and the majority of students settled down to another year at V.l.T. Freshmen Stagger Initiation is special for a Senior. Jay Waters begins the action by auctioning the Freshmen as slaves. Teachers look on as Freshmen look out. as Seniors Swagger 14 Homecoming Festivities began with enthusiasm! The pep assembly, the faculty skit, and “SCHOOL SPIRIT” led our Hornets to a 33-0 victory in spite of a certain broken nose. Mrs. Horwedal and Mr. Holman were faculty King and Queen and even football student council members stayed to decorate for “Autumn’s Kingdom”. 16 Queen Margaret and King Ronnie reigned over “Autumn’s Kingdom” with majestic magnificence. All court attendants, as well as everyone attending, seemed to really enjoy the dance. FOOTBALL SQUAD V.l.T. Hornets FIRST ROW, L. TO R.: N. Snowden, B. Vaughn, R. Heaton, S. Parr, J. Colston, L. Chorus Chorus Class 43 Students Plan Ahead to College and Careers Organization 45 On February 8, 1969 V.l.T.’s Speech Contestants, Coaches, (and Trolls) journeyed to W.I.U. for a regional workshop in preparation for district contest. This year, Northwestern High School was the host of District Contest, so on February 15, our V.I.T. entries gave their speeches according to chosen categories. This was a wonderful experience for all concerned, and may V.I.T. be well represented again next year!! 46 History of the “Class Seniors of ’69” SR. OFFICERS Jeff Nielsen—President Gordon Tingley—Vice President Margaret Wilson—Treasurer Connie Ritter—Secretary Reminiscing into the past six years, several events stand out in our memories. Sitting in front of that someone special in a certain class, one’s first kiss, or that important date can bring back our own personal memories regarding our days of Jr. High and High School. Unforgettable occurrences are the vegetable fights started by the Vermont boys; the renovation of the viaduct by the two “opposing” groups from T.G. and Ipava; stealing bones from the skeleton in Miss Brown’s Biology I class; Randy Sorrells being the idol of the Jr High girls; Mr. Cook’s “helpful” talks in eighth grade; 8-c going through four teachers in English class; H.M. catching a serious case of the flu on Prom night and sleeping it off during College English class; Jay Waters in the wastebasket in Algebra II class; Melba, Rod, and Ellen stacking the chemistry class chairs; that 100 on a final exam paper; the secret about the big Christmas box on the stage during the last day before vacation; Jr. and Sr. Class Play practices for “Hillbilly Weddin” and ‘The Mouse That Roared”; time spent in that room called the principal’s office; being initiated by the Srs. of “65” and then organizing the SENIOR FARM and getting this year’s Freshmen started off right; Mrs. Kern’s after-school party when we were Sophomores; Perseph falling off the curb no more than 3 or 4 times at the French contest held at I.S.U.; the band festivals in Canton with Jack Weese as our official protector; the Speech class making the morning announcements during the first semester; becoming expert drivers as sophomores; co-ed dancing and recreation in P.E.; eating our lunches outside during the fire alarms; Gilbert being a victim of fall-out in P.E. class; the years of being CHAMPS in football and basketball; marching in the rain (much to the discomfort not only of the band students, but also the football team); the band extravaganzas; the giving of the Prom “Three Coins in a Fountain”; the soc-hops, special dances; popular places such as Heller’s Holler, Union Chapel, and Ipava’s Lover’s Lane; our Senior Class Trip; community projects such as putting a shifter in that “52” Chevy; assemblies to educate and entertain; and plans made for our future lives. As we Seniors leave the doors of V.I.T., we await our futures!!!! 48 Cathy Clanin Jim Bucy Neil Burgctt Stanton Cook Joe Baumgartner Dale Cleer Sue Blansfield Don Banfield Dave Bubb David Gale Lois Demott Becky Cripe Ron Dildine Rod Frederick Hurley Crossman Becky Dutton Bob Fawcett Brian Gann Mike Hollenback Patrica Heaton Philip Heaton Jeannette Huett Ellen Keith 52 Eldon Morrison Harold Moses Jerry Myers MISSING MISSING Margaret Wilson Norman Wise Dian Wickwire Dennis Wright Leon Wright COLORS: Green and Gold CLASS MOTTO: The world is a beautiful Book, but of little use to him who cannot read it. The Junior Class of V.I.T. raced off to a good start in this school year. The officers chosen to lead our class were President, Job Marshall; Vice-President, Cathy Arnett; Secretary, Kim Azbell; and Treasurer, Pat Demott. This year the Juniors received their class rings, sold basketball concessions, sponsored the prom, and generally, SOCKED-IT-TO-‘EM!H! The Junior class sponsors this