President's Message The annual staff and its advisors are to be congratulated on the 1960-61 UTICANITE, the school's annual. Included on these pages is the total picture of Utica Junior College as it grows toward full development. These pages reflect an involvement of tax money, teachers, students, and community people work- ing together to create the climate where good learning can take place. It is a success story of rapid growth and development both in student body and physical expansion. The latest addition to the College is the expansion of the district from Hinds County to include Copiah County. This marks the first junior college in Missis- sippi of its kind to have a junior college district of more than one county. The inclusion of Copiah County as a supporting county to the school opened a whole new opportunity for high school graduates of that county to get a two- year education at a low cost. It is the hope that the example of Copiah County will be the stimulus to bring other adjacent counties to the junior college district. This Annual also reflects the wide variety of student activities and rich curriculums that are provided here. Students from this College have trans- ferred to senior college and, in many instances, have become honor students, which reflects the quality of the instructional program. It is our sincere hope that those persons who read this Annual will be better acquainted with the school program that is being developed here. Yours truly, WALTER WASHINGTON President 21

rv' GEORGE A. JOHNSON A.B., M.s. Dean MISS J ESSIE M. JAMES B.s. Secretary to Dean - www The Staff Students of Utica Junior College: Each year at this time it becomes our happy privilege to say well done to a hard-working student body, farewell to a group of hard-studying sophomores, and congratulations to a great annual staff. The deeds that have been done this year, the accomplishments of our teams, our choir, our band, and our students are all indicative of the interest and cooperation of the faculty, staff and students working together for a better and greater Utica Junior College. May you continue to work to reflect credit upon yourselves, the school, and the community. Let the words of Young always be in your minds: How vain is learning, How empty is art, But it mends the life and guards the heart. Yours very truly, GEORGE A. JOHNSON 22
