DAVID MCCORD r -' r-iam.-f A NEW MAIOR IN MUSIC The Humanities Division continued to expand its curricular offferings with the introduction of a Music Education major in the Department of Music this fall. Dr. Cooper reported he was pleased with an initial enrollment of seven students in the new program. The new curriculum has been designed to prepare majors with the first two years toward a degree in Music Education. Although initial concentration is being placed upon the voice as a performing instrument, practice rooms have been built also for piano. Once the new pianos arrive on campus, a major concentration will be available in piano for students. Lorene Allen, jacqueline Gary, Amelia Brown, and Tracy jefferson try using rhythm instruments. Jil! w ' w QU- fra OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT January 27, l978 Faculty, Staff, Students and Friends... ...There are historic moments in the development of every entity that deserve special attention, so it is with the publication of this yearbook. We take special notice of Utica Junior College arriving at its Hdiamond jubilee.H This enunciation proclaims seventy-five years of educational service to the citizens of this district and this State. This HDiamond Jubileen distinction brings about a sense of pride, honor and humility in all of those Cfaculty, staff and studentsl who accepted the resolve to better the plight of mankind. It tells us that we devoutly merit the confidence that has been reposed in us by our fellow humans. Our fervent prayer is that educational institutions which address these needs will continue to exist seventy-five years from now. We congratulate all who gave lavishly of themselves toward the completion of this publication. Educationally yours ' O . Louis Stoke eside JLS!em ,,..-an ' lm-'u- 1---' W- ,.--ii... ,, .... Since its inception, Opera South has presented two operas every year. The fall production of jubilee by composer Ulysses Kay was based upon the novel of the same name written by Margaret Walker. Donald Dorr created the libretto and Ian Strasfogel directed. Opera South signed Paul Freeman of the Detroit Symphony as conductor. 3 S . ,,.. I I I nk -In ... ss K X . at what I l. 5 vfsiigfa . ... The audience immediately became a part of the presentation and the empathy created was unbelievable! 120 THE LIFE UF A KING Uticanites had a most unusual and fortunate opportunity to witness the dramatic presentation of The Life of a King during Black History Week. The four act drama, written by Rev. Arthur Langford, Ir. in 1969, vividly portrayed aspects of the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King. The drama opened with scenes from the famous bus confrontation that lead to the Montgomery boycott and moved through important civil rights events in Dr. King's life until his untimely shooting death in Memphis. The Life of a King has been praised by critics for its realism and charismatic presentation. The U.I.C. event was certainly no exception and was judged outstanding! However, it seems that about the only time most students are aware of its existence is when the book is being distributed or when they voice their complaints. Some people look through a yearbook once or twice to find their picture tif they bothered to have it madel, while others never bother to pick them up or to make arrangements to have the book mailed to them. But the appreciated yearbooks are those which are taken out often and the pages turned slowly as pictures recall those days we thought would never end. And it is that frequent trip down memory lane that makes the whole process of creating a yearbook worthwhile. It was the purpose of this editor and staff to capture those moments of the year 1977-78 and put them together in a yearbook that would please you. the students. Our thanks is extended to our advisor, Mr. McCarty, for his suggestions on design and layoutg Mr. Porter, for his untiring efforts in photography: Mr. Bell, for his help in identifying students: and Mrs. Donaldson, for her valuable critiques and advice in writing. As you turn the pages, I hope you can feel the spirit that reigned at UIC this year and maybe even discover a candid shot of yourself somewhere along the way. ' Luella Smith Editor 128 :ffl , . W L?