year are Mrs. Knowles; Mrs. Horwedel; Mrs. Herriford; Mrs. Dailey; Mrs. Kost; Mrs. Adair; Mr. Schmidt; Mr. Connour; Miss Brown. ■K ja Junior Class D. Danner M. First of all, we broke all previous magazine sales’ records and began looking for new ways to make additional money. With driving, we entered an entire new world and acquired our licenses after classroom study, and no doubt, many harrowing and hilarious driving experiences. As “Sophs” we also encountered and tackled Julius Caesar, postulates and theorems, a new course—first-aid, welding, and setting in sleeves in home-ec. We also ordered our class rings and began thinking about becoming upper classmen. Our class was led by President Randy Connour, Vice-President Mark Dohner, Secretary Becky Snowden, Treasurer Chris McMullen, and Reporter Paula Parks. Our class sponsors were Mrs. Hughes and Mr. Hunter. All in all, it was quite a year!! D. Danner T. Dennis J. Derry M. Dohner 63 J. Engel D. Freels G. Glover ___ — - a M. Hickle J. Hollenback S. Fifty-one freshmen began a whirlwind of fun, excitement, and learning when they moved over to the high school wing of V.I.T. Initiation was one of the first obstacles to overcome, but the green frosh managed to survive the fun and games provided by the Seniors. Settling down to high school, the freshmen sold candy, competed for the “spirit stick” at pep assemblies, and entered a new world of algebra, gerunds, infinitives, the aroma of formaldehyde, and T.B. tests. Leading the freshmen class were: President-Janet Easley; Vice-President-Ray Gooddell; Secretary-Sandy Copes; Reporter-Sandy Morrison. The Freshmen sponsors were Mrs. Cary and Mrs. Pavelka. D. At Christmas time, the halls were festively decorated by the Student Council. ‘The Seven Little Foys” and a gift exchange were part of the Christmas party. The Student Council was kept busy with arranging workers for the concession stands for the ball games. With Spring came plans for a science fair and hobby show. Several students participated in the literary contest and Fulton County Spelling Bee. In the Fall, the baseball team Finished with a record of 2 wins and 7 losses. With Winter came the basketball season and a record of 3 and 11 for the Heavy Weights. The Light Weights finished with 7 wins and 9 losses. Along with spring fever came the track season and the boys began training for the meets. With the close of the 1968-69 season, the eighth graders are eager for graduation and high school life. Those now shown in this picture but who deserve ample credit along with the rest of the members are Jack Weese, Lyndall Martin, and Glen Wilcoxen. Our sponsor, Mrs. Knowles, certainly did her share by making clever suggestions and helping to organize and to check the numerous requirements that go into an Annual page. There also have been many other people aiding in the publication of this year’s VITorian such as the Seniors who donated their time to sell ads as a means of obtaining the necessary $ for expenses, and Mr. Cary’s frequent help in aiding our cause. In addition may I thank the students and faculty for being so cooperative in letting their pictures be taken. With the staff I’ve had to work with this year my job has been much more pleasant, and I hope that everyone will enjoy this year’s VITorian of 1969! j)d ’-'U Editor 83 Mr. Kennedy D. McCormick C. When the first rains of Spring came, Teresa was well prepared. It seems that that old Spring Fever hit Jim ’cause he daydreamed his way through classes; Stanton and Diane were apparently bitten by the “love-bug” too! Jr. Class Play “It Happens Every Summer” Jr. —Sr. Prom “Cinderella Ball” “Queen Dianne’ and “King Randy” This Is America After seven years, “This is America” brought V.I.T. staged productions to an end. The first show seven years ago drew an audience of 400 persons. ‘This is America” was viewed by 1,700. Before restricting the crowd by reserved seats, audiences were hitting the 2,000 mark. But don’t underestimate what the Band plans for next year! Plans are already underway for a new type and style of presentation—the crowds are in for a thrill—this is a “Mr. White Promise”—so LOOK OUT! Seniors Go to Chicago! On the weekend of May 10th, the Senior class ventured to Chicago for the annual trip. Highlights of the trip were dinner and a theater-in-the-round performance of “Funny Girl’’. That night at the Conrad Hilton the Mighty Seniors engaged the hotel’s facilities, telephones, and the elevators, and they also made good use of the halls. On Sunday they toured museums (where some got lost) and at last bade goodbye to the “Windy City”. Banquets Baseball Front row, L to R: R. Ladd, C. Mytich, D. Cleer, D. Bubb, H. Moses, D. Roddis, R.
