At Arms 'ef to 1 -ep your mouth clean and don't use bad words. Board Elects President Boyd To New Position The Board of Trustees of Institutions of Higher Learning of Mississippi has elected Mr, J. D. Boyd, President of The Utica Institute, as President of Alcorn A. 8z M. College. President Boyd will bring to the office wide knowledge of the needs of the peo- ple of Mississippi. He was born at Delo- roso, Wilkinson County, Mississippi. His education 'was obtained in the grammar schools of his state. He graduated from Alcorn A. Sz M. College in 1932. His graduate work and degree were earned at the University of Illinois. His life has been devoted to teaching. He began work in a one-teacher school. He served for sixteen years as a princi- pal and teacher of vocational agriculture in the high schools of Mississippi. In 1947, he was called back to Alcorn as in- structor in agronomy and manager of the college farm. In 1951, he was asked to be- come head of The Utica Institute. In his short stay at that institution. he has in- creased the enrollment from 300 to near- ly 600, the employees from 16 to 47, and the physical plant to about S700,000. He has paved the streets. built a football field, and installed modern lights on the campus. Within five years after he be- came head of The Utica Institute, it was fully accredited by the Southern Asso- riation of Colleges a nd Secondary Schools. He has not been too busy to give time to worthwhile projects. He has been ,president of the County, District, and State Teachers' Association. He has been active in attending national educational meetings, and was one of the eighteen delegates from his state to attend the White House Conference on Education. He helped to organize and become vice- president of the State Mutual Savings and Loan Association. President Boyd is a member of the Baptist Church, the Elks, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Phi Delta Kappa Honorary fraternity, American Society of Agron- omy, and many other civic and profes- sional organizations. Negro History Is Ubserved At Utica Institute Negro History Week was observed by Tiapel programs, classroom discussions, nhl- bulletin board displays. Dr. John Eubank, professor of social 1-ience at Jackson State College, de- ivered a very informative and inspiring message concerning the Negro in this present society. The dramatic club pre- sented a pageant that symbolized the Negro's heritage. The tenth grade English classes listen- ed to various speakers during the week who spoke on the Negro's contribution in their fields of concentration. The speakers were: Messrs. Robert Anthony, Dennis Sweet, Arthur Kinnard, Walter Tilles, James Bolden, Henry Purnell, and Moses Howard.
