Then on 26 llllarch the UVALDE received orders to turn back and rendezvous at sea with the Danish ship CHILEAN REEFER, to answer a distress call for amedical doctor. At sunrise Sunday, 27 March, the rendezvous was accomplished and a Mike boat carried Doctor Davis to the Cl-IILEAN REEFER. Doctor Davis found Able-bodied Seaman Jensen in serious condition with a bleeding ulcer and decided to transfer him to the UVALDE. -' W.. ,,, Seaman Jensen responded well to treatment and by the time the UVALDE arrived in Norfolk, he was talking of drinking American beer. Despite the resulting' delay in returning home, all hands felt a sense of satisfaction from this mercy mission that possibly saved a man's life.
