CLASS HISTORY The class of 56” entered the VIT High School in the fall of 52.” The class consisted of 46 members and they chose the following officers: Gordon Reedy, President; Katherine Porter, Vice President; Mary Ruth Malott, Secretary-Treasurer. Student Council members from our class were Jerry Schisler and Marvin White. Mr. Baily and Mrs. Rademacher were our class advisors. For our Homecoming float we chose the theme Burn ’em Up.” Homecoming Attendants were Ronald E. Mercer and Janet Adcock. Our Freshman class was well represented in Band and athletics. Katherine Porter was elected cheerleader. We had a hay ride and wiener roast at Loren Kennedy’s, and for money projects we sold Christmas cards and had a Bake Sale. We came back to school in the fall of 53” with 44 members and elected new officers and new advisors. Class officers were Melvina Burcky, President; Lowell Worsdell, Vice President; Gordon Reedy, Secretary-Treasurer. Our class advisors were Mr. Churchill and Mr. Baily. Our Homecoming float, with the theme of Dragnet, won first prize in the parade. Mary Ruth Malott and Marvin White were our Homecoming Attendants. Peggy Wherley and Katherine Porter were elected cheerleaders. We started our Junior year in the fall of 54” with our class consisting of 40 members. The class chose the following officers for the year; Lynn Carrison, President; Katherine Porter, Vice President; Gordon Reedy, Secretary; and Lowell Worsdell, Treasurer. Marvin White and Mary Ruth Malott were elected as Student Council representatives. Class advisors were Mrs. Peak, Mrs. Hughes, and Mr. Sutton. The Homecoming float carried out the theme Make Room for Bushnell.” King and Queen attendants were Ralph Lafary and Mary Ruth Malott. We had our share of letter winners this year with Katherine Porter elected as cheerleader and Shirley Hunter as majorette. The Junior class play was Girl Crazy” which was presented on March 30 and 31. The cast consisted of eighteen Juniors. Mrs. Baily was our director. On May 13 we gave the Junior-Senior Prom and Banquet. The theme was Mardi Gras. Billy Hill and his orchestra provided the music for the evening. Money making projects were: two paper drives, selling sweat shirts and jackets, dances, play, picking up corn, and the concession stands at home basketball games. In September 1955, forty members enrolled in VIT in hopes of receiving a single diploma in May of 1956. The class chose the following officers: Lynn Carrison, President; Ralph LaFary, Vice President; Gordon Reedy, Secretary-Treasurer. Mary Ruth Malott and Marvin White were elected as Student Council representatives. Mrs. Clendenny, Mrs. Peak and Mrs. Hughes were the class advisors. On September 9 the Seniors had charge of the informal initiation for the Freshmen during the day and also the formal candle light initiation services that evening. Next came the Homecoming. We chose our float to be, Shower of Stars” and Marilee Atwater and Lynn Carrison wefe elected as King and Queen. Our class play entitled Phantom of the High School” was presented March 27. The cast consisted of 18 members of the class. Gerald Stevens was our director. Money making projects were: Magazine sales, paper drive, class play, concessions at home football games. On October 18 the Seniors held a wiener roast. On April 5 the Seniors held an all school skating party. May 4 we were guests at the Junior-Senior Prom and Banquet. May 30 we went on our Senior trip to the Ozarks in Missouri. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Clannin were our chaperons. Janet Adcock and Norman Plate joined the class in the second semester. Music contestants were Ed Butcher, Rosalie Ellison, Phyllis Howell, Mel Burcky, Katherine Porter, and Janice Brock. Speech contestants were Gordon Reedy and Rosalie Ellison. Katherine Porter was chosen as cheerleader for the fourth year, and Shirley Hunter was majorette. We have six members who have gone to school together for 12 years. They are Bonald E. Mercer, Janice Brock, Marilee Atwater, and Joann Herriford who come from Ipava. From Table Grove Gordon Reedy and Margaret Negley have gone to school together for 12 years. The Baccalaureate service was set for May 27 and May 29 was Graduation.”
