BOARD OF TRUSTEES Like the senate and house behind President Kennedy, USU's 14-member Board of Trustees supports and works with university president Dr. Daryl Chase. It's made up of 12 persons appointed by the Utah governor and passed by the Utah legislature and two ex-officio members, the Secretary of State and president of the Alumni Assn. A 15th person, the secretary to the board is not considered an official member. The chief concern and task of the Board is the state institution's massive building program, already well underway. Other plans and actions are of a secondary and future nature. At present, building-minded officials say. left to Right: t. Mark Neubcrger, Joseph F. Cowley, Phillip A. Sullen, R. J. Potter, O. C. Hammond, lamonl F. Toronto. Alma Sonne. Fern B. Ercanbrock, Eve S. Ashton, Ralph S. Blockham, Reed W. Farnsworth, David W. Evans, Henry R. Hurren, Newell V. Sanders, Joseph Rosenblatt. 10

PRESIDENT CHASE Making the field station rounds Who really knows Dr. Daryl Chase, the white-haired gent currently pulling USU's strings” as its' 10th president? How many students are well enough acquainted with him to know what kind of man he is, how he lives, what he likes, what he forsees for USU? Outside of his family and circle of friends, we'd guess few of his students could answer those questions. So we ll do it for you. Dr. Chase, according to a former secretary is: very dedicated to USU...has a marvelous sense of humor...hard worker...likes travel ...is elated over USU expansion and growth...kind, considerate, good host, clever...fairly formal at office...students are his main interest. His wife reports Dr. Chase likes... carrot strips...trained his dog to like them too...virtue Grace Under Pressure' from Hemingway fits him. Concerning USU, Dr. Chase's philosophy is eloquent: He feels the campus must continually ask itself these questions: Are we a vital part of this new age? Did we help create it? Are we contributing our share to the creation of a golden age? And further: Everyone commends us for the splendid material growth on campus...but the real strength of USU, the strength that will withstand the ravages of time, cannot be found in steel or concrete...but in the unseen realities of hearts and minds of the faculty and students who live and labor here. I believe we are experiencing a big awakening at USU to world affairs and the important role which universities of the free world must pay if free men are to remain free and leave a legacy of freedom for their children. 11
