Dr. William H. Holtzclaw, C1874-19437 founder of the Utica Institute in 1902. Born in Roanoke. Ala- bama. Dr. Holtzclaw attended the Tuskegee Institute. He graduated from the same in 1898. After working as a teacher in Alabama for a number of years Dr. Holtzclaw migrated to Mississippi. Inspired by the works of the late Dr. Booker T. Washington. of whom he was a student, Dr. Holtzclaw endeavored to estab- lish an institution which would have as its aim the elevation of the Negro vocationally and academically. A scholar, a humanitarian, a citizen- - - Such was his life. 72

Utica Institute, a school of culture, an example of rapid progress and achievement. and a place of brotherly love is an institution that started with this major purpose- to train youth who will uplift the economic. educational and moral standards of America. At this time, the staff of the l955-1956 Uticanite has presented this Annual to give you a vicarious school day at Utica, and to allow you to compare the first head- line- Utica Institute Enrolls Fifteen Students with the present headline- Utica Institute Enrolls Six Hundred and Twenty Five Students. The first leading articles included statements concern- ing one teacher with one or two books in a one room shack. The last leading article included information about forty teachers and a plant valued at more than S750.000.00. The newspaper of time has revealed a great change at this institution. The sun is rising higher and its beam is glowing brighter, so stop with me---for a few moments---please - - - and view the sons and daughters of Dear Ole Utica - - -. s M 4 ,A
