With A Very After three unsuccessful attempts to establish a school, Dr. William H. Holtzclaw made a fourth at- tempt which was a success. The Utica Normal and Industrial Institute was established on March 19, 1903. For forty years the school was guided by the genius of its founder and was supported entirely by gifts from friends. In 1946, the school was donated to Hinds County and became Hinds County Colored Agricul- fure High School. The school grew from one of six- teen faculty members and three hundred students, to one with forty faculty members and eight hun- dred students. GONE BUT NEVER FORGOTTEN are the fitting words found at the head of our founder's grave. Colorful History. . . CAMPUS LANDMARK, the ball tower. Th great symbol of the years gone by. In its regular monthly meeting in July, 1954, The Board of Trustees of The Utica Institute au- thorized plans to proceed with the organization of a Junior College program. In a special session of the Legislature in December, 1954, the State Legis- Iature gave its approval and the Utica Institute Junior College was founded. In July of 1958, the Board of Trustees again gave approval to the changing of the name of the school and it was officially changed to Utica Junior College.
