CAPTAIN F. A. BUTLER COMMANDING OFFICER 4 DECEMBER ,I964 TO 25 NOVEMBER, 1965 Captain F.A. Butler, born in Memphis, Tennessee, 13 July, 1920, graduated from junior college at Marion Institute, Marion, Alabama in 1939, and then entered the U.S. Naval Academy where he was graduated and commissioned Ensign in June 1942. During World War II he served on the destroyer TRATHEN lDD53Ol as gunnery officer. The TRATHEN operated with the Fast Carrier Task Forces in the Asiatic-Pacific theatre, conducting advance Force Operations and providing naval gunfire in support of amphibious operations. After World War II he served three years in the Western Pacific as Executive Officer ofthe destroyer BRUSH tDD745l and Commanding Officer of the fleet tug LIPAN lATF85l, followed by a tour of shore duty at the NROTC Unit, University of Washington in Seattle. He joined the Amphibious Force, Atlantic Fleet in 1951, first as Commanding Officer, USS KLEINSMITH lAPD134l and then as operations officer of the Staff of COMPHIBGRU FOUR. After a tour of NATO duty with SACLANT, he commanded the destroyer PUTNAM lDD757l, oper- ating with the U.S. Second and Sixth Fleets. In 1962 he returned to the Amphibious Force as Force Operations Officer, Staff, COMPHIBLANT, where he attained the rank of Captain. In 1963 he joined COMPHIBTRALANT as Assistant Chief of Staff for Operations, Plans and Training. On December 4, 1964, Captain Butler assumed command of the USS UVALDE. Captain Butler wears the American Defense Medal, American Theatre Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Theatre Medal with eight stars, World War II Victory Medal, China Service Medal tExtendedlp Occupation Medal with European and Asiatic Clasps, Philippine Liberation Ribbon, and the National Defense Service Medal. I He is married to the former Miss Mary Hellen Broughton of Harrison, Arkansas, and they reside in Norfolk with their nine children. After leaving the UVALDE, Captain Butler reported for duty on COMPHIBGRU FOUR Staff.

commanomq offlcen CAPTAIN JOHN OSCAR SHERMAN, JR. Captain John Oscar Sherman, Jr., was born in Forest, Mississippi on May 2, 1920. He is mar- ried to the former Ruth Stone Binnicker. They reside at 6106 Ocean Front, Virginia Beach with their son John Clay, age 13. Their married daugh- ter,Mrs. F.H. Emmett, lives in Richmond,Virginia Captain Sherman graduated from Forest High School in 1938 and attended Mississippi State College for two years before entering the U.S. Naval Academy. Upon graduation and commis- sioning in June 1943 he was assigned to the LAND he participated in the Northern Solomons campaign including Bougainville and the Battle of Empress Augusta Bay, the Marianas campaign and the First Battle of the Philippine Sea, the Palau Operations, and the Philippine Liberation campaign. In June 1945 Captain Sherman departed Subic Bay for Dallas, Texas for flight training. Receiving his wings in September 1946 at Pensacola, he took fighter training at NAS, Banana River and received orders to VF-1A, the l'Red Rippers, at North Island. Succeeding aviation tours were: Fleet Aircraft Service Squadron One Hundred Twelve, Air Operations Officer on the Staff of Commander Carrier Division One aboard USS PHILIPPINE SEA, NAAS, Saufley Field as instructor in basic training, and Air Transport Squadron Five at Moffett Field. In 1956 Captain Sherman reported to the Bureau of Naval Personnel for duty in the Aviation Liason Branch. After ten months he was selected to be personal aide to the Chief of Naval Per- sonnel, Vice Admiral James L. Holloway,Jr. When Admiral Holloway was appointed as Commander- in-Chief, U.S. Naval Forces Eastern Atlantic and Mediterranean, Captain Sherman accompanied him to London. During this tour he participated in the Lebanon Operation. In July 1959, Captain Sherman reported to VS-31 at NAS, Quonset Point as Operations Officer until June 1, 1960, when the squadron split to form VS-28 and became part of CVSG-52. At that time he assumed duties as Executive Officer. On August 5, 1960 he relieved Commander Joseph Cady as Commanding Officer, VS-31. In August 1961 Captain Sherman reported to the Naval War College, Newport, Rhode Island, after which he became Operations Officer of the USS ESSEX. During this tour he participated in the 1962 Cuban Crisis. In October 1962 he reported to the Organization of the Joint Chiefs of Staff where he served prior to reporting as Commanding Officer, USS UVALDE. Captain Sherman's awards consist of: Bronze Star, awarded for duty with COMCARDIV ONE in Korea, two Navy Unit Citations, one for duty with Task Force 77 in Korea and the other for action in Cruiser Division Twelve during the Bougainville landings, and the Joint Service Commendation Medal for duty with the Joint Staff in Washington. light cruiser CLEVELAND.
