SEP' -ww ji A Look at Uur Past Utica Junior College, located four miles southeast of the town of U tica, Mississippi amid towering pines and shruhhery, had its beginning in 1903 when the Utica Normal and Industrial Institute was no more than a one-huilding wood structure. The healthy climate and beautiful scenery make it an ideal location for training young minds. For forty years this institution was supported by the generosity of friends and the genius of its founder. In 1946 the school became the property of Hinds County. In its continued pursuit for excellence the school again saw rapid growth in 1954 when the junior college was added to the site. A Need Conceiifed by Our Founder Returning to Utica, Mississippi after a period of study at Tuskegee Instituteg the founders of Utica Normal and Industrial Institute, Mr. and Mrs. William H. Holtzclaw, jr., son of the the work lie had started. His administration was from 1943 through 1946. Mr. J. D. Boyd hecame superintendent of Utica Institute in 1951 and served with his wife, Mrs. C. B. Boyd, as superintendent until 1954 when he organized the junior college and became its frst president. It was under President Boyd's leadership that the enrollment of the high school department was increased from three hundred to almost nine hundred studentsg the physcial plant was improved to the tune of approximately a million dollarsg and the high school was accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. Mr. Boyd is now president of Alcorn Agricultural and Mechanical College. '15 E NLF' In 1946, Mr. james W. Grantham hecame head of the school. He and his wife served until 1951. With ejjziciency and dedication he improved the curriculum, transportation, facilities, and stay? of the school. He is now serving as Professor of Education at Grambling College. Like other outstanding forerunners of Utica junior College, Mr. Crantham will leave his footprints in the sands of timej' through his ejforts to educate the masses. I t ojfers three hasic programs: two years of general education which enables a student to transfer to a senior college to work toward a hachelor's degreeg Vocational-Technical Program, upon the completion of which a student may go directly into employmentg and Community Service in form of the Home Economics Department and Agricultural Department working with the farm families to improve rural living. Courses offered in the Vocational Technical Program are: auto mechanicsg harhering, cosmetologyg drafting and design technologyg electrical technologyg building and construction technologyg hriclzmasonryg and secretarial science. The physical plant has constantly increased and is now valued at approximately one and a half million dollars. The philosophy behind the growth of the curriculum and plant stems from the original idea of the founder which was to improve the quality of life of the people served hy the school. M ,fi f f .1 sv., x. I-q Enhanced by Dedicated Leaalershgo . . . In 1957 following the successful administration of President Boyd, Mr. Walter Washington was elected president of the school. President Washington came to Uitca junior College in 1951 as principal under President Boyd. He served as the jqrst dean of the college. Since Mr. Washington became president, the college has continued its growth in buildings, curriculum, and staff. The fnancial support of the college has been greatly increased. Its transportation system has now expanded to three counties. Two additional counties, Copiah and Warren, have become a part of the college, making Utica junior College the frst district junior college of its kind in the State. President Washington brings to his position extensive training and experience that have made his administration a success. He has served in many educational leadership positions beyond the college, among which was president of the Mississippi Teachers Association. President and Mrs. Washington have worked as a team during his tenure here. A young leader, President Washington has a love for knowledge. Many persons employed at Utica junior College have been inspired to search for greater knowledge because of his influence on them.
