2 . l l l M '-1-pn--s-un A MAN OF MANY TALENTS Sunday, November 23, 1980, saw numerous well-wishers, friends, and acquaintances gather at the Campus Union Red Room at Utica Junior College, beginning at 3:00 P.M., to pay homage to Rev. Bendy Ejuneious Lewis, a long-time friend to Utica Junior College and its surrounding communitiesf Rev. Lewis was honored as a husband, a minister, a father, an educator and a humanitarian. Rev. Lewis was the recipient of awards from Utica Junior College, the Town of Utica, Utica areas ministers, Utica Junior College Student Government Organization, Utica Junior College Sociology Club, Utica Junior College Campus Ministry and Institute Baptist Church. Rev. Lewis was also given tribute for his involvement in religious, educational, social and community activities. Rev. Lewis was born, reared and received his elementary education in Jasper County, Texas. He received his high school education from Houston College at Houston, Texas and his college training at Kountze College, Kountze, Texas. In 1917, he moved to Vicksburg and made Mississippi his home. From 1930-35, Rev. Lewis served as principal of Vicksburg Baptist Academy. Following, he accepted employment in the public school stystem of Warren County. In 1942, he served as pastor of St. Peter Baptist Church at Utica and civilian pastor of the CCC Camp near Utica. The CCC Camp was established for the training of men in the military service. Afterwhich, Rev. Lewis began working at Utica Normal and Industrial Institute, presently Utica Junior College, where he served for ten years. Rev. Lewis joined the staff at Oakley Training School where he served in the capacity of teacher, plumber, laundry supervisor and chaplain. His retirement came in 1959 at Oakley Training School. Although retired, Rev. Lewis remains active as pastor of the Institute Baptist Church. He holds membership in the following organizations: The Multi-Purpose Club of the community, Retired Teachers Association, Senior Citizens Club, Baptist Aide, Heroin Court and Masonic Lodge. Rev. Lewis is married to the former Ms. Irene Armstrong, they have one son, Walter Bendy Lewis, who is an attorney in Washington, D.C. and a professor at Howard University. Believing that the educational process must never cease, Rev. and Mrs. Lewis are presently attending night classes at Utica Junior College. fAbove pictured is a long time friend of Rev.
