What better symbol could represent the Utica Free Academy, long outstanding in tradition, reputa- tion and size! What better theme could characterize the 1958 Academician as it records, in word and picture, the story of another year of progress and achievement! For Academy students, the symbol of the Titan has been most closely associated with Prometheus. He was the Titan who, according, to legend, brought fire from heaven, the gift by which man forged his destiny of dominance over all other creatures. That Promethean spark can be likened to the strength and enrichment our lives have gained here at UFA. Days spent in the Academy classrooms, library and gym have brought us knowledge, inspiration, friendships and, we may hope, the beginning of wisdom. Thus, it is in this true Titan spirit that the senior class presents the 1958 Academi- cian . . . EDITORS Co-editor Linda Endean Co-editor , , , , . Louis Abelove Literary editor . , . In mythology the Titans were the giant sons and daughters of Uranus CHeavenJ and Terra fEarthj who became the rulers of the gods and the masters of men. In modern times it still means gigantic, im- mense and powerful. So class of '58, be Titans- Act big, think big, be big, be the rulers of your destiny and the masters of your fate. A. Ray Calhoon, Principal ADMIN ISTRATIO Prznczpals and Cozmselovs greet Seniors they have guided . fha How many times have you, as a promis- ing young adult, been told to act your age or to grow up! ? These rebukes are admittedly inade- quate. They do not recognize the fact that merely being oldern or growing up phys- ically may yet leave a great deal to be desired. Your high school diploma stands for something worth-while. Among other things it should mean that the person earn- ing the diploma has learned to accept the responsibility which always goes along with privilege. It means that the graduate has set a pattern for himself which will automatically cause him to choose to do the right thing out of habit and only in- frequently fall from grace by doing the easier, less desirable thing. We are creat- ures of habit. Whether we like it or not your life-long habits are, for the most part, already established. If you havenit been able as a developing personality to win in this battle of choice more often than you have lost it - then your reputation is based on your failures rather than on your successes. It has been truly a wonderful exper- ience working with you, watching you grow. May your growth continue in whole- some, signihcant, and truly rewarding accomplishment. Roger N. Umiercltzssmen Contribute to Titan Spirit Members of the Class of '60, more than 600 strong, engaged in an efficient and spirited campaign for the election of class officers. Under their capable leadership, the sophomores have boosted school spirit by participating in sports, clubs and music activities. Scholastically minded, these underclassmen can boast a high percentage on the quarterly honor roll. Fond memories for sophomores to recall were sponsor- ing the traditional Sophomore Hop and class meetings in the gym. Eager for more responsibilities, they anxiously await the leadership which will be theirs in the fall. Last fall, UFA welcomed 465 freshman and dis- tributed them generously among fifteen homerooms. The Class of i6l came in assorted sizes, ranging from 6' 2 to 4' 5 and represented wide and varied back grounds. Although most freshmen were prepared in Utica grammar schools, the class includes entrants from California, Mississippi, Alaska, the Ukraine and Germany. With vibrant enthusiasm and many talents, the members of the Class of '61 have already found their place at UFA. Rangng from languages to sports, these groups provide opportunities for organized participation in music, drama, debating, publications, and professional and cultural interests. One of the newest additions to extracurricular life is the Block U Club, an organization of 'students who have represented UPA in the field of athletics. For the strength and vigor to become Titans in tomorrow's world, UFAers find stimulus and training in the clubs and activities of their Alma Mater. Designed to orient incoming freshmen, this 40-page booklet lists courses, explains procedures, and de- scribes the activity and sport programs offered at the Academy. Two pre-game parades and pep rallies, the Titan Holiday, the Council banquet, and the first mid- term dance in UFA history, June in january, were other successful projects of the Council. The Councils effective operation during the past year confirms the report of Louis Leogrande and JoAnn Mazzatti, dele- gates to the Leadership Training Conference at Syl-3- cuse University: The UFA Student Council ranks among the top in New York State. The choir opened the holiday season in early De- cember with a television show for the Homestead Aid Association. Making a film for WKTV, recording a tape for WIBX and