The USS UVALDE is a big ship, 459 feet long and 63 feet across. She displaces 10,000 odd tons and has 285,000 cubic feet of cargo space. To keep it running smoothly and surely, to make this great metal griffin come alive, requires the special abilities and skills of many men. These are the faces of some of those meh ..... CAPTAIN F. A. BUTLER COMMANDING OFFICER 4 DECEMBER ,I964 TO 25 NOVEMBER, 1965 Captain F.A. Butler, born in Memphis, Tennessee, 13 July, 1920, graduated from junior college at Marion Institute, Marion, Alabama in 1939, and then entered the U.S. Naval Academy where he was graduated and commissioned Ensign in June 1942. During World War II he served on the destroyer TRATHEN lDD53Ol as gunnery officer. The TRATHEN operated with the Fast Carrier Task Forces in the Asiatic-Pacific theatre, conducting advance Force Operations and providing naval gunfire in support of amphibious operations. After World War II he served three years in the Western Pacific as Executive Officer ofthe destroyer BRUSH tDD745l and Commanding Officer of the fleet tug LIPAN lATF85l, followed by a tour of shore duty at the NROTC Unit, University of Washington in Seattle. He joined the Amphibious Force, Atlantic Fleet in 1951, first as Commanding Officer, USS KLEINSMITH lAPD134l and then as operations officer of the Staff of COMPHIBGRU FOUR. After a tour of NATO duty with SACLANT, he commanded the destroyer PUTNAM lDD757l, oper- ating with the U.S. Second and Sixth Fleets. In 1962 he returned to the Amphibious Force as Force Operations Officer, Staff, COMPHIBLANT, where he attained the rank of Captain. In 1963 he joined COMPHIBTRALANT as Assistant Chief of Staff for Operations, Plans and Training. On December 4, 1964, Captain Butler assumed command of the USS UVALDE. Captain Butler wears the American Defense Medal, American Theatre Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Theatre Medal with eight stars, World War II Victory Medal, China Service Medal tExtendedlp Occupation Medal with European and Asiatic Clasps, Philippine Liberation Ribbon, and the National Defense Service Medal. I He is married to the former Miss Mary Hellen Broughton of Harrison, Arkansas, and they reside in Norfolk with their nine children. After leaving the UVALDE, Captain Butler reported for duty on COMPHIBGRU FOUR Staff.
