LETTERS FROM OUR SERVICE MEN To every corner of the earth, students from Utica Wfashington High School have gone to defend our country. From them come letters back home to parents and friends, telling some of the things they have seen and done. The following are fragments of letters which have been received from distant places. Swimming when we can get a chance and are near the water fishing when xx e can there are lots of fish but we dont catch many the natives do though But we dont take fishing very seriously xxe haxe a bigger job to do xve re going to do it and do it right and then we will come home and catch the pumpkin seed down at the old creek Arlbuf Ferris In Hawaii - -I sure miss the United States and wish I xvas back, but 2440 miles from the States is too far to sxvim, but still it does not stop me from enjoying life. Uvalter H oar .fOI1l6ZL'!JEI'6 in the Pacifc - -Sure was glad to hear the Redskins beat Granville this year' it must have been a great game' Nmbeil Helmet 107716116616 172 Noflla A naw In England I had a very good time and I was treated very nice by the English people while I was there I saw quite a few historic sights too After being in England I was sent here to North Africa Louann Spzllman Charles Martin a graduate of 38 from Utica High School was the first casualty among our service men A Memorial Service was held by the students in his honor BOND DAY The week of November 2 was the beginning of Utica s Bond Drixe It ended November 'V with a gala celebration when the highest ex pectations were surpassed The schools in Martinsburg Homer and Utica participated A queen was elected from each room the preceding xxeek The room which sold the most bonds and stamps during the week was allow ed to represent the school Each room made a float for its queen to ride on Ella Mae Miller was the Senior candidate and also the one for the High School Ann Freeman represented the grade school The total sales for the school topped 5525 00000 Adding these to the town sales the thermometer in the town square rang the bell at S119 500 New Courses Offered Thousands of men going into the armed forces are used in work requiring specialized training Since our army of today is a mechanized one men with a knowledge of electricity and shop training are badly needed to help reduce tle period of training after they reach Camp Iunclimcntxls of Electricity ind Shop Training were ofTered to high school students to equip them with some knowledge of different sub yects and yobs they will come in contact with This not only helps keep the army running at a higher speed but increases the soldier s chance for adxance ment fum!!