singing at the Christmas Assembly and the First National Bank completed the choir's Yule- tide singing. Betty Jones, Nancy Kielbasinski, Paul Mootz, and Larry Simonetti were given the singular honor of being selected by the State Music Board to attend the All-State Choir in Rochester. Several other students distinguished themselves by being chosen to attend the All-State Sec- tional at Little Falls. Refreshments made and served by twenty-two GAA members followed the spirited basketball game. Other highlights of the season were a Christmas coke party held in the UFA gym, a roller skating party and the send- in of Valentine cards to the children in St. johns and St. Josephs Home. Composed of leaders in girls' athletics who have won their one hundred point awards, the GAA strives to develop good sportsmanship and character, to encourage leadership through student management and to promote girls' ath- letics in the school and community. , ,- , 'ee Wal' 7' ., W 5 GAA officers plan the next meeting. Titans Continue to Dominate Gridiron Winning the Central Oneida League Champion- ship, taking the City Title from Proctor, and retain- ,ing the Central lnterscholastic Conference Champion- ship confirmed UFA,s mastery of the gridiron for the 1957 season. From the five victories of this successful season, different UFA supporters would make different selec- tions as to the game of the year. To the coaching staff the Oswego game was most important because it was here the team came into its own. To the members of the squad, the victory over Whitesboro avenged last year's only defeat. To the entire school, the Proctor game was, without a doubt, the most important victory of the season. After losing a heartbreaker to New Hartford 7-0 the Titans caught fire never to be denied again. ln the next game Fulton found their Red and Green eleven on the short end of a 41-O tally. Next, Oswego proved the turning point for the Titans when the Blue and Gold came from behind a 12-O score in the final seconds of the game to overpower Oswego 13-12. Whitesboro fielded a strong team, but the Titans were too powerful and handed them a sweet 21-0 defeat. Rome was a repeat of last year's game, the Black and Orange again being on the short end of a 13-0 verdict. The 1957 season was brought to a successful end by UFA's 15-0 victory over Proctor which remrned the City Championship to the Kemple Streeters. The Titans ended their season with 5-1 record. Two games were cancelled because of influenza. Only 19 points were scored against the UPA team in contrast to the 101 points they rolled up against their op- ponents. The Titans were never scored upon on their home field. Without the hard running of UFA's halfback, Dick Barkett, and the tremendous quarterbacking of Mike Slive, such a record would have been impossible. Dick was UFA's leading groundgainer and went over for four touchdowns. Mike went over for two and passed for three more. This year as in last, it was im- possible to pick one outstanding player so the award went to both boys. Graduating Seniors on the team are: Ray Stefano, Chet Parraitis, john McFadden, Mike Slive, Larry Scott, Dick Barkett, Bob Marks, Jesse Bell, Bob Spatuzzi, Wriyne Nicol, Les Lewis, Dave Pryputnie- wicz, Lavon Loomis, Pete Hartman, Don Fluty, Dick Hefferon, Bill Cowl. The most thrilling victory was winning the second meet with Rome when UFA came from behind in the last relay to win the event and the meet. The boys' effort in wringing victory from defeat depicted the fine spirit which has characteriz- ed the 1958 natators. On March l UFA defeated the Lowville swimmers in the meet which opened the new Lowville Central School pool. Titan Quintet Defeated But Not Beaten For the first time in eight years, since Mr. Collins has taken the reins from Mr. Edkins, UFA has had an off year in basketball. Starting as a green team, the quintet won seven games in sixteen starts. This year Mr. Collins sacrificed personal glory in preparing for next year's team and according to him he will have a powerhouse for '58-'59, Although the team was green, they came through in the last four games to defeat New York Mills, St. Francis, VVS and Proctor. The first real highlight of the season was the Titan triumph over a strong VVS five. VVS went into the game with a 14-1 record and left with a 14-2 record. The climax of the season came in the last game of the schedule, the final game with Proctor. The Titans closed their season by upset- ting Proctor 66-61. The top guns for the quintet were Ed Hill with 185 points, Larry Taylor close behind with 182 points and Morris Allen with 143. Throughout the season the boys have shown con- siderable loyalty and devotion to the school, sports- munship and respect to their opponents. Although the Titans were defeated in nine games, they fought to the final gun and came back to the next game with the Titan spirit and determination to win.
